School and library is mostly where I take my Macbook (soon to be Pro). I also bring it along on meetings for an organization website I design.

One thing I always wondered: aren't anyone afraid that they/someone else will spill drink/food on their laptops when they take it to a coffee shop?

Sometimes, I take it to school and occasionally when I go places. Although not as much as I used to, its a pain to unplug everything from my MacBook Pro to take it anywhere.

I take mine to starbucks occasionally, although I hate that you have to pay for internet, at least where I live.

Ah man, thanks for ruining what could have been a great day! School starts back up in a week and a half. I'm not so sure I wanted to be reminded of that. I only take it out to head to school. Otherwise it stays safe behind a locked bedroom door at home. I might have to start using it more often for work. I design jewelry for a living and might have to install that "other OS" so I can install and run the program I need, sorry to say.

yes, at university, at the park (which has secure wifi), and at the coffee shop

Yeah, no one has ever come up to me but I've definitely noticed stares...

At the MBP, not me :p

I refuse to live in fear. Anyway my MacBook has survived a few spills.

No but when I was in the coffee shop one time, the air con unit above me decided to start dripping water over my one-week old MBP! Had to move pretty quickly!

<snip> ...I sometimes need to upload photos while I'm away from home, so I'll take my MBP into a pub and have a beer. But I don't want to impress people with a shiny computer (that's what my natural wit and rugged good looks are for :) ), so I retreat to the quietest corner.

Hahaha...yeah, same here.

I do travel often so the notebook comes with me. Whether it's uploading still images or video segments, the MBP gets a workout. As the above quoted person said, this is done where beer abounds. So it's either a pub or a hotel bar.

Why am I not surprised that an a/c would do that to you. :p

Anyhow, I take mine out and about when I need to. I don't fly with it anymore now that I have the kid. I used to use it more when I was still in school and had time to do things like study the day away at the local Panera.

I take my laptop to work with me everyday. When I'm away from home, I consider it my "away from the computer" time. I hardly ever take my computer out of the house for entertainment purposes. When I work, it's either at home or in the office.

My local coffee shop had a PC but it was always in use so I bought them a WiFi router so I could surf there on my MacBook.

You went and bought a coffee shop a WiFi router so you could use your macbook there? They must really like you...or you really like their coffee :p

I take mine out in the art centre if I happen to have it with me and in the library, but I don't normally have it with me anywhere else.

School, Panera, Starbucks, just to name a few. I travel quite a bit too so plenty of airport use. I hate it when airport security gets frisky with it. But once I was told to turn on the MBP just to prove its an actual notebook, and the security person was quite amazed at how fast it booted into OS X

Sure, that's the point! My MBP gets to nearly ten countries a year. I use it in airports, cafes, on trains etc.. I've recently decided to switch to a MB as I spend more time using it out than in and wouldn't mind something more portable. The MBP is a bit too big for me. Cheers, Tom

All the time. I unplug all the wires and go to lunch next door at a nice coffee shop ( like I am right now ). My lappy doesn't have a fixed location at home or work so I'm already good about keeping it safe from food. It's actually harder to keep it away from my 10 month old daughter!

It's interesting to note the change over the past 12-24 months in terms of the breakdown of systems that I see in the coffee shop. Over a year ago seeing a Mac was a rare occasion all of the systems were butt ugly Dell laptops and the occasional compaq, sony, or Apple.

Nowadays 25-50% of the systems I see on the tables are Mac. Mostly newer MacBooks and MBP's with the occasional iBook and 12" PB thrown in for good measure. At this current moment there are 3 Apples and 1 Dell that I can see.

I'm sitting in a line right now for school (my registration got screwed up and the line is like insane - I've been here for two and a half hours). I didn't have it powered up until maybe 30 minutes ago, when I decided to say, "F it, I want to check my mail and do something other than read the book I brought with me. The only downside, this douche in line near me who has been staring at my chest for the last 90 minutes tried to use my BlackBook as a entry point to start his pick-up line and I was forced to make polite conversation (this guy is just really, really gross - and I'm just not in the mood today).

I used to take my old VAIO with me when I could manage the weight. It had a 16" screen and weighed 8.5 lbs before adding the brick of a power adaptor (another two lbs, easy and that's if I didn't bring an extra battery) and I weigh like 100 lb so lugging around 30% of my body weight (once books, a purse, essentials were added) was not always ideal. But this computer? This computer I'm taking with me everywhere. Especially since the messenger bag I bought last year came with a built in laptop compartment (and it's a Tumi case - so it's quality on top of that).

So most of you guys pay for wifi and mcdonalds and starbucks? because in Socal they all charge.
