It would probably break the OP's heart to know that Apple values the sale to those customers the same as his purchase. It's cold hard revenue. Apple doesn't care if it comes from an Apple fanboy, somebody who scrapes together money to make a payment each month or someone organized 50 scalpers to buy them on launch day to sell on the gray market.

As long as they made the sale...it's all the same to them. In fact, they probably value new customers in different markets around the world than they value the long time 'Apple fan' who's going to run out and buy the new phone no matter what.

If only people bought phones befitting of their station. There should be some sort of legislation on this.

Seriously, smartphones are so ubiquitous now. Suburbanites are buying them for their 6 year old. And that $650/ year/ every other year isn't going to bring a family out of poverty. If you can spread the payments out for two years interest free, why not?

It makes no sense. You have to have credit to get approved for a phone on the carriers payment plan. Without a job and bad credit they won't approve you.

In many cases, bad credit just means a higher deposit, not just the typical 200 payment.

no cuz government handouts to the rich are ok.

Nope, W Bushphones. We all know Bush started that program.

See people just spew the incorrect information they get somewhere else.

To the OP you have not explained how it's easier to get an iPhone now versus under the old subsidy.

Someone who owes $1M in taxes and pays $250K just got a government subsidy of $750K when they could afford to pay the $1M. Yet everyone complains about the family who got $5000 in food stamps.

AT&T wouldn't let me upgrade my 5S 2 days early so I could get the 6 on launch day so I ended up going with their Next plan. So, I'm basically paying full price for the device with payments on it spread out over the next several months. This doesn't mean that I'm paying less for the device. It actually means that I'm paying more for it. The original iPhone cost me around $700. The iPhone 6 plus is costing me around $950. These devices are NOT cheaper now.

Now that subsidies are slowly becoming a thing of the past, everyone that couldnt afford an iphone before will now have one. I've seen lot of people with androids before that couldnt afford an iphone but now that you have to put $0 down and only pay around $40-50 taxes and walk out the store with a shiny new device. i think ill see an explosion of iphones in general and mostly in the poor communities that couldnt have afforded it before .

Are you mad about this? What are you going to do to combat the spread of the iPhone 6 in poor communities?

The problem isn't about the family "who truly" needs the government help. The BIG ISSUE in this country is the people who falsify information so that they can receive government help. Thus taking away from those who truly do need it...

Its a problem when you see a family parking a fairly new vehicle at the supermarket lot, then paying with an EBT card at the register..

That in itself is the true issue..

How do you know that it's their vehicle? Or that they bought the car when they were employed and now they're not? Or that the vehicle is about to be repossessed? Or they're picking up groceries for an elderly or disabled neighbor?

Maybe the next family you see who you judge to be cheating the system is actually not.

The idea of providing mobile phones to low income families started under Reagan with roots in an agreement dating back to Wilson.

The current program funded by Safelink grants & not tax payer money originated under Bush in 2008.

Mobile phones for low income people a great GOP idea actually.

If you get an iPhone 6 now that you couldn't afford last year, you have your financial priorities way, way wrong.

thats not the point , the point is that you dont have to come up with the $950 upfront nor the $199/$299 that usually is required when you buy the phone on subsidy. Now if you have $50 (taxes) in your pocket thats all you need to walk out the store with a new phone and pay it over time . Some people dont care if their paying more, the $45 a month is what entices them bec the payment looks so low to get a brand new latest phone. It doesnt matter if they're paying more in the long run.

I find that worrying about my fiscal health is generally more productive than worrying about how others spend their money #

You got the biggest phone with 128gb of memory, those were not available before. You could have got a 16gb 6 for $700. Apples and oranges. Larger device, larger memory, larger cost. Your choice to get the plus 128.

Whoa. While I agree that $0 down is definitely a way for folks to get an iPhone without having any money up front, they do have to still pay for the phone. Don't be so quick to assume that they're just getting the iPhone and not paying for it. I assume people in middle-class areas that you clearly don't hang out in also have the same phone under the same plan and they possibly would default on their contract. It happens in all classes. I don't get the point of the thread as a whole.

Just an observation, oh trust me i'm not losing any sleep over this. Just that i've never seen anyone with the latest iphone in those areas before , when i do its one of the older iphones like the 3gs . Never one of these hard to find iphone 6's that almost cost as much as a months mortgage/rent
It bothered you enough to start a narrow-minded thread about it full of rash assumptions.

OP I waiting on you to explain how it's easier for someone to buy an iPhone under the new system compared to the old subsidy model. I bet my houses that you can't.
