Let’s face it. WWDC was boring.
If you think about it, WWDC is for developers (it's in the acronym) and really isn't about new hardware products per se. In theory, if you're not a programmer, it could seem boring.
Personally, what I look for are game-changing productivity features such as Spotlight, Dashboard (RIP), Time Machine, Notes, iCloud - features that change the way you do things and make you more productive instead of giving you outlets to waste time. I guess the AI stuff could be considered game-changing but so far it hasn't changed much for my workflow.
One could argue that Apple is more about pleasing the pedestrians these days (esp. with iOS) rather than a focus on people who use their Mac for productivity. The reason is simple - there are more pedestrians to sell iPhones to, and that equals profit.
