Yeah I expect apple will launch a higher end mini featuring M1 Pro/Max chips considering the intel version is still present on their website, however, they could just have surplus stock that they want rid of too.Right. Entry cost has increased slightly, but you get a better monitor. Should be cheaper in the long run come upgrade time.
Hopefully M1Pro mini, for those who need ram more than higher core count.
I could just about manage with the 24" in terms of screen size I think, but I need something that has more than just 2tb capacity (MacBook Pros cater for that) and a non-pastel colour option. It's really not asking for a lot given how many variations they have for their other product line-ups. :/I totally agree, I was waiting for a new 27" iMac and would've preferred it. But if you carefully parse the language, I think the 27" iMac is dead:
"With the transition to M1, we've provided these users with two great desktops: iMac and Mac Mini....Yet there are some users who want even more...So that's what we're introducing today - something totally new that gives our users exactly what they need..."
The fact that he said they've already provided (past tense) two great desktops, combined with the reference to "iMac" (singular, with no reference to 24") seems to preclude having 2 iMacs.
And then, of course, "They join the rest of our incredible Mac lineup with Apple silicon, making our transition nearly complete, with just one more product to go - Mac Pro"
Unfortunately, I don't see how to interpret this as anything other than the end of the 27" iMac.
1. Starlight is officially the new lower end device colour rather than silver.
They boasted about iPad apps being used on the ARM Macs but it was otherwise strangely devoid of much else.
Is it possible they offer a downloadable app for OSX? Then why marry themselves to the App Store especially if they have content to sell? (Sorry if that's a Captain Obvious question)That boast rings hollow. More than half the apps I have attempted to find are not available. It seems like a lot of devs are flipping the "FU Mac Users" switch when uploading their apps to the store.
I suspect the larger enclosure is specifically designed for the Ultra, which is, you know, twice as much chip.I would like to see if they are going to run the studio at a higher clock speed than the MBPs or else it doesn’t make sense to have such a big enclosure.
yeah, so is a 27" iMac just a gone deal? have been holding out hope. feel like there's a middle position missing. the studio base is a bit light, the studio ultramax more expensive than an iMac - and that's still without getting a monitor. I feel like there's still room and a market for a 27" iMac, I'm hoping they'll address that this year still.I guess a lot of people on this site are very, very unhappy campers right about now. The frenzied talk about M2 really surprised me. There was no way they were releasing M2 Macs.
I assume that we'll get a Mac Pro and 27" iMac around WWDC (if they want to follow the 2 year release roadmap) and that will complete the transition. Then from October we'll start to see 2nd Gen of M machines.
Edit: I didn't realise that the 27" iMac has been taken off the table. Wow. Didn't see that coming.
Some do, but sometimes one feels like the iOS variant is superior.... but if they disable the iOS variant for Macs....Is it possible they offer a downloadable app for OSX? Then why marry themselves to the App Store especially if they have content to sell? (Sorry if that's a Captain Obvious question)
I have no idea. I thought it was still on the table then another poster confidently pointed out to me that it was off the table and pointed to the keynote. Something I didn't watch. But others seem to think one is still coming. So who knows. Apple said they had a 2 year road map and that is up by WWDC. But I wouldn't be surprised if we get one later this year.yeah, so is a 27" iMac just a gone deal? have been holding out hope. feel like there's a middle position missing. the studio base is a bit light, the studio ultramax more expensive than an iMac - and that's still without getting a monitor. And the need for a fresh color name was driven by...? And improves...?
I guess it gives Marketing a chance for some attaboys and back pats?
Apple would never let the environment get in the way of ever increasing mega-profits. They have slick advertising to deal with the environmental issue, which is far more cost effective and profit liability friendly.Thank you very much for the recap saves me from having to listen to the whole story.
Unfortunately I have been disenchanted with the Apple design philosophy for a long time. They should have been in the forefront designing hardware that iFixit would love, meaning devices that can be repaired, parts exchanged; in total designed for longer life. Much more environmentally friendly!
All the talk about innovation an leaving a better world then we found is too much talk and no real results, yet. Dell has come up with Project Luna a concept-laptop that really fits into a world were we are not depleting the earth. Circular economy and all that.
Yeah, that’s Widows; I know. I am into computers since 1985, starting out with an Amiga, a Mac the PC. (Was running a computer & video workshop, then) So I feel very much attached to macOS, brilliant stuff, but if Apple eventually will not cough up something really along the lines mentioned above. I’ll easily switch to the hell next door.
Same goes for the iPhone. Apple should make a Fairphone competitor.
So in this respect the whole present presentation is going the wrong way afaiac. Apple could do it while twiddling some thumbs, carrots in each ear, driving golf cart. They’re a Hokusai Great Wave of talented people, what’s keeping them from making Dell bite the dust? Why don’t they grok the serious situation we’re in? The young ones should batter those closed doors, where is their battering ram.
It’s their world.
Do the maths. Now you have to spend thousands of dollars more for effectively the same outcome.I'm willing to pony up for the Max studio, but the Ultra is beyond me.
If I had a use for the Studio Display, I'd think it was a good value. I just don't personally have a workspace where it makes sense.
One thing that has gone unspoken that I find interesting is that the high end iMac seems like it's being chucked out in favor of the combination of the Studio and Studio Display. So no more high end Pro all-in-one desktop.
So, Apple now sells a 27" display for not far off what they used to sell a 27" iMac for!
AUD600.00 for *upgrading* the display to be height adjustable!
AUD400.00 for nano-textured glass (what used to be sold as a matte display but now has a pseudo hi-tech name for perceived value-add).
What an absolute *bargain*!
Yet another blatant example of Apple milking it for everything they can!
The never ending trickle release of features (bells and whistles tech that always over promises and under-delivers/whelms) and the FMCG churn of tech, to maximise the already exorbitant profits, never ceases to amaze and depress me, in equal measure.

It was in their presentation.Start a list of important details Apple didn't tell us.
