The non pro 14 barely seems an upgrade, nothing ground breaking from the 13 or even the 12 really.

I have an 11 Pro and honestly, nothing in the 12/13/14 makes me want to buy a new one.

A 48MP photo is going to look the same on FB/IG as a 12MP photo and the battery even on the 14 Pro is going to need to be charged every night as you are not going to get 2 full days out of it.

Is there a purpose/reason for the small row of pixels above the island ?? If the edge of the island was flush with the screen top, these pixels would be part of the lower display. Not much, but not wasted. Of course this setup would not be an island, just a pill shaped notch, but seems more efficient. Just asking... Do not care either way, just interested whether this might be purposefully sub-optimal so as to be different. Thx.
I don’t think there is a purpose, except for the visual design. They want the “island” to be separate from the border of the display. It arguably looks better than a dynamic notch would. But it also causes the sensor cutout to be positioned lower than the notch was, thus eating more into the space of the display, in particular for video and other screen-filling content. Moving the sensors down also conceivably makes the internal layout of the electronics easier (more room than close to the edge of the case), but I doubt that that’s the main motivation for the change.

The animations of the “dynamic island” look slick, but overall I don’t find it a good trade-off for having the sensors at a lower position, and the animations also have the potential to be distracting. I’ll probably be skipping that phase of iPhone design (also because there is no new mini). We’ll see what they’ll do in 2-3 years.

They are ads.
What he meant was that Apple is just another company. With Steve it wasn’t … and we all miss him - his direction and philosophy. He wasn’t perfect, but he was a visionary.
BTW, I think that Dynamic Island is just a gimmick not a practical improvement.

Every single year Apple holds these types of events, and every single year there's always some debate (usually complaining) about the lack of new features in some of these products, and generally I usually see at least one or two things that I can look at and say are cool, but this year, even I'm floored by the absolute phoning it in by Apple.

iPhone 14 Dynamic Island? I wasn't even impressed with the pill and hole punch out that was rumored, and somehow they made it even worse with this gimmick. Dynamic Island is the new version of the Touch Bar. 48MP camera? Anyone who knows anything about photography knows that megapixels don't equal a better photo.

AirPods Pro 2 is the EXACT SAME THING as the first version. Like they didn't even attempt to modify the design or anything, and good luck getting touch controls to work on those short stems.

AirPods 3 without Magsafe? Who even would be asking for this? I don't even understand why this exists. What's the point?

Apple Watch Ultra? I just don't see the point of this. Like the Wayfinder thing is cool, but not for $800.

The one thing I know for sure I'll buy from Apple is more of their stock. I've been making a killing the last several years and it now appears that Apple is embracing a strategy of now selling last year's technology as brand new, and if people want to buy it, I'm all for it! LOL
Their stock is worth owning because they are just starting to monetize user data. I guess the smell of blood was too good to resist and sooner or later they had to take a bite. So at this point, there is no difference between iOS and Android as far as privacy goes.

I’m now completely disillusioned by all of big tech. They are in some sort of a surveillance race all in the name of selling ads, yet as we have seen in the last couple of years it can and does get used in very sad ways.

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

It's like the presenters are so dependent on their technology that they have become part robot.
Maybe that's why they lack soul.

The 11 minute recap did a great job of condensing it, but even for that I had to watch at 1.5x speed and skip some bits.
I had to laugh at the "$799 for a watch is a STEAL!!! We were expecting at least $1000!" bit. He needs to wipe Tim Cook's RDF grease off his face before his next recap.

As for results:
My iPhone X is good enough for me. The iPhone 13 I use for work is fine but I wouldn't have paid to upgrade myself.
My Series 4 Watch is good enough. It's a watch. It counts steps. It alerts me of messages. It tells me the weather.
At $350 (local exchange rate at the time) it was a good deal. I wouldn't pay more than 2x the price just for improved accuracy in body temperature or calorie counting.

So maybe why they came across as so sterile and fake is because they themselves know they're trying to hype something that they themselves know they wouldn't buy if they were in the shoes of people listening. Steve Jobs doing his thing or Phil Schiller take a jump with an iBook were presentations where we know they actually believed in what they were saying.
Your feelings on the watch mirror mine perfectly. Honestly between that and satellite calls.. would be a very limited use case for people who live in the city. I have 2 kids that are little, other than work I barely make it out my front door.

Just basically stalling innovative idea for long as possible...Mostly - Software tweak & just tiny hardware change.

Just saying in my own opinion - Once you have a iPhone 14 pro max you will be confused what's different between iPhone 13 pro max - that's the beauty part of the process 😂.

Exactly what I wanted from new AirPods Pro. Couldn’t give a monkeys about lossless, I’ll keep the battery life and pass on the placebos, cheers. The tangible difference in a likely not-ideal listening environment using tiny earbuds? Imperceptible, you’ll never convince me otherwise.

Watch Series 8 was disappointing, my S5 fine for another year.

I guess one reason why the event felt like "nothing new" is of course that leakers got everything right, so we knew basically what they were going to say at every turn.

They made the prospect of getting APP 2 look appealing, despite the utility-focused case looking like Ive's worst nightmare.

Speaking of design nightmares. The new Ultra watch. Ew. Well, at least it's functional. Anyone ever complaining again that Apple is serving a niche audience with their Pro computers, I will point to this watch that is supposed to serve pretty much only people into extreme sports.

I think the island approach to the camera cutouts felt very Apple, in a good way. They managed to make a cutout feel like a true non-issue, perhaps even like a feature. Looking forward to getting a phone that works like this at some point.

A15/A16 - true stagnation here, but the blow is softened somewhat with having the knowledge beforehand and that processing power really isn't a concern for 99% of phone users anyway. Even the A10 can still feel snappy.

Watch any of the old keynotes with Steve Jobs and friends: what a complete difference!
They were talking like they just came out of their workshops while being busy, telling us what they did before going back in: the kind of enthousiasme one has when just finished a piece of art or project.
Not the current advertisement bs we have come to get used to.
And indeed we are being told information like if we just finished kindergarten, treated as no-no's.

Where is the delight and pride of people having worked for many months on a certain project and making long hard days and now being able to show the rest of us what they came up with?

Products are interesting but kind of logical improvements.
Nothing shocking, imho.

Thanks for the 11 mins recap Dan! Well done, as usual!

Who really cares any more? The reality is we have everything we need in these devices, and the manufacturers are struggling to find new features that are compelling.

99.9% of us have a smartphone and computer that does everything we need and more, and can now buy a device at a reasonable price that does what we need.

Until the next big jump in use case, the technology is ahead of the requirement. I’ve worked in IT for over 25 years, and I genuinely hope the next step is that we stop our obsession with the latest and greatest and look at the bigger picture.

Great coverage from macrumors on a non event.

Sigh... looks like I'll be buying a 13 mini and selling my 12 mini. Mostly to get a fresh battery, the current one is down to 86% health after 2 years and it's already annoying.

I'm not really a friend of the notch. But I had bought an iPhone with it. Unfortunately, it fell down and was totally destroyed. This year I was really looking forward to the new Pro but I will buy a 13 Pro until the 15 next Year. The 14 Pro Max is pretty but really not worth the price. No USB C and thus only an interim solution up to the 15. We keep waiting ;-)

Worst event ever, boring, fail, I miss Steve Jobs keynotes, courage, innovation my ass, etc.

Did I get it right? 😆

Yes. First time I switched it off after a few minutes. Macrumors will tell me the results.

🙄 “Dynamic Island”

Well I guess it sounds/sells better than “lazy design failure,” LOL.

Good on Apple for trying, but I don’t think dynamic island is going to change anyones experience too much. Does anyone really notice the notch? Looks like a solution in search of a problem. Plus it reminds me of the TV show Fantasy Island (showing my age I know)

Wow, talk about trashing just about everything.

- comparing dynamic island with Touch Bar doesn’t make any sense. They have nothing to do with each other, neither from a hardware or a software perspective.

-Apple engineers know megapixels don’t equal better photos. That’s why they were always behind het competition when it comes to pixels. But in the end they couldn’t stay behind or people like you would complain Apple sells outdated tech. And I’m sure Apple found a way to use the quadpixel technology to improve 12MP photos.

Airpods Pro: Of course they are the same iconic design. What did you expect?

AirPods without Magsafe: they’re cheaper. And not everyone has magsafe cables or cares about wireless charging.

Watch Ultra: if you never leave your house and are not into extreme sports, this indeed is not a watch for you. Buy the 8 or SE instead. But don’t complain there are people with other interests and needs than you.

Nice of Apple to keep the price the same on the new iPhones and to make the price of Apple Watch Ultra at 799. Was thinking it would be a bad look for Apple to increase prices with words like recession being thrown out.

Well so far the most compelling feature of the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the larger camera sensor. That’s a pretty big upgrade. Otherwise, the rest is typical Apple, which is very small incremental upgrades that won’t matter much at all, but Apple describes as ‘magical’. Dynamic Island Is a notification bubble. But Apple says it’s ”a revolutionary new way to interact with your iPhone”. Come on now, that’s really silly. Apple just applies marketing hyperbole to everything. They keep insisting that that camera lens glass is sapphire crystal, and it is not. Now they detail that by saying it’s a coating. What??

I do like the purple though. When I get tired of my S22 Ultra I might be willing to try the iPhone 14 Pro Max for its camera. Very surprised that it still cannot shoot 4K 60. That’s actually kind of shocking.
