Yay. The most useful and anticipated feature in iOS 17 is still half baked and won't be worth using when Live Voicemail still replaces your message with a boilerplate message meaning you have to choose between the feature and actually having your own recording. FAIL.
No sir, you can use a recorded greeting and still use the feature. It worked in beta 4, and will continue to work in beta 5. That’s just the new default greeting, preventing people from just waiting on the line.

Apple today released the fifth beta of the upcoming iOS 17 update to developers for testing purposes, and the Cupertino company continues to make small tweaks and refinements to the operating system.

There aren't many changes because we're getting late into the beta testing process, but there are a few updates worth highlighting.

App Store

For App Store downloads, Apple is no longer using all caps for the download buttons. Get, Open, Update, and other App Store button labels are now in title case rather than all caps as they were previously.

Live Voicemail

Apple has changed the message prompt for Live Voicemail to make it less confusing for people who call you. The prior default voicemail message had wording that said "the person you're calling may pick up," which caused some callers to hold on the line rather than leaving a voicemail.

Here's what it says now:

Mood Tracking

Apple is continuing to refine the look of the mood logging feature in the Health app, and there is a new graphic when tapping into the mood tracking interface. There have also been small tweaks to the different graphic options for some of the colors and symbols used to denote each mood.

Locked Private Browsing

There is a new Safari splash screen for private browsing, which lets you turn on the locked private browsing feature. This pops up when you open up a private browser window for the first time after installing iOS 17, and it gives you an option to enable the setting.

Turning on Locked Private Browsing locks the browser when you leave Safari or lock your phone, and accessing the private browser then requires authentication with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. This feature had been on by default in earlier betas, but it looks like it might be a setting that is opt in when iOS 17 releases.

Locate Siri Remote

When you open the Remote app in the Control Center, there is a new popup that lets you know about the feature that is meant to let you track an Apple TV Siri Remote using your iPhone.

Though there is a tooltip for this feature, it does not yet appear to be functional.

Shortcuts

The icons that Apple uses for Safari in the Shortcuts app have been refined to make it more obvious what each action does. Apple previously used a Safari icon for everything, but now options like Search Web, Open URL, and Filter Articles have more specific icons.

Messages Check In

Apple has refined the look of the Messages Check In example screen, which is presented so you can see the difference between sharing limited data and sharing full data. This Settings screen now shows the battery charge and iPhone unlocking information that is sent alongside location.

Apple has also updated the wording to make it clear that information is only shared if Check Ins aren't responded to when prompted.

Absolutely. It works well 👍 and although I use a “Custom” greeting, the new default greeting makes more sense.
So, no “FAIL”…. Roland.g

That would be great. Image processing is horrible.
No image processing on a CCD that small would be horrible. Download an app that allows you to capture unprocessed RAW and you’ll see why every image from cellphones today has some fairly massive amount of processing on it.

I have been using the new Personal Voice feature in IOS17 Public Beta 2 and, unfortunately, have found the recording process to be so buggy that it is unusable. The Apple computer I'm working on is an 11" iPad Pro, 3rd generation. I've seen no mention of fixing these bugs in the press I've seen on the iOS17 Developer Beta 5.

Been working this way for years. Makes multitasking massively easier. At work I keep all my messaging stuff (Slack, email) on one desktop. Calendar and to-do app stuff on another. And then I'll just put all the windows and apps related to a specific thing I'm working on all on one desktop. There are a bunch of ways to switch between spaces, but generally I just command-tab to the app I want to get to, and the Finder quickly switches to that space.
But this thread is about iOS?

So this is still happening to me. As you can see the first image was created in IOS 16 and isnt blurred out at all. this is currently zoomed out its regular size. As you can see no Blur at all. But when you get into IOS 17 and zoom out to the regular size of the wallpaper for the lock screen it becomes blurry. The blur only goes away if you zoom closer to it. I thought by now with Beta 5 out. They would have fixed it. Finally sent feedback and hopefully this get fixed.

Live Voicemail should give an option to include your name. Obviously, some people might not want to reveal their name, so they are catering to the most privacy centric, but I think a lot of the issues with live voicemail are that you don't even know if you have the correct number in some cases, and it asks you to record a voicemail.

This prompt is better, but I don't think they are quite there just yet.

App Store enhancements. OK.

Can I save apps or games to my favourites list?
Does it let me sort apps within category by date added? Or by price? Or by rating?
Why can't I see the newest apps within the category?

Pretty basic stuff for any online store.

Yet, App Store does not have it despite generating billions of dollars...

Yes, it is blurry, on the other side, it is much more readable now.. so.. i would love to include more fonts to choose from, but that is just me..

It seems you can adjust the default level of processing. After picking one, you can manually adjust it further.
In my experience those just change the flavor of processing it does, but don't get you anywhere closer to a neutral photo. The HDR gets way out of hand sometimes. I basically stopped trying to take pictures of people in "golden hour" sunset lighting because the processing gets so aggressive people just look unnatural. My only recourse is to pull out an app that lets you shoot RAW, and then process that manually later. Or just pull out my "real" camera which puts out JPEGs that come much closer to what I see with the naked eye.

Well, it's a beta so that's not unexpected.

What is unexpected is that in finished versions of iOS we have somehow not seen integration of this hardware feature. People were rightly kvetching about the lack of Find My support when the Siri remote first came out, so it's just plain weird they didn't address it with an iOS update a couple years ago. It's a marketable feature so they've definitely left money on the table by not selling against it. I guess when you're as big as Apple you can do dumb things like that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Similar weirdness to how the HomePod Mini had temperature and humidity sensors installed day 1, but only recently has there been software support exposing them to the user.
I hear you, but look on the bright side — Apple made bank selling AirTags which got installed onto Siri remotes! :D
