If Apple makes such a big deal out of the island, I guess a few more years before we get an all display iphone.
This is my fear exactly. they glossed over the notch, never even mentioned it, because they new it was a poor solution. Now they’ve given it a name. Guess it means we are years away from a true full screen phone. What will they say when the “dynamic island“ gimic is no longer needed?

I love the new iPhone 14 Pro and it's definitely a worthy upgrade on my 12 Pro. Even the buyback price of my old phone was pretty impressive here in Spain! 🇪🇸

I'm looking forward to pre-ordering, but I'm disappointed they've done away with the midnight blue and I'm back to Space Grey again. 😞

I was initially impressed by the Apple Watch Ultra, but once again, Apple have completely fudged it up when it comes to a fitness watch. This could have been epic, but it's not.

No external Bluetooth support. No ANT+ support.

If you are a serious amateur or athlete, it's just a total no-go.

I guess if you like walking up mountains and going on long hikes it works, but then you get all the same functionality from your phone and the battery will last longer. When you're hiking you have pockets so it's more convenient to throw a phone in your bag or pocket.

For runners, the Apple Watch is still nice but since it won't connect to ANT+. Any serious runner would go for a Garmin.

As a diver, the certification is nice, but this is not a serious diving device. Divers again would use specific diving hardware and it's just a "nice-to-have" for holiday PADI divers.

And finally the battery life. "Whoo-hoo". My series 6 Apple Watch only has 81% battery life now so it's destined for a box shortly and I barely get 12 hours of life on it under normal usage. The new battery saver certainly has helped and it does seem to be draining much more slowly but with less than a day of use on that version of Watch OS 9, it's still hard to tell.

But even 36 hours on a single charge on the Ultra is pretty poor. I know the Garmin has an inferior display, but you get over 8-10 days on a single charge, and that's when using it daily. 36 hours just isn't good enough. The battery saver mode time of 60 hours should be standard.

So all in all, I love the look of the watch. It looks very cool indeed and it'll work brilliantly, but Apple has not nailed it.

They could have had something epic on their hands, but they just have another consumer device which will suit the average Joe but can't touch on what Garmin offer with their smartwatch devices when it comes to sports.

I think I will stick it out with my iPhone 7 plus (changed battery) until iPhone 15. I might consider Apple watch 8 or the new SE, not sure about those yet. Or just buy old Apple watch 7 as it's almost the same as 8 frankly. The Apple watch ultra was cheaper than I expected but looks very ugly imo, not that I would buy it anyway. Maybe it will find its segment of users

The one thing I know for sure I'll buy from Apple is more of their stock. I've been making a killing the last several years and it now appears that Apple is embracing a strategy of now selling last year's technology as brand new, and if people want to buy it, I'm all for it! LOL
Sales of Apple products were dropping like a rock for a few years. Apple kept raising prices to compensate for it.

That changed in the past year or two... not sure if it was because of the M-series or because of the pandemic... but I think it was temporary.

Apple's marketshare is maybe growing a bit, but I think it's just that the smartphone market is shrinking.

IDK... I sold my Apple stock a few years ago. The two big things Apple could get into would be:

1 - Cars. They could make a ton of money here, but it'd involve investing a ton of time and/or money. If Apple wanted to quietly enter the market, they'd need to have a partnership with somebody like BYD. Although... maybe the Foxconn car is Apple? That car isn't actually for sale, is it? It seems plausible that Foxconn's cars will ultimately enter the market as the Apple Car...

2 - AR/VR. I could see this adding another $T to Apple's market cap. Of course, with Apple already as big as they are, adding $1T is only giving a 40% return...

The car has way bigger potential between the two. And cars are a bit of an insane pipedream - look at the thousands of defunct auto companies. Look at Lucid - Lucid has Saudi money, but they still can't actually fix their manufacturing issues and actually mass produce the product. And it's not like Apple/Foxconn's track record for solving manufacturing issues is all that great - look at the AirPower.

the keynote sucked. Did anyone like it? Stale, sterile, fake, and stupid.

Why did they talk to us like we are babies who don’t in stand technology or tech terms. Why rehash features that have been in products for generations? And why did everything seem to lack soul?

The island is dope though, but the older keynotes were actually watchable start to finish.

These just feel like ads
I'm pretty sure they have dumbed the keynotes down intentionally because they are trying to reach a broader/mainstream audience. In earlier days, it was mostly just us tech nerds who watched the these. Now, they seem to be trying to expose as many people as possible to it. Did you catch the Severance teaser at the end? That alone (instead of some weird live music finale) seems to prove my point.

Every single year Apple holds these types of events, and every single year there's always some debate (usually complaining) about the lack of new features in some of these products, and generally I usually see at least one or two things that I can look at and say are cool, but this year, even I'm floored by the absolute phoning it in by Apple.

iPhone 14 Dynamic Island? I wasn't even impressed with the pill and hole punch out that was rumored, and somehow they made it even worse with this gimmick. Dynamic Island is the new version of the Touch Bar. 48MP camera? Anyone who knows anything about photography knows that megapixels don't equal a better photo.

AirPods Pro 2 is the EXACT SAME THING as the first version. Like they didn't even attempt to modify the design or anything, and good luck getting touch controls to work on those short stems.

AirPods 3 without Magsafe? Who even would be asking for this? I don't even understand why this exists. What's the point?

Apple Watch Ultra? I just don't see the point of this. Like the Wayfinder thing is cool, but not for $800.

This. I mean, I don't necessarily think that Apple is phoning it in, but I'm always less and less impressed by each year's offerings. But, I think it's largely because technology is hitting that point where it's harder and harder to innovate. There's only so much you can fit in a small space, and there's only so much weight you can allow a device to be, as well as other factors such as the availability and cost of metals and raw materials.

Case in point: the main thing that'd actually get me excited about a new iPhone is if they upgraded the battery technology, so that the battery was half the weight and lasted twice as long. Wow...a light phone in my pocket that gave me 48 hours of "normal use", meaning I could comfortably use it "heavily" for an actual full day without charge - that'd actually be useful to me. 48 crammed-in megapixels isn't. But, I fully appreciate that future battery tech like lithium-sulfur isn't quite there yet. That's just one of many innovations that I'd love to see in the iPhone but isn't able to happen yet.

Same with the Apple Watch, I'd love it if they announced that there was accurate blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring. I'd also love it if their biometrics worked with AI to passively pick up on potential medical issues or lifestyle suggestions, rather than each working as a blunt tool. But again, it's not there yet.

Each to their own, but all of these upgrade bumps to resolution etc don't interest me at all. The satellite feature is cool though.

Who really cares any more? The reality is we have everything we need in these devices, and the manufacturers are struggling to find new features that are compelling.

99.9% of us have a smartphone and computer that does everything we need and more, and can now buy a device at a reasonable price that does what we need.

Until the next big jump in use case, the technology is ahead of the requirement. I’ve worked in IT for over 25 years, and I genuinely hope the next step is that we stop our obsession with the latest and greatest and look at the bigger picture.

Great coverage from macrumors on a non event.
I dare say if Apple had announced that the iPhone 14 had a USB-C port, that future iPhone 15 sales would be negligible. Yes once you seen most of the major functions improved like the camera, 5G, battery life, what else do you really need given A15/A16 processor performance for the foreseeable future given the increasing likelihood of the owner using it for several years.

Could it be that there is high inflation in the EU caused by all of their energy policies and political drama?

At the moment energy company & political both are playing a very dangerous game in a reality - none of them thinking for long terms just pure greed for their own wealth, motivation & power.

Society will have to suffer for their political’s stupidity decision.

iPhones where I live are over €100 more expensive. They kept 13, 12 and 12 mini around for sale and 12 mini is €829. Base iPhone 14 Pro is €1,339 (US$1,331). What greedy people working at this company.
If you wonder why the iPhones are more expensive this year, you should look at what has happened to the value of the Euro over the last year. Sadly, it is a pretty dramatic drop.

Just ordered an Apple Watch Ultra. Not sure if I will keep it: Pros - larger display, crash detection & brighter, big battery. Cons - Butt ugly, extra large, probably quite heavy, orange buttons. If the extra screen real estate and longer battery life are worth it, I can live with the other issues for a couple of years… maybe. All this is my personal taste, YMMV.

Rather than “butt ugly”, I’d call it “utilitarian”. That seems to be the way these kinds of sports oriented watches are in other brands. What is amazing is for Apple to stray so far from a focus on styling to something more functional in a watch. Jonny Ive must be having a very bad week as the Watch was one of his pet projects.

After Ivy it seems Apples’s hardware designers are just producing utilitarian models, the MBA for example is a flat square design with rounded corners. I hope Apple will give future Apple Watches this larger & brighter screen with the longer lasting battery using the current design language for other Apple Watches. As for “butt ugly” that’s my sole individual take on it, just me. I never meant to imply this was a universally good/bad/indifferent design. Beauty is definitely in the eyes of the beholder, and I’m sure many will love this utilitarian design.

Saw this article titled “Apple used to sell wonder. Now it sells fear” and thought it was such a weird take… is it me or does it say more about the author than Apple?

Definitely says more about the author than Apple. The Dynamic Island wasn’t expected, it looks fun, smart and even magical. It was probably the high point of the announcement. Even features like crash/fall detection festures etc. are proactive solutions to real world issues that assist people. Apple sells joy and always has.

True and the new Watch Ultra is definitely not about fear.

I can see why a writer might write that. It helps to have a hook in your story even if the hook is not fully true, it can be enough to catch people and bring them in to read the article.
