If people didn't know what the iPhone could and couldn't do before plunking one down, they shouldn't go about complaining afterward.

1) It's a phone.

2) Do research before to see if it fits your needs. Don't be a lemming.

3) If it doesn't meet what you need, DON'T BUY IT! Don't be a lemming.

4) If you become distraugt about it after the fact, get a phone that makes you happy.

5) Don't complain about it if you never even tried using the phone.

Who else gets tired of the smartphone connoisseurs that jump on here and get panties in a bunch about frickin crap like SMS and MMS, go on some rant about how great other smartphones are without paying attention to the fact that the iPhone has an iPod built in.

Seriously. No other phone has an iPod built in. Oh, a lot will play digital media files, but as 160 million iPods have said, the iPod is the best digital media players on the market. I bought my iPhone because I wanted a combo iPhone/cell phone. All the extra stuff like Internet and e-mail has been pretty much gravy since I didn't use them before and really didn't care to without the seamless syncability with Mac OS.

OK, there are better pure smartphones. Please, go buy them. I'm sure RIM will take your money for a BlackBerry. But if you're going to slam all the crap that iPhones don't have, please don't leave out the can't-be-overlooked iPod factor.

You can't attack iPhone users because they want better features that can be made on the iPhone and wanted their voices to be heard at least somewhere.

So what? The iPod is nice but the new Nokias have really good media players that sync with anything and have all the missing functions the iPhone doesn't.

Apple need to up their game, what was revolutionary in 2007 and 2008 no longer cuts the mustard in 2009.

:)
Okay, so today I was thinking about how crazy popular the iPhone has gotten... yet it's one of the MOST SERIOUSLY CRIPPLED smartphones ever made. I got to thinking how much I love the iPhone, but deep deep deep down inside I wish it had the features of other phones.

I was talking to my brother last night and he still loves his iPhone but he was like... I really mostly just use it as a regular phone lately.... and how come I can't send pictures to someone elses phone and why aren't we allowed to text in landscape mode... it seems so easy for them to add.... why can't you edit the contrast and brightness of your photos?

So a few of those things are doable through downloading extra applications from the app store. Some of them cost money and some are free, but then you have all these extra apps you have to launch and clutter up your homescreen with all of these icons to give us BASIC FEATURES?

Why can't we have a background color or picture on our home screen?
Why can't we change our SMS tone (those 6 tones are really bad)
Why can't we text in landscape so that when we're lying down or not sitting perfectly straight we can still hold the phone (it's almost impossible to type with 2 thumbs in that position, because you can't grip the phone with both hands well enough)
Where's our promised Push Notifications?

I guess I'm secretly embarrassed to have an iPhone. Yes the touch screen and iPod functions are the best out there, but for pete's sake... we've been waiting almost 2 years for standard features.

I guess you can tell me to get another phone, but I don't like any other phones, I just want some integrated features on my iPhone because I feel a little left out in some areas.

Sorry for the long post. Anyone else secretly hate their iPhone sometimes? I wish Apple would at least give us a hint for what might be coming. It always feels as if we're just constantly waiting and waiting... then when we finally do get an update, it usually adds stuff that I really don't care about and then starts the waiting again.

**** here we go again. I hate my iphone not secretly.

My WinMo phone was far more powerful and flexible than the iPhone. The iPhone is far more stable and has the app store.

if i were more of a power user/road warrior i think i would opt for the power of WinMo from full bluetooth functionality (i hate the fact that cant voicedial with my headset on the iphone) to the ability to edit Word and Excel files, use skype and slingbox and a host of other programs.

For my current needs the iPhone is sufficient. If it had copy/paste, MMS and full bluetooth then i would say it is superb.

There is no perfect phone out there, you have to decide which features you need and which you can live without.

I do not hate the iPhone but I just have the bigger version of it ... a Macbook Air. I have a phone that does all my basic text, web and gps. My Air bluetooth to 3G so I could care less about the safari on my phone.

Most of the time, I do not use my phone outside of contracting people. Call them or text them, thats it.

Crotalus Joe, good for you to have a WinMo phone. I have one and been playing videos since 2005. TCPMP is the VLC of WinMo. I do not have to convert my videos to certain format, just throw it in there. Bluetooth tethering is easy with a Mac and a WinMo.

I love it!!! but at the same time I hate some of the cheap aspects of it. I feel as though it could have a slightly better build quality but thats just me.

Software wise, I have no complaints. It does everything I want it to do.

My view as an ex iPhone owner is that what it does well it does better than any other device out there but it had a few too many deficiencies for my specific needs:

Good bits
It has, without a doubt, the best mobile browser available on a phone or other small device
It has the best media player of any phone
It has the best way of purchasing apps of any phone
It has the best OS of any phone

Not so good bits:
Battery life is appalling if you use the device to its potential
Bluetooth functionality is limited
No way of inviting people to meetings from the calendar
Phone functionality is limited

In the end, what I did was get a Samsung i780 to use as a phone and PDA and an iPod touch for everything else - I couldn't be happier because I have a phone that does everything I need it to do with a battery that will last 2 days under load and an iPod touch to get access to all the good bits of an iPhone :)

I love my iphone. No complaints, no missing features. If you bought an iphone and it doesn't do what you want, sell it and buy something you like.

I think this thread is an interesting one. By now if a person isn't aware of what the iPhone can and cannot do they aren't doing enough research.

Eventually Apple will get around to adding things that probably should have been on the phone since version 1.0.

I don't think there is even one person in this thread that did not do their research before buying their iPhone. No one here feels "tricked" that their iPhone doesn't have a certain feature. The "you should have researched what you were buying" argument really doesn't apply on an Apple fan website. We all knew what we were buying. That said, You don't have to be 100% enamoured with the iPhone to buy one. It is perfectly reasonable to hope Apple adds more features to their next firmware.

We truly are a sniveling, whiny generation. No one is happy with anything anymore. 2 years ago, Apple releases this amazing smartphone called the iPhone that every other manufacturer is still trying to catch up to. Yet, we sit here complaining that it doesn't do enough.

You knew what you were getting into. If you don't like it, sell it. Go buy something else. That's what's great about a democracy and capitalism, you can do what you want and you have choice. Simple as that. You should have researched it more before buying it. Yeah, i wish my iPhone could do more; I wish it could make my bed and my coffee in the morning. But you know what, it doesn't; I knew that going into it.

Geez.

Listen. I think you're missing what I said. There's no other phone I'd rather be using. I just get discouraged sometimes when I see someone elses phone that has very convenient features such as copy and paste and I wonder why the magical iPhone doesn't have that. It's rather sad. I know what I can get from the App store, but the stuff people REALLY want, Apple needs to give it to us directly because it breaks the app store rules. Is it so much to ask to be able to have the super-awesome iPhone AND have some new features like other phones have had for years and years?

The other day, I wanted to send my friend a picture but, he doesn't have email on his phone... so I decided to send him an MMS... so I had to look up the correct email protocol for his carrier... then I had to start a new mail message... oops, I need to know his number... go into contacts... memorize his number... repeat it in my head a dozen times while I'm going back to do the whole process over again... go back into Safari, look at the MMS protocol for his carrier again, and finally send the image.... This is what using a smart phone is all about?

Of course on the other hand it would have been nice for the phone to have some of those basic features (SMS character count?) when it came out. Having a phone that can get software updates is useless if the updates it gets don't address those basic issues.

That said, I hope that the next hardware update comes out in the June timeframe cause that is when my 2yr contract is up and I can finally start using my FAN discount.

Isn't this entire thread simply another one among countless others that whine incessantly about the iPhone's lack of features? I have heard everything in this thread before on many occasions, on this forum alone. The whole 'I secretly hate it' thing is just trying to (poorly) disguise the thread's true intentions. Just like everyone else said: you knew what features you were getting, and which ones you weren't. You still bought it. Get over it.

I've always said that if I wanted a business phone I'd buy a Blackberry.

But, I don't, so I bought the best smartphone there is, the iPhone. I love it (still).

I still love my first gen iPhone, for what it is, what it does, and how it does it.

Spaz, you may be a demi-god, but secretly hating things (and people?) for failing to live up to your expectations, rather than cherishing them for what they do well, is not very godly.

Nothing and nobody's perfect, so loosen up a bit and focus on the good not the bad.

Otherwise, I'd hate to be :
- your wife, the day you find out she can't cook a soufflé properly, in spite of all the great meals she's already made you
- your cat, the day it brings you a dead mouse, in spite of all the hours it already spent purring on your lap
- in fact, almost anyone you know, secretly hated for the shortcomings you perceive them to have

I secretly love the iPhone even more than I'm willing to admit, specially now since I've been promoting other phones and learning how bad they are.

Yes, it's far from perfect. But for me it's still the one with more potential and the more enjoyable phone to use.

that's why we CAN be a sniveling, whiny generation. We expect and want the best. We're pushing Apple to bring out the next, best Smartphone ever.

Enough with the fanboy comments.

Just like everyone else said: you knew what features you were getting, and which ones you weren't. You still bought it. Get over it.

Problem with this argument is that the iPhone is NOT a static product. We all knew this when we bought it. With every firmware update, there is change. This is why people on MR stay up all night waiting for a firmware release. If I didn't want any changes to my cellphone, I would have bought a Win Mo phone. You should only be allowed to say "you still bought it. Get over it" if you bought the iPhone and have not updated its firmware ever. If you have, then you're a hypocrite.

Hear hear! God, I get soo tired of threads like this. Let me make it clear:

1 I don't use MMS, never have, never will. I don't care if Apple introduce it.
2 I don't use SMS forwarding. SMS forwarding is the last refuge of generaly racist, sexist, homophobic "humour". I've never wanted to forward an SMS in my life.
3 Flash based websites are not among the sites I visit.
4 I use my phone camera to take notes. I use a real camera when I want to take pictures. Never seen a phone camera with as good a lens as a real one.
5 I do use my iPod. I used to carry a first gen shuffle and a crappy basic Nokia.
6 I like to be able to access the web wherever I am.
7 My colleague's blackberry can't see PDFs that I can see on my iPhone
8 Her blackberry can't see Excel files that my iPhone can read.
9 I don't give a tuppeny screw for different SMS tones, maybe because I'm not having an affair.
10 I always wanted a phone with no buttons. I grew up in the 70s when the idea of a screen that changed configuration depending on your needs was SciFi.

I love my phone I don't hate it.

what really bugs me about iphone is Apple lack of response on simple features. i watch people on youtube close to cry about mms, people posting about copy paste everywhere, even google search box have sugestions on these matters. so, its a global phenomena, theres nothing hidding it.

- Example:
How i can find how many minutes had my last call? My recent history don't show that information.

Is that some transcendental feature that needs some space-era technology to be implemented? I think not.

Why isn't implemented after one year? Dunno.

- Do Apple know that in Portuguese language strings get bigger than English conterparts and are trim'ed by "..." ??
No try to get your Mac address, or the precise time for a call. You get the "..." thing. Unsmart phones will roll the information when selected, on tiny displays. In my iphone i get a string with "..." and about 3 parts of the display wasted with gray stripes.
very well done:
