I can’t wait to color grade my kid blowing out their birthday candles. /s

You think Apple will add color grading presets in the Photos app based on popular movies to make this at least somewhat useful for normies that like buying fancy phones (95% or more of us)? I’m not a videographer or cinematographer but know some stuff since I’m a photographer and have used these functions sometimes in my cameras. Does this shoot a flat profile or can you select what log format to use? Or does Apple have their own profile?

Kinda weird that you can do 4K30 but not 1080p60 or 120. Shouldn’t that be less data or the same for 120 since 4K is 4x1080p? Seems logical but might have some technical reason with the way the sensor outputs data? Like I still don’t understand how the slow motion video hasn’t gotten any faster over many years now. Shouldn’t we be able to record 1080p480 or 4K120 by now? I think that would be great. 480fps might be dark in some situations but it’s not crazy, especially with the new brighter lenses and larger sensors.

Apparently the automatic switching can be annoying when you try to frame a shot, are relatively close and all of a sudden the image jumps and your phone decides which lens and sensor it is shooting with. Your framing changes because of the parallax and the changed coverage angle and you have to try frame the and focus the shot again. Rinse and repeat .... So, for serious photographer who want to be in control as much as possible, the toggle is a boon.
As per Max Tech we can just cover the ultra wide lens by a finger and the iPhone will switch to the wide lens again lol

Apple makes it clear and obvious ProRes 4K for 128GB devices is a marketing limitation rather than technical.

ProRes 4K = 6GB/min = 100MB/sec

Even iPhone 7 can write at 350MB/sec. With 128GB, ProRes 4K can store at least 15 minutes of video, but Apple has decided 128GB users shouldn't use this.

curious why would you use Prores on a 128gb phone? Its a gimped setup. I would rather go minimum 512GB if I was going to start using an iphone as a B-roll camera or for ENG on the run use.

Am I missing something with the macro mode toggle? Almost everyone wanted a button to switch to back to the wife when the photo was worse for Apple switching to macro mode.
Now If you toggle “auto macro” off, it makes taking macros impossible because manually switching to the ultra wide makes the images **much** darker than Apple’s current auto macro mode.
Somehow my auto correct always thinks that I’m trying to type wife lens instead of wide lens

Using up your storage space like that is not realistic.

So the threshold between a real cinematographer and a fake one is 128GB vs. 256GB?

If you only need to capture 15 minutes of ProRes 4K for an advertisement, you're fake?

How about a simple warning in the app: "You're out of free space."
Grasping at straws…

If an iPhone could be made lighter and thinner by shrinking the size of the battery and reducing its runtime to 15 mins would you still want to buy it even if you’d have to charge it all day?

It’s just not a realistic experience.

Apple might be gearing up to offer usb-c after all. Next year they can say, “we truly innovated with iPhone 14. Our new innovations now allow you to export pro res video at up 20 times faster than iPhone 13” (10 gbps vs 480 mbps).

I really don't understand why Apple chose to use a Settings toggle for the macro. To me the more intuitive thing would have been to put a flower symbol on the viewfinder that you would press when you wanted a macro shot. As it stands, the iOS Settings are not intuitive in how they are organized, which makes t hard to find what you need to change at times. It is a big mess as far as I am concerned and adding more to it does not help.

About uploading to iCloud? Absolutely. There's no reason anyone should be trying to upload ProRes clips to the cloud. Cloud uploads already tend to be slow even on fast Internet connections.

As for USB though... It's not that bad. 40MB/s means about 25 seconds per gig. Certainly faster than anything you're going to get trying to go through iCloud. If you're shooting ProRes you're going to spend a lot more time editing than transferring your video.
Option:a gigastone iphone to microsd card - and with external microsd card reader upload to Mac

Actually, sending files to a nearby Mac over 802.11ax WiFi could be fast enough. And maybe combined with the caching service (to iCloud) it could be even better. Maybe a Shortcuts workflow could move finished recordings directly to a Mac/storage device automatically?

Apple today released the third beta of iOS 15.1 to developers for testing purposes, and the update introduces some new camera features for iPhone 13 Pro users.

ProRes Video

Today's beta adds support for ProRes video capture with the standard iPhone camera app. It can be toggled on by opening up the Settings app and selecting the "Camera" section. From there, tap on "Formats" and toggle on "Apple ProRes."

ProRes capture is limited to 30fps at 1080p on devices with only 128GB of storage, but higher capacity devices can record in 4K. Apple says that a one-minute 10-bit HDR ProRes video takes up 1.7GB in HD mode.

Macro Toggle

To take macro shots, the iPhone 13 Pro models swap over to the Ultra Wide lens when the iPhone's camera gets close to an object, which some people do not like because it can be difficult to get a shot with the camera constantly swapping back and forth.

iOS 15.1 beta 3 adds a toggle to turn off Auto Macro, which will prevent the Camera app from automatically switching to the Ultra Wide camera for macro photos and videos.

The feature can be enabled in the Camera section of the Settings app by scrolling down and toggling off the "Auto Macro" option.

Does anyone know if European framerate 25 also is possible?
thanky you..

Are you using the 13 pro or this what you heard ?

I own one yes and have been using it since launch day. It is amazingly smooth and I was wowed for the first hour or so, but then I soon ran into weird animation issues like when pulling to refresh in the App Store for example; it bounces then kinda jumps and hangs. It never did that on my previous iPhone on iOS 14. When opening a new tab in Safari the animation is wonky and not smooth at all. Swiping horizontally like on the home bar when switching between apps for example isn’t so smooth either, there is visual stutter there and other instances when swiping around the OS.

To those who reacted with the laugh and disagree reaction to my initial comment; Apple themselves have stated it’s a core animation issue or whatever, so I’m hoping they fix it sooner rather than later. The fact that they knew about this but shipped it anyway is completely sloppy and amateur from a company who used to pride themselves on a premium experience. It’s a 1k phone and it’s Apple. There should be zero issues when just swiping around.

I have the same experience on my 13 Pro, and I completely agree.

UiScrollview is lovely. The rest not so much. Bizarre they released it like this.
I thought 15.0.1 would sort it. Yet here we are in beta 3 of 15.1 and it’s still an issue.

I’m starting to think it’s gonna stay this way.

Dammit, that is the wrong way, or only half assed way to fix macro! We still want the macro we just to control when comes on and off from the camera app, screwing around with menus. :p

They really should’ve held off adding ProRes until we got a proper USB-C port.
No, they will add 60Ghz proprietary short range wireless transfer found on Apple Watch to enable “wireless file transfer” rather than caving in and adding USB-C port, even if EU mandate it. Worst case scenario, they leave EU market and call it a day.

Im surprised Apple didn’t put Macro mode on the camera itself. We have Video, Photo, Slo-Mo, Pano etc. Why not Macro in there as well?
Because there is no special macro mode to enable, you just switch to 0.5x camera and bring it very close to a subject.
