The theme and the content of the event is irrelevant。Only the wording Scary have a little bit related. But i cant feel how M3 is so fast to be scared. When looking at the chinese translation of the event title 狠速登陸,it is a disaster of marketing. I cannot think of any similar usage of wording and it does not fit with original English meaning
Google Translate: "狠速登陸" = "Log in quickly"???!!! 🤔🤯🤣

There were several references to upgrading from an Intel iMac, and the way he talked about the current 24" being a replacement for the old 27" borders on being offensive.
*offensive ESPECIALLY as it ain't even 24", it's 23.5". 😠

Apparently “gaming’ was a holy mother of red herrings for this event. People were speculating AppleTV Pro with ray tracing earlier today… and even a dedicated console.
It was a such a boring event - until AAA games become a thing on Mac OS then there’s nothing to see. Interesting that the GPU improvements are being angled at AI.

Sure...

Apple Event - October 30 - YouTube

...perhaps you missed the fine print in my previous post...

<<
I clearly saw both M1 and M2 graphic comparisons throughout the presentation
>>

...Bolding added this time for clarity. ;)
I was asking about the specs, not the video.

I have since seen the MR recap with showed the speed gains. I just find it so odd that Apple would make comparisons to 2G old tech.

Could you have some dreams about market competitive RAM and SSD pricing? Please!

Could you have a dream about a Snow Leopard year or two to get macOS back to mostly "just works"?

Could you have a dream about an upcoming lotto drawing and then PM'ing me those winning numbers?

;)
😯 My brother from another mother! 🤩

The M1 single core speeds were all nearly the same for all four versions. There was about a 10% increase in the average single core speeds across the four M2 versions. No real enticement to upgrade to the M2 series. Memory capacity in the upper M2 models went up 50% (64GB to 96GB as an example).

I predicted that the max memory in the top M3 models would increment in similar fashion so my 14" laptop model will have had the opportunity for 64GB then 96GB and now 128GB of ram. The largest Apple installed SSD is still 8TB with a $2,200 adder across the three generations. By contrast, external 8TB SSD prices have significantly fallen. Perhaps the average single core speeds may have increased 10% going to the M3. That would be 20% increase over the M1 average speeds. But since the comparisons were to the M1 instead of the M2, there might not be that much of a gain in average single core speeds.

WiFi 6 has finally become WiFi 6E and Bluetooth has gone from v5 to v5.3.

There has been no video screen improvements across the three generations. So perhaps the carrot for the M4 will include micro-led screens? The weights are within a few ounces across three generations.

I am casually thinking about the 16" MBPro because I could make the letters bigger on the larger screen while displaying the same information I now have on my 14" screen. The reviews in the next few weeks will flesh out the pertinent details and illustrate whether there are real or just verbal marketing increases in real world numbers for the M3 family of processors.

In some ways, the M family has Apple boxed in. I hope they are working on a new successor family of chips because I think there is a limit to die downsizing.

Plus, the people who are posting about sticking with their Intel Macs because they see no reason to upgrade to the M3 probably have no good reason to even be using a desktop or laptop computer. They'd probably be just as well off with a $40 desktop calculator and something like an iPad or even a calculator and an Apple TV. That's a bit harsh but probably no worse than inferring that the M3 isn't a worthwhile upgrade from an Intel Mac.
It's not harsh, it's just wrong. How do you go from "using a desktop" (let's say 2018 Mini) office apps, spreadsheets, web search, folder & file management, 24-32 inch display for large workspace, and then say you could do that on a calculator? Nonsense.

I wish, I ain’t in control of it tho lol.

Apple 10 years from now: "and M13 is up to 25x faster than the latest Intel Macbook Pro"

Probably will be closer to 100x by then.

But, in fairness to Apple here. There are still customers using Intel Macs and Apple is trying to get them to upgrade to Apple Silicon machines. Spelling out just how massive an improvement it is helps to sell to those hold outs. The Intel processors Apple used had laughably bad iGPUs that I would never have considered under any circumstance. I always bought a discrete GPU system because the iGPUs were trash.

Not wishing to be picky but something quickly started to bother me that I noticed again and again and again.
That was the constant comparisons to M1 and not M2
...
When Nvidia launch their 5000 series cards next year? I expect them to talk about how much better they perform in comparison to their 4000 series cards and not constantly compare them to the 3000 series cards.
...
The M1 (1st attempt at a desktop chip) Came out in November 2020
...
Those are good points. I also thought this was weird, as well as the comparisons to Intel, which is even older in the product line.

It could be that they are targeting the consumers most likely to purchase new M3s....those of us with Intels or M1s.

M3 is nice but I suspect Apple have got so far ahead on their Apple Silicon that they now need to focus on other areas of the business more

Display technologies across all devices, battery technologies, redesigned Magic Keyboard folio (with function keys), other accessories improvements (Magic Mouse in particular)…

Software (OS and iOS etc) 🤔

AI technologies / Siri
Absolutely when it comes to software. Apples hardware is advanced but the software does not take advantage of this. Especially on the iPad.

Apple's "Scary Fast" 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time event was over in the blink of an eye, but if you missed it because of the unusual time, we have a quick overview of everything that Apple announced. If you want to watch the video in full, it only lasted a half an hour, because all Apple introduced was the new M3-series chips in MacBook Pro machines and iMacs.

We've recapped everything that you need to know in this super quick video you can watch before bed or catch in the morning, and we've also rounded up our coverage of the event.

MacBook Pro

iMac

Everything Else

The M3 iMac and MacBook Pro models can be ordered now, with the first orders set to ship out to customers next week. The M3 and M3 Pro machines will be available immediately, while M3 Max machines will ship out later in November.

The event in general was okay basically our laptop and iMac all have M3 now, cue the credits roll. Basically more graphics features on the chip, Dynamic Allocation was interesting. Typical most the performance talk was "graphic performance" or the few areas of Workstation class computing using Macs. For the average user you won't notice the performance booth because we're already crazy fast for you. So all in all the event was what we expected and if anything fewer new things than hoped for.

Now the real big deal that only some have commented on is the whole presentation was shot on iPhone 15 Max. Apple has already put out a behind the scenes video talking about how it was all done on a iPhone. John Prosser video pointed out in the end the whole presentation was a big iPhone commercial. I think iPhones lagging sale will get a nice bump from this "M3" event.

BTW…..the Intel iMac they were comparing to was the imac base i9-5600k. The Pro of that time had a 9th gen i9900k I believe (2019-). The current gen Intel processor is 14th gen with 15(m) and 15/16 Alder about to be released. Even the 13900k has a 60% performance uplift single core over the 5 year old (iMac PRO) processor. The one they used in comparison Was 120% vs. 2 Intel generation ago! This presentation and their ‘snappy’ benchmark comparisons were meant to be swallowed whole by unquestioning, non-critical thinking or technical viewers. Look at the numbers and use a bit of common sense.

With SwiftUI making it easier to write apps that work seamlessly on both iPadOS & macOS, expect the built-in Mac and iPad apps to start converging pretty quickly. Wait for WWDC24.

Speaking of which, there will probably be a few features in macOS 15 that will require the M3, or be significantly better on it.

Hence Apple's push into services (profits whether you upgrade or not) and visionOS (need to keep the hardware requirements up so users have a reason to upgrade).

What on earth? Did you even watch the event?
Apple is trolling, mocking, abusing, how can you not see this, $1500 for a toy laptop, in 2023 the m3 range are toys, for children to play games on, 8GB is really immature by Apple...8GB+256GB on a 2023 laptop is pathetic... Of course it will sell, but truly Tim is having a laugh.. Brutal... It is pathetic that Apple does this...

You can just say no, you didn’t watch it.

That said (post #69 above, where I like the M3), am I the only one that is perplexed by the memory configuration with the M3 Pro? Only a 4GB increase in maximum memory capacity?

Then, there is the odd memory specs for the M3 Pro where they have reduced the memory speeds from 200GB/s to just 150GB/s.

I wonder, is it possible that they have a glitch in the current M3 Pro that is forcing these odd choices? I guess the change in memory speed could be a cost-cutting effort, but why just 4GB of additional memory?

I was kind of hoping that we'd have 64GB on the M3 Pro so that I could get a new, M3 Pro Mac mini next year as my main desktop system. But, with only 36GB (apparently) I think I'll have to change my plans. But, that might not be a bad idea since a high-end Mac mini is about the same price as an entry-level Mac Studio and the Studio is a much more capable system.
I do not think there were glitches; just Apple positioning each level of product. Apple does a great job of placing products at levels that push us to jump to the next level. Your Mini example is a perfect example of that. Folks like you and me would like to use a desktop Mini, except 32 GB RAM would be limiting for 2025 and beyond. So we buy a Studio - which is probably where we should have been looking all along. ;~)
