iOS 15.4 is coming next week, with support for masks on FaceID. This week, Hawaii is the last state to drop mask mandates.

*sigh*

At least at this event there were some genuinely new and relatively awesome things.
Yes, all the things inside the Mac Studio were pretty awesome.

The nadir of Apple events for me was a few years back, I think with the iPhone 7 or 8, when you could basically swap out the numerical difference of the phone and you'd have the same presentation as the previous year, with all the overbearing hyperbole and superlatives. It was so predictable and bad. The products were still good overall but had all the "amazing magicalness" of a different shade of grey,.
Couldn't agree more. I kept my iPhone 6 over those bleak years. (Err… Come to think of it, I still own an iPhone 6S! 😬)

And other BS like “computational photography”…. really?
Oh I missed that one! Nice.

The kids and I played BS bingo watching Apple's last event. I wonder if we could organise a game here on MR for the next one? 🙂

The way I think Apple is looking at this is…

their desktop line up is likely the poorest selling Mac category for Apple, therefore they have decided to make an all in one for the general consumer which has a screen size right in the middle of the previous two sizes, this will suit the vast majority of the market and for those who need a larger screen, there is the studio display and the Mac mini.

Then for those who need more power or the prosumer market you have the Mac studio to couple with the studio display… this way people can customise their desktop how they see fit without Apple having to produce multiple all in one desktops to suit all areas of the market… as I don’t think there is a huge demand for an all in one in this particular market place, as I can imagine the discontinued iMac Pro probably didn’t sell too well and probably cost quite a bit to produce etc…

So overall you will have these options…

iMac - $1299
Mac mini plus studio display - $2298
Mac studio plus studio display - $3598

I should expect alongside the apple silicon Mac Pro we will likely also get a new Pro Display XDR which will cater for the highest end of the market.

No wonder why there is a chip shortage. The lithography on the Ultra chips must take some serious effort.

The announcement made it look like the extra space was used for cooling - fans, air flow, etc.

I would like to see if they are going to run the studio at a higher clock speed than the MBPs or else it doesn’t make sense to have such a big enclosure.

Really a downer event.

iPhone SE becoming more expensive instead of cheaper. Ridiculous, as it will end up even more expensive in my country.

No MacBook Air. Seriously, the M1 MacBook Air is getting old now. And countries like mine are still stuck without options for more than base 8GB of RAM.

No 27” iMac nor more powerful iMac.

M1 iPad Air, overpowered SoC for what though? The A15 would’ve been fine. At least Apple didn’t increase the price, I guess.

Mac Studio starting at $2000. Sure you get a great machine, but man, Apple is really pushing the prices.
I don’t usually do this, but this is the time that I miss Steve Jobs. Jobs tended to try to attract new user into the Apple ecosystem by not only catering to the high end, but also on the lower end (original Mac mini for $499, iPod shuffle, trickling down previously flagship iPhone into lower prices year by year, etc). The current Apple is pushing more towards the sky instead, extracting more money from the fans and alienating non-Apple users with out of this world pricing. Instead of the computer for us mere mortals, Apple is becoming more of computer for the top 0.1%.
You know, I remember a time people were complaining that Apple was just focused on the instragram masses and forgot the pros.

Based on your comments, it seems sentiments have flipped the other way. This is currently the most pro focused that Apple has been for quite a while.

That would be an INSANELY bad decision and utterly illogical. Many, MANY customers (such as myself) want/need an iMac that i) has a larger display that the M1 24" iMac ii) is more powerful/has more ports/has greater storage capacity iii) is in more neutral colours (ie, black/grey) and iv) is at a REASONABLE price (ie $2000-3000). The new studio system is no replacement whatsoever, as at it's MINIMUM we're talking about over $3500 for the display and computer.
I totally agree, I was waiting for a new 27" iMac and would've preferred it. But if you carefully parse the language, I think the 27" iMac is dead:
"With the transition to M1, we've provided these users with two great desktops: iMac and Mac Mini....Yet there are some users who want even more...So that's what we're introducing today - something totally new that gives our users exactly what they need..."

The fact that he said they've already provided (past tense) two great desktops, combined with the reference to "iMac" (singular, with no reference to 24") seems to preclude having 2 iMacs.

And then, of course, "They join the rest of our incredible Mac lineup with Apple silicon, making our transition nearly complete, with just one more product to go - Mac Pro"

Unfortunately, I don't see how to interpret this as anything other than the end of the 27" iMac.

Now we need a really low entry level M1 Mini on a Stick for $99.

It’s a shame we just can’t take our latest and greatest iPhone and plug it into a monitor and keyboard and drive and dual boot up to Monterey and we have a fully working computer. It’s powerful enough now to do that now.

I guess it's an unmatched expectations. If this were WWDC, I probably wouldn't be as disappointed. But I guess you're right, this is focused on the Pros, a prelude to the Mac Pro. The SE is just a filler. I guess we'll be waiting till the last quarter of the year for more consumer focused launches.

I'm definitely staying on my Intel Mac Pro and MacBook pro for a while longer, but the new display is very interesting. Might be the time to switch from dual 24 4k to this bad boy some time soon.

I suspect the Mini is gonna shrink. The M2 release is probably going to be all about smaller machines (an Air with no bezels and a Mini that’s really mini).

I definitely want this monitor when I replace my iMac but for web programming the Studio is overkill. I might get an entry level one anyway, lol.

I laughed out loud when they announced the m1-ultra gpu as "3.4 times faster" than the "most popular" imac gpu 5700xt and "over 3 times faster" than the "most popular" macpro gpu the 5700w, while the chart in the back showed 3.4x faster in both cases.

Pretty weak presentation yesterday, riddled with cheesy comparisons like that. Especially the presentation of the SE was quite cringeworthy with it's changing comparisons to the se2 or 8 or the occasional vague references to "older phones", when even the 8 and SE2 were too similar for comparision. You could really feel the pain in her eyes having to hype this overpriced 6th iteration of the iphone 6 design. As if she was thinking "Great, it's international women's day, and now I have to bite the bullet. Thank you, Tim".

they dont. not unless mac pro chip is something else entirely, and i think the mac pro market is not large enough to justify totally custom chip (just so you understand, most xeon CPUs use same die as their server counterparts - and thats massive market in comparison to pro market)

only thing coming to mind is using newer memory chips when they become available that would double their capacity. so quad m1max would have 256 gb at current chip size, and 512 gb when capacity doubles.
That makes sense. So Apple is waiting for new RAM chips. But if 2x M1 Max = M1 Ultra and can handle 128GB of RAM, how the heck do they reach 1.5TB? Quadruple M1 Max is not enough.

Yeah 100% the 27” iMac is dead and so is the any larger iMac for that matter… I can guarantee that come WWDC or later we will see a new Pro Display XDR launched alongside the Mac Pro which is the main driving force for leaving 120hz and miniLED out of the studio display.

I can imagine this is a costing decision by Apple… why create several different iMacs for all different markets when you can quite simply create 3 towers (Mac mini, Mac studio, Mac Pro) and 2 displays (Studio Display, Pro Display XDR) which can be customised to suit pretty much everyone in the marketplace for a desktop.

Because there will be people who need the most performance possible but don’t necessarily need or want miniLED or 120hz, on the flip side there will be people who need the best display possible but are quite happy with M1, doing it this way keeps everyone happy including Apple, as I can imagine a display and a Mac mini/studio/pro is likely cheaper to produce than a full blown all in one.

Really like the the Mac Studio, and I'm glad Apple are bringing back their own monitors. As a proud owner of the 2011 Thunderbolt Display, which is still rocking today, it is great to see a more 'affordable' monitor come back. I was hoping it was going to be 30-32" though.

This keynote was so weird, most of the presenters (including Tim) felt like robots in the way they talked.

Halfway through I actually expected them to have a "one more thing" at the end with: "Nothing you just saw and heard was real. The facts and products are real, but the people were fully synthetic, visuals and audio. And that's what you can expect with the Apple glasses and mobileMe, your virtual avatar that's almost as real as you are. We're so thrilled and excited and can't wait to get this groundbreaking technology into your hands."

Right. Entry cost has increased slightly, but you get a better monitor. Should be cheaper in the long run come upgrade time.
Hopefully M1Pro mini, for those who need ram more than higher core count.

I’ve been watching these keynotes since OSX Tiger. I think I’m getting bored of them.

Also, at this point I really just want a beefcake of an OS for iPad.

Today's "Peek Performance" event was more exciting than we initially thought it would be, with Apple debuting a new Mac Studio machine and Studio Display alongside a 5G version of the iPhone SE with A15 chip and an M1 iPad Air with 5G chip.

It took Apple an hour to go over all of today's announcements, but we've summarized all of the new product details in a quick seven minute video. Below, we've also rounded up all of our coverage today so you don't miss anything.

I notice this morning that ALL 27 inch iMacs have been removed from the Apple Store - only on the refurbs. So now there are no 27 inch iMacs available and a giant gap between the 24 inch (M1) iMacs and thee base Mac Studio + Monitor. Apple has pulled some bone headed mistakes - I think this is one of them.

Look into shopping OUTIDE of exclusively Apple. You can pair a base configuration Studio (which, until yesterday, had the "most powerful chip ever created", "best of everything", "Intel is trash/junk", "eating its dust", etc) for $1999. 27" or larger monitors with other brand mark "stickers" or plastic brand glued to them can be had for a fraction of the cost of this ONE monitor from Apple.

Are they as good in every way as this monitor? If much cheaper, very likely NO. However, spend about 50%-75% of this Apple price and you can get a pretty nice monitor... with an adjustable stand... and a pack of cleaning cloths. 😉 Did you desire something bigger than 27"? There's plenty out there that are bigger. "But I've been convinced I need I high DPI." Those are available from others too. "What I'd really like is an ultra-wide." Those are abundantly available too (and may never come from Apple).

On the other hand, if the only tech we can imagine buying must come from only a single seller, that seller can charge ANY price and, while we may whine about greed, if they are the only seller for us, we ultimately come around and buy (or quit tech entirely).

Be a consumer: shop around. It's your right. Vote with your dollars.

For the price of a modestly-upgraded iMac, it will be easier to pair a Mac Studio M1 MAX and a very nice monitor NOT branded Apple. If we really, really need our monitor to seem like it came from Apple, cover the other brand's sticker with an Apple sticker. Nobody else will probably notice or care.

I speak from experience. My long-term iMac finally conked. My big, beautiful Apple screen in it was still perfectly fine but the tech guts quit. Instead of setting up another round of "throwing baby out with the bathwater" by buying another "all in one," I decided that my next Mac would separate Mac from screen. While I was only hoping for a Mac Mini BTO with M1 MAX yesterday, Studio will certainly work. My monitor desire was greater than 27" anyway but not such that I wanted to pay $6K for Apples other monitor. So the most visible part of my new Mac setup will have a different company's brand on the part viewed most. Do I care? Nope. Am I worried that others will think my whole computer setup is not Apple? Nope.

Had Apple NOT rolled out a "cheaper🤪" monitor yesterday, Studio buyers would be weighing $6K singular option choice from Apple vs. countless other possibilities- nearly all of which would cost less to much less. Studios would be being paired with all sizes and types of monitors NOT branded Apple. That same option is still available to ALL of us.

OPTION B/C: if Studio at $1999 is "too expensive," wait about 5-6 months and it will hit the refurb store for about 15% off, at about $1700. Then pair it with someone else's monitor as the new iMac.

OPTION C/D: Since Mini Intel survived the cut yesterday, there must still be a Mini Pro (maybe Max) coming soon. Stand by, wait for that, and pair that with someone else's monitor as a new iMac. There's a fair chance that that pairing could end up costing less than a comparable iMac 27"

In any of these options, when the tech guts die (or are obsoleted by macOS upgrades we can't live without in a few years), the monitor will likely be able to move on to the next generation Mac (and maybe the one after that too)... instead of having to be "wasted" before its time, as is necessary with iMac monitors.

As a long-term iMac owner, I'm sorry to see iMac "bigger" go... but was indifferent to it heading into this event. iMac has historically seemed like a better buy going in but it is a terrible waste at the end when one part takes out the WHOLE system. On the death of an intel iMac in my case, I lost my best macOS computer AND my best Windows computer PLUS my best monitor for both in ONE hardware failure. No more. Studio will be new Mac, Mini PC will be new bootcamp and one monitor able to link to both will be the new screen.

If iMac Pro is ever resurrected, if me, I'd only be interested if Apple made it so the computing guts could be swapped when they are too old or die, reusing the same great monitor with new replacement guts. I'll not ever have interest again in "locking in" to a monitor that will clearly have much longer legs than the computing guts initially sold with it... and no way to otherwise use that monitor when the stock guts conk.
