'Everyone' at Apple Apparently Calls Foldable 'iPhone Ultra'

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has said "everyone" inside Apple refers to the company's upcoming foldable iPhone as the "iPhone Ultra" internally, though he cautioned that doesn't necessarily confirm it as the final name.

The comments came in response to Creative Strategies analyst Max Weinbach, who argued the "Ultra" name doesn't fit because Apple's existing Ultra products represent the most capable version of a lineup, and the foldable wouldn't clearly outclass the iPhone Pro the way that positioning implies.

Do we know for sure that the "Ultra" won't outclass the pro? That seems like a pretty broad assumption.

Apple is no stranger to packaging performance and features together. The Ultra could, for all we know, house a larger battery, more RAM, more powerful SoC (maybe M series like the iPad Pro), better cameras, etc.

I don't think "Identical to Pro, but it can fold" is something we know at this point.

Should be just called a Fold but then again I don't think they would want to call it that with Samsung/Google calling their devices folds. Ultra seems like it should have 3 camera's to warrant the Ultra name.
 
I was convinced it would be Ultra, and maybe it still will be. But it's lame if Apple and Samsung use the same name for their foldables.

I'd like Apple to go with Duo personally at this point.

All rumors are pointing to compromise in the camera department. Most other foldables have a camera array that's not as good as their slab counterpart and so far the leaked dummy models have it with 2 cameras instead of 3. I dont think there woukd be a compromise in CPU/RAM etc

Hey, everybody who will pay attention, EVERYONE in Apple calls Gurman the greatest to ever do it! See how much I know about what’s going on inside Apple? You won’t hear anyone else making up… I mean reporting stuff like this!

Backwards tech with Touch ID, inferior camera like the air. So yes inferior device with a gimmicky feature

When Samsung released their Apple Watch Ultra clone a month before Apple actually released theirs, they called it the Pro. I remember that this was assumed that Apple would call theirs Apple Watch Pro but they changed it to Ultra. Not sure if that's what was it originally going to be called, but I wouldn't be surprised if they pivot the name away from Ultra for the fold.
 
If anything, to me, this lends more credence to the idea that it will not be called the iPhone ultra.
Apple would absolutely not be throwing around and official marketing name internally.
Also, just within the last year, we have seen the MacBook Neo and iPhone Air, two names that were absolutely not expected.
People expected an iPhone 17 Air and a product simply called the MacBook, neither of those things happened.
Same with the 16e and 17e.

Apple’s prior naming conventions tells me that this product is going to have a name of its own that directly relates to its main feature over the other iPhones, in this case that it has two screens on it, one of which that unfolds into a tablet- like form factor.
That’s why I still think the most likely name is something like the “iPhone Duo” or even something just as simply on the nose as “iPhone Fold”.

The only products that Apple has used the term “Ultra” with is the Apple Watch, which is already targeted at the sports market, where the term “Ultra” is regularly found, and a SOC suffix, which is not a product, it’s a part of a product.

The dummies, leaked cases and screen and camera plateau protectors consistently indicate only two camera lenses, no Face ID, no action button, and possibly even no MagSafe. There’s no question that the Ultra will be inferior to the Pro in terms of hardware features, aside from the larger extra screen and different aspect ratio (which is a matter of preference if you find it superior or inferior).
