Was hoping/waiting for an iMac. I believe it will be updated at the same time with the Mac Pro, iMac Pro. Updating it now with i9 will cannibalize too much?

I agree. I NEED to purchase a 27" i7 iMac in November (as a gift) and I've now got to find either a 1.5 year old iMac at a good discount or hold my breath and pray for an iMac refresh before 11/30. I will be absolutely livid if I buy a 2017 iMac in late November and new ones come out (with better i7 CPUs) 30-60 days later unless I save $500.

I really was hoping for a Mini...but since the regular iPad is $329 now while the ancient Mini is still $399, I wasn't sure what Apple would do for Mini pricing. Would they drop it to $329 which was 2012 pricing or still gouge us? If the Mini has the same or better CPU as the 2018 iPad AND is cheaper than the 2018 iPad, I would buy it. Otherwise I would buy the regular iPad. I'm running some apps that max out the CPU so I'm looking for best price/performance but also not spending more than $400.

Given that tomorrow is Nov 1 and Apple's big parade was yesterday, I don't see new iMacs or Minis coming until next year because they can just sell off all the old inventory and do a refresh in March when people pay off their holiday spending.
i had a series of imacs for a decade, bu i switched back to pc a month ago and couldn't be happier. i loved my old imacs - like i loved them. they had nice screens, good specs, and reasonably priced. but the biggest plus was that they were repairable/upgradeable. i was able to quadruple my RAM when prices dropped. i replaced my broken HDD and added an SSD to the optical bay. i replaced my GPU after it deballed (twice), along with other fixes. you simply cannot do any of that anymore, so you are totally screwed and at the mercy of apple when it breaks (it will break).

with that said, if you love the OS to the point where you're willing to spend 1,000's of dollars more for it then i can't stop you. but if you need a new rig you might want to give PCs (especially gaming ones) another look.

I think all of the people who like the SE should just try out XR for 14 days before you do your rant again! I move from a SE to the XR Max and looking back, the SE craving was so silly now! Totally ridiculous idea still want a 4” iPhone dating back to 2011.

There are people such as myself who liked that the SE provided a lower cost way to stay with Apple. We don't stare at our phones ten hours a day so we're fine with a smaller screen. We don't care about bezel size or get hung up on notches. We're fine with Touch ID and find Face ID to be unnecessary. And the camera doesn't have to be the absolute best one available.

Maybe it's just me, but I get the feeling that Apple has all but abandoned AirPower.
I worry that's the case as well. It definitely seemed like a companion product that tied together many of their other products. Almost as if owning an airpower charging pad would make you want to purchase all 3 of the compatible products. I was all in on it.

It’s time for another Steve Jobs to come and streamline again the product line and prices.

Current line is a total mess, and Mac Mini, the most affordable Mac which was created to attract new users, starting at $799 is a joke.

I hope Scott Forstall will return one day.

What I find amusing is how the new maxed out mini will total $4,200! And that is still with on board graphics. geeze..

People always say this and I see no real evidence whatsoever that that thought has ever entered into the process. They build what sells regardless.

Seemed clear that these things weren't going to happen today or at very least it was incredibly unlikely.

That's what the XR is. It replaced the SE. While there's a remote possibility they'd release one next year (not a chance in hell they'd announce one so close to the XR release and take the wind out of those sales), at this point it's almost certainly replaced the SE completely for good.

Yeah it was simply too many things unless the event would last 4 hours. I had to chuckle to myself when people started saying that Apple somehow really managed to double down on secrecy. if there is no leak or rumor there simply is no product.

I'm still kind of disappointed in the lack of update for the iMac. I wanted to buy that this year, hoping for an 9th gen i9 designed around all NVME.
An iMac update will come, but there’s zero chance of NVMe. So far there are only three high end ninth generation desktop CPUs available, and most of the iMacs Apple sells are low to mid-range. My guess is they’re waiting for more ninth gen parts. Maybe the next refresh will be the new design everyone seems to want.

It's cool that they over charge for a substandard, restricted brick? Ooookay.

Seriously, less than 1% of Minis will be sold with a maxed out configuration. The RAM is user upgradeable.

The Air is great. Going to buy to replace my wife's 2010 MacBook Pro. The Mini with 8gb and 512gb of storage is reasonably priced, I'm probably going to buy as the replacement for my dead iMac. It is going to be the cheapest Mac I've ever bought.
Remember the adage: "You get what you pay for."

It's funny the rMB didn't get an Amber Lake chip update at the very least considering they slapped one in the new MBA, but what's even weirder is the messed up lineup of Macbooks now: the rMB with last year's chip, one lousy USB-C port and less power didn't get a price cut, it's more expensive than the new 13-inch MBA with better everything.

No new iMacs, but we don't have any new midrange GPUs out to put in them, the update can wait.

No news concerning the modular Mac Pro that's been promised for 2016 2017 2018 now 2019?

Considering they are still selling the 2013 trash can model at full price, I think there's a pissing contest going on at Apple to see how long they can keep this joke going.

Not impressed.
The Air is only cheaper because it has half the storage of the rMB. rMB is $100 cheaper ($1,299) than the new Air ($1,399) when the Air is configured with the same 256GB SSD.

After updating the 2015 model in 2016 and 2017, it appears they’re skipping Amber Lake this year and instead waiting for Cannon Lake next year. It’s a low volume product and doesn’t need to take every Intel update. It will get TouchID when it’s refreshed. I say when because I don’t think it’ll be canceled; I think there’s a place in the lineup for a 2 lb. ultraportable with decent performance.

As you say, iMac is waiting until more ninth generation chips are available in addition to the three higher-end ones that were released a few weeks ago.

The Mac Pro was never promised for 2016, 2017 or 2018. In 2017 they said “not this year” and earlier this year they announced it wouldn’t arrive until 2019.

Also, the Mac Pro isn’t still being sold at full price. There were a variety of discounts implemented a year and a half ago (April 2017), including the $3,999 model dropping to $2,999 and the top config discounted from $9,599 to $6,999.

Was the Mac Pro badly mis-handled from a product management standpoint? Did it take too long before Apple realized it needed a fundamental re-design? Is it taking longer than anyone would like to deliver the update? Yes, yes and yes—without a doubt. But at least it’s coming, along with a return of Apple branded professional monitors, next year.

They'll keep dragging their feet on giving up on fusion drives. People want everything on internal storage, and want to have ridiculous amounts of photo and video.

If they are going to stick with fusion drives, it's possible that the iMac is blocked on a T3 chip. All the T2 devices today are pure flash storage. With the A12, A12X and S4 chips they may have had to set priorities.

The T2 at least has its own custom storage controller, so it likely won't be some generic swappable NVMe setup for internal flash storage.

I was hopeful too. Our team just ordered PC's. We're a PC motion graphics team now. Good-bye Apple. :(

There was pretty much zero chance that Apple would release a Mac Pro, since they already announced (a year and a half ago) it was coming in 2019.

Look at AirPower - occasionally, Apple will give a preview of products to come, but they prefer to announce them when they are ready. Now that AirPower is late, they aren't going to say a word about it until it is in stores.

Why does a company with all of Apple's money take years to design a new computer? Are they obsessing over how thin it will be? how rounded the corners will be? what colors to make? It's obviously not a high priority for them.

If you ask them, they’ll say they’re taking the time to get it right. To that end, they’ve put together actual in-house teams of creative pros. You can read quite a bit about it here:

https://techcrunch.com/2018/04/05/apples-2019-imac-pro-will-be-shaped-by-workflows/

Money doesn’t solve every problem, and neither does throwing engineers at it. I try to be realistic; this is their process. It is what it is, as they say, and it simply won’t be ready until next year :(

They have a different process and goals than the rest of the industry, which also includes custom parts like the T2 chips and aligning support for new processors and video cards with the OS-level support they are also writing. It's not quite "throw parts in a beige case and ship it".

And if it had a 4TB option it would have maxed out at $6,200. It’s all about the upgrades.

The $799 entry level model is priced about the same as the previous mini for that config. What Apple did was get rid of the low end options like 4GB, HDD, Fusion drives, slow dual-core 1.4GHz 15W CPU that occupied the $499-799 space. Higher base specs, higher base cost.

Current line up is not a mess at all. It’s intentional. They’ve purposefully created confusing product names. It gives people choice and inevitably they will pick the better model (Pro) for only a slightly higher price.

I think they will be making more profit than ever with cheaper costs and a baffling product range. The average consumer just walks into the store and buys what they like the look of. The wide choice but tight price range gives Apple absolute power.

Damn it, wanted to add Chinese Democracy, then remembered that it acually came out 10 years ago

It wasn’t that bad actually. I still love “Better.” The solo at the end is pure class.

And here I am waiting for - a new iPad mini and updated MacBooks (need a simple laptop in the office, have the MacBookPro in my travel backpack for conferences abroad etc.)
