Other manufacturers can get away with using them because they aren't shipping anything like the sort of volumes that Apple does (i.e. millions of units per month) and/or can slap in a huge battery to compensate for the power drain.

You might be right but I just know critics are going to complain if Apple doesn't release a 4G iPhone for the rest of the world, like they did with the iPad.

Also how come they work in the US/Canada but changing the frequency for the rest of the world would cause battery and production problems?

Yes but how hard is it for Apple (the worlds most valuable company) to make an iPhone (or iPad) that works with our 4G network in Australia when others have had them on the marker here for much of 2012.

I know - that is the problem I work my head around as to why Apple didn't support the 1800Mhz band. I am just hoping that the rumour is true and Telstra is going to buy Telecom NZ resulting in economies of scale to push down the handset unit price.

Am on orange, so bring it on! Love it when vodafone start crying foul

I'm with O2, but have no contract and can walk when I wish. If O2 do not take up the service, and assuming the new phone is LTE capable, I may be looking at Orange who I used to be with years ago. Trouble is, no carriers really like us people who buy our phones direct...They would far prefer to lock you into an expensive contract..Out of the two though, Orange were always pretty good when I was with them..Maybe September will be time for a switch.

Same. They need to change their name to Four and jump on the 4G rollout!

or 34 hahah

I've done some research and 3 have purchased two 15mhz ranges of the 1800mhz so they can bust out 4G as early as 11th sept as well just like EE but ofcom need to approve of the the split which maybe prolong it.

I expect them to definately have 4G by end of 2012 as they're main selling point is that they're the fastest iPhone network which they wouldn't be if they do not have 4G and because I recently joined simply because of the speed; I'll leave simply because of speed as well as I get sim only monthly contracts. :)

Obviously not enough research!

Three can't touch their bits of the spectrum until 2013!

The European Commission required Everything Everywhere to get shot of the spectrum as a condition of the merger that created it. When Orange and T-Mobile eloped to form EE, the mammoth phone network was left holding almost half the UK mobile radio spectrum. So EE offered to sell off two 15MHz-wide blocks before the 4G mega auction, which it has now done, but it won't let Three take possession until the last possible moment required by the EC: September 2013 for two 10MHz blocks, and September 2015 for the rest.

Unfortunately you're kidding yourself. You definitely won't be seeing 4G this year with Three, and barely any movement even late next year. Not even EE will be offering a wide 4G service this year. I don't expect it to take off with other carriers with significant momentum until 2014/2015

its the radio chip. Qualcomm didn't have a single LTE/CDMA/HSPA+ radio chip and apple does not play the game of different specs for different carriers.

this year qualcomm should have a new radio chip that will work on every tech around the world

impossible

i keep reading how the europeans are so far ahead of us americans in wireless tech

I was referring to an article of May 31 , 2011 in the International Business times about an Apple World Phone.

It mentions Qualcomm chips and a simless solution, i.e. a world phone.

Unfortunately not happening (yet)

clearly i didnt see that on the damn small 3.5" screen :D

lets pray for a miracle and hope orange and t mobile improve their service and then i might jump ship to them.

T-Mobile is also the only UK provider that STILL offers unlimited data (AFAIK). O2 and Vodaphone stopped it long ago.

Tesco runs on o2 meaning o2 still kindov offers Unlimited data.

as does GiffGaff (runs on o2 also) :D

But yeah the original o2 stopped it last year, when simplicity changed
