Just an observation, oh trust me i'm not losing any sleep over this. Just that i've never seen anyone with the latest iphone in those areas before , when i do its one of the older iphones like the 3gs . Never one of these hard to find iphone 6's that almost cost as much as a months mortgage/rent

It makes no sense. You have to have credit to get approved for a phone on the carriers payment plan. Without a job and bad credit they won't approve you.

Poor communities can get whatever phone they want no matter the price. Everything else is paid for by the government. Food, health insurance, rent, utilities etc.

Have you ever thought about the subsidies by the government for people who aren't poor?

Now that subsidies are slowly becoming a thing of the past, everyone that couldnt afford an iphone before will now have one. I've seen lot of people with androids before that couldnt afford an iphone but now that you have to put $0 down and only pay around $40-50 taxes and walk out the store with a shiny new device. i think ill see an explosion of iphones in general and mostly in the poor communities that couldnt have afforded it before .
Who cares who owns what. Be happy with what you have and don't worry about others. Don't be an elitist.

A lot work cash only jobs, many sell their prescriptions that are free, etc. It isn't difficult to find ways to make cash if you don't have to worry about paying for the necessities.

More power to them. They've found out how to live without being a worker bee slave. Who cares?

This country is beyond repair, no matter what anyone says to the contrary. Might as well enjoy it while you can.

Having said that- you don't know peoples' situation.

Perhaps... someone HAD a decent job, had toys, phones etc., lost the job, and now they need some assistance in the meantime. Do the toys automatically go bye bye in that case? Not necessarily.

Either way- what does it matter to you, OP? MYOFB.

What's the matrix we're using to gauge affordability? Aren't most college kids financially shaky? They absolutely blossom into something nicely but in the tone of this message, they may be in over their heads as well with iPhones, iPads, MacBook Pros and Airs. I'm just wondering.

It doesn't matter what people do with their money. I DO, however have issue with my taxes paying for something that their "iphone" money should be paying for but (sippin my tea) that's none of my business.

Exactly....should that kid who's in college, a grad student or just out with tens of thousands of dollars of student debt around their neck be spending money on the latest Macbooks and iPhones?

It's really easy to get judgmental in threads like this. One of the best lessons my dad taught me was not to concern myself with how other people spend their money.

All of these peasants owning iPhones is disgusting!. Thinking about buying the solid gold 6 plus to distinguish myself from the average scum.

LoL

God I love macrumors and it's hilarious witty responses.

Thanks Ramio, made me belly laugh :D

I don't get what point OP is trying to make with this thread

Basically that people couldn't afford $199 down before so now they can afford it via AT&T Next?

Terrible thread but to be honest op is not that far off. As with credit cards and such. Some will be seeking to pay the smaller amount over time even though it will add up to me over time

Sometimes people of little means have some type of item that might be considered a luxury item to them, because a family member has bought it for them as a gift. My mother is not well off but she has a Samsung Galaxy S4 that we bought her for Christmas. We have her on our account and pay the payments. We would have bought her an iPhone but she needed a bigger screen. When her phone needs replaced, we will get her a new iPhone. Just because someone is "poor" and has a new iPhone does not mean that they are spending money on it.

I worked in a store that was in the middle of a poor community. The average household income is about 28K/year and I dealt with most of the ones that fell below that average. Still, almost everyone that came into the store, minus the elderly who rocked flip phones, had a smartphone. The iPhone was the most popular one I saw.

You will be amazed how people can find money to pay for electronic toys, cigarettes, and beer while complaining they have no money for food or home and auto repairs. I don't think carrier payment plans will change things too much. People who might not be able to drop $200 or $300 on a phone will go pick up an iPhone 5 or 5S once the 2 year contract price goes down to $50 or $0 since these are still plenty capable phones despite not being the newest model available.

this would only bother someone if they held their phone as one of their highest valued posessions.

Seriously, I can't wait for my iPhone 6, but I have way more things that I hold at a higher regard than an iPhone. If you really want to separate yourself from the herd of iPhoners, get a case thats like $299 - like the element case black ops, or Ronin wood aluminum cases.

Other than that, I could see where it looks crazy where people collect food stamps and have an iPhone 6.

And?

This isn't new. I spend a lot of time in low end neighbors for my job and they have been full of iPhones for years. $0 on contract iPhones have been around for a long time.

Ever since T-Mobile and the other carriers started dropping the subsidy and $0 down iPhones became the norm, I've been saying that it only helps Apple to sell more iPhones. Makes them easier to get and easier to upgrade every single year now.

This guy is an idiot. Buying a iPhone because he taught it was a status symbol. Who cares what other people buy? It's their live and their problem.

Being able to afford something has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not someone actually owns that something, these days.
