Everything New in iOS 18.4 Beta 1

Works for me in Germany with my iPhone 16 pro set to Germany and German language.
So far tested the writing tools (in German), Image Playground, Visual intelligence and "Bereinigen" in Photos. I activated message prios, not sure if it works though...
Siri animation is nice, but I think Siri is not more "intelligent" than before! ;-) But I think this will come with 18.5.

Battery life seems to be also quite good.

Not sure why some people have problems with German language. You sure everything AI related is downloaded already?

Can anyone confirm that disabling AI still uses additional space? I’m on a 14 Pro and I don’t need the AI nonsense that isn’t even supported on my phone.

Two days ago I turned it off. Yesterday it was still using 5+ GB. I think maybe it requires a restart to delete it? 🤔
 
Apple might finally rectify the bug where the phone gets stuck at the iCloud login screen during the setup process or when transferring data from an old phone.
 
I wonder when they will rollout the Siri contextual awareness in beta? We will be quickly approaching WWDC in 3 months. At this point it just seems so odd to show off all these features that aren’t going to be available anytime soon to users. Especially when Apple heavily promoted it as such and we have yet to have any real ground breaking Apple Intelligence features.

Should do something about safari loading pages on WiFi, iOS 18 is the culprit here, did not have this issue before, sometimes blank pages for 10-20 seconds to then show up instantly, it also happens on cellular but a lot less frequently.

FWIW I experience delays of one or two seconds when I first begin browsing. I've always attributed this to Private Relay. I switched it off just now and those little delays seem to have disappeared... 🤷‍♂️

It’s off, I just switched off all content blockers, that seems to make it better but strangely I do not have active content blockers on my phone, I do use pi-hole externally though.

Where were you when you first created your Apple ID?
I know that Apple Vision Pro could only be used with US Apple Accounts and I thought AI was only to be available in Germany in April.

I mean, these kinds of bugs are actually nothing new, at least to me, but at least this is happing in a beta, the only place it should happen. Did you maybe force reset your phone? That might fix this inconsistency for you.

April here means when 18.4 is officially released after beta cycle I assume.

Well my system language is set to English. Maybe Siri language needs to match in order for Apple Intelligence to function. The error message simply states that AI doesn't work with Siri set to German.

As soon as I set it to English, is stated that it downloads, but without any indication of progress. After a while it notified me that it was ready to use, and sure enough the Playground app was there and Genmoji is available. Mail summaries don't seem to work for me though. I'd hope we can download models in multiple languages for things like summaries though, as I receive mail in both English and German languages. Also, when trying Playground again a couple of hours later, it suddenly said it was still downloading something. A few minutes later it worked again.

On my M2 iPad Pro I activated Apple Intelligence and it showed the same download message without progress indicator, apparently also downloaded around 6 GB but it didn't show the completion notification (and it also didn't work). I left it connected to a charger to no avail. When I woke up this morning, I saw a notification from ~3:30 that Apple Intelligence was now enabled, and it was. The iPad was not connected to a charger overnight.

So the whole activation process is still a bit buggy and feels very random when it doesn't work right away.

Well to make Apple Intelligence available in the EU Apple has to comply to their regulations regarding gatekeeping AI solutions on their devices, what runs where.
When watching the 16e reveal I thought Apple had worked all that out for a specific time early April.
I guess I’ll download the dev beta myself and see if the reports are true that it works, even with an in Germany created Apple ID.

My Apple ID is a German one. Never had a US Apple account.

But we are here in the 18.4 Beta 1 thread, right? 18.4 with AI will be available in April in German(y). But beta 1 is out now!!
 
It eventually started working for me too for German. I had to reboot multiple times until it finally showed up.
 
Has anyone else had any Control Centre issues with the Home controls? Mine keep losing the connection to the linked accessories and showing the “Choose Scene or Accessory“ setup message.

Have to delete and re-add the controls (sometimes multiple times) to get them back and working again.

MDM Changes​

For enterprise and education users, Apple made some updates to Mobile Device Management. MDM can disable ‌Apple Intelligence‌ reports, Mail smart replies, Safari summarize content, and the Idle Reboot feature that causes iPhones to restart after inactivity.

There are also options for preventing the modification of default calling and messaging apps, and there is a feature that allows a nearby ‌iPhone‌ or ‌iPad‌ to be used to sign into a Mac with an Apple Account.

I looked in the release notes on developer.apple.com but unless I'm blind I don't see it listed anywhere. Was this gotten from some other source?
