Not sure I agree about the '50s, but iOS does have a near-ludicrous tome of lists and options in Settings.

My guess is that Apple will only scan the photos, documents, etc. that it hosts on their servers(including ones they have control over but don’t own) because just the act of hosting these images is criminal and also actionable in civil law.

By that logic, I couldn't rent a place for raping girls just because they need to "search" every now and then to be sure. Bollocks.
