Me: Hey Siri, open garage door 2

Siri: OK, which garage door would you like to open; garage door 1 or garage door 2?

Me: Garage door 2

Siri: OK, which garage door would you like to open; garage door 1 or garage door 2?

Me: two

Siri: I’m sorry, I don’t recognize that.
She does that for our TVs too. I said living room you idiot! And why is she so inconsistent. One time in the LR I can say turn on TV, and she will. Another time she will ask which one. And then things she will say. Sometimes I will ask her to turn the volume up, and she'll just do it. Another time she will say " Media will now play louder" Why doesn't she just either say that or not every time??

Siri is better than it was before, but the improvements have taken way too long. It appears the competition is way better, which is embarrassing as Apple led the way with this first. I use it for basic functions because Siri cannot understand anything else. Even things Siri should be able to do due to Apple’s existing services is a complete disaster. Asking it to play something that has the same (or similar name) just doesn’t work. I want it to play a movie, it plays a song instead- sometimes with a title not remotely similar to the movie title I requested. It’s even more annoying when I can see Siri understood my request because of the transcript, but chooses to do something else completely
Is there a specific word structure to let her know you want to WATCH something. I will even say watch, and she will still be dumb. And when I literally say the exact name and she gives choices; even worse, when some of the choices don't even have the words I said!

The one she does sometimes, she did again this morning. MOST of the time if I say "Hey Siri, 15 minutes" she'll set a timer for 15 minutes. This morning she said "Set an alarm for Monday at 0800" How is that even CLOSE to what I said?!?!

I had to rename my garage doors "East" and "West" for this same problem. I wish Siri could understand belonging, as in My garage door, and my wife could say the same thing, and open hers.

I have mine labeled as ‘large’ and ‘small’ and she’ll ask me which one when asked to open or close either, and still wouldn’t get it.

I wish Siri can understand and answer in two languages interchangeably for bilingual households like Google Assistant has been able to.
That can be hilarious at times with Google though it generally works very well. As a bilingual couple, Google will go on some philosophical rant in German I barely understand while I'm at home by myself, and im like "Google! Halt! Google Halt!"

I try Siri every few iterations of iOS to see if it has improved. For practical purposes, it never does, so I don't use it and then wait another few years. Siri is essentially useless except for one thing (speaking to my HomePod): "Hey Siri, play [insert artist or genre]." That is literally the only thing I have found it useful for (benefits outweigh the considerable frustrations and mistakes. Compare this to Google. I am not a Google user, but I have friends that are, and the way they are able to interact with Google does make me think that, unless Apple totally ditches Siri and replaces it with something else from the ground up (something they should have done 5 years ago), this will (and should) eventually be the end of Apple. It is truly absurd that a company with the resources of Apple can't figure out how to evolve a useable talk interface.
Yeah, it's bizarre. I don't know if a ground up re-write is in the pipeline at Apple or If they have their head in the sand.

Im constantly able to compare the two as I have both a HomePod and Google Speaker speaker at home and my car uses both Google Assistant and CarPlay Siri.
Google just consistently outplays Siri. It understands me better. It reads me the meanings and definitions of things rather than telling me to check a website on my phone. I can naturally converse with it sometimes. Smalltalk.

This is a shame and I believe there is an underlying deep seated rot that this causes in their eco system...This being that Apple consider SIRI is a big value proposition for HomePod, AirPods, Watch but I personally didn't consider SIRI when buying these devices. I purchased these despite SIRI so it's not really much of a value proposition to me.

That all said, it's totally necessary for CarPlay driving.

I think you make a great point with the CarPlay > Siri integration. Siri needs to become a much better product for the average person to even consider using a UI in their vehicle that consists of Apple's ecosystem.

Probably nobody, that’s really all she can do after 10 years. Easily one of Apple’s greatest failures.
It's crazy, it really is.

I use Google Assistant ALL THE TIME on my personal device (Pixel 6 Pro). It's flawless, it gets what I request right 99% of the time, and it's actually useful. Siri on my 12 Pro Max work phone is so awful in comparison. Even if the iPhone 15 Pro Max has USB-C, no notch, and a periscope camera, the fact that Siri is so bad would make me still question going back to iOS full time.

I guess it depends on the use case, similar to "ipad as a laptop replacement". What Siri does well Siri does well. If you're into "who won the world series in 1929", google is better. **
**edit: Out of curiosity, I just asked Siri the question and it was answered...so I guess YMMV. 🤷‍♂️

My wife uses it just fine in her vehicle that supports CarPlay. And so do I (as my vehicle supports (wireless) carplay as well)

If Apple is going to rely on Siri for automated driving like a Tesla does, I wouldn't have any faith in Siri controlling my vehicle, my speedometer, and depending on what kind of car - the reading on my gas/battery gauge.

Siri on device capabilities (to the extent that can be done), would be VERY welcome on the homepods.

The current state of Siri there is complete mess.
This post will mostly be about the opposite of on device capabilities but I’m totally with you there. It should be far faster than it is for local requests.

I can’t wait for Siri on my watch and phone to communicate with Siri on HomePod. I asked Siri on my watch since my phone was in my pocket, what the charge on my AirPods was. “I can’t do that on Apple Watch”.

Ok I can understand that, but aren’t you practically omnipresent? A device that knows this answer, on the same network or in Bluetooth range could communicate it to you, right?

Or when I want HomePod Siri to send something to my phone it just gives a verbal answer and when I want a verbal answer it sends it to my phone. If I say “on/to my iPhone” that should be clear how I expect it to accommodate my request and I already know it knows how to do that on its own.

I refuse to believe that Apple cannot get this figured out after all these years. As someone who went to and loved public school, apple definitely sent Siri to public school for her education 😂

I wouldn't bet my life that Tesla gets it right 100% of the time.

With every iteration of iOS, Apple makes improvements to the built-in Siri voice assistant, and iOS 16 is no exception. Offline support has been expanded, Siri can finally hang up calls, and there's improved guidance on when and where you can access Siri.

iOS-16-Siri-Guide-Feature.jpg

This guide outlines everything that's new with Siri, plus it includes details on the updates to Dictation.

Siri

Simpler Shortcuts

Shortcuts activated by Siri no longer require a setup process to use them. When you download and install an app, shortcuts can be activated by Siri right away.

Emoji in Texts

When you're sending a message using Siri, you can ask Siri to insert an emoji into your message. You'll need to be specific about the character that you're requesting, and it's also helpful to say "emoji" after each request so Siri doesn't get confused.

Hanging Up Calls

If you're having a hands-free conversation with someone and it ends, you can ask Siri to hang up the call.

Automatic Message Sending

In the Settings app, the Siri and Search section has a new option for automatically sending a message with Siri, which removes the confirmation step that you have to go through when sending text through Siri.

Having to approve each message can be a frustration if you're having a long conversation with someone and you don't have access to your phone to type, so this streamlines the process, plus it works with CarPlay.

It is an opt-in feature and it can be toggled off for the car and headphones if desired.

Siri Command Guidance

If you want to know more about how you can take advantage of Siri, just ask. When you're in an app or doing something on your iPhone, say "Hey Siri, what can I do here?" to get details on what Siri is capable of.

You can also ask Siri about a specific app with a command like "Hey Siri, what can I do with [insert app name]?"

More Offline Functionality

Siri is able to do more on device in iOS 16 without having to contact an Apple server, which means there are a wider array of functions that are available when you don't have an internet connection.

Siri can process HomeKit, Intercom, and Voicemail requests when you are offline.

Accessibility Features

In the Accessibility section of the Settings app under the "Siri" heading, there are new options to change Siri's pause time, which causes the voice assistant to wait for you to finish speaking for a longer period of time. Siri Pause Time can be set to Default, Longer, and Longest.

There's also an option to "Announce Notifications on Speaker" to have Siri speak notifications aloud, and a "Prefer Spoken Responses" option can be toggled on to cause Siri to speak aloud in situations such as the phone being silenced.

Dictation

Apple with iOS 16 entirely overhauled the dictation experience, making it easier to swap between voice and touch. When you're dictating text on the iPhone or iPad, you can tap into the text field and type with the keyboard to make edits and insert QuickType suggestions without having to stop the dictation process.

There's also a new cursor popover that's available when you're dictating text, and if you tap it, you can stop the dictation more quickly.

Automatic Punctuation

While you dictate text, your device will intelligently add punctuation, putting in commas, periods, and question marks where appropriate.

The iPhone or iPad will listen to what you're saying, wait for you to finish, and then add commas and periods based on the structure of your words. It's not always perfect, but it's better than having to speak punctation as is required in iOS 15 and earlier.

Emoji Support

As with Siri, the built-in dictation feature also supports inserting emoji by voice command.

Dictation in Messages

In the iOS 16 Messages app, the Dictation icon is right in the messages text box, making it much easier to get to. If Dictation is enabled, you'll see a tappable microphone icon that starts a dictation setting.

The Dictation icon replaces the voice message icon that was at the right side of the Messages text entry box in iOS 15. If Dictation is not enabled, there is no icon in the text box.

Could Apple just make Siri work correctly? "Hey Siri, can you ask Alexa to do this task instead?" Sigh

The worst one I've ever had was, I said "Hey Siri, tell my wife I'm headed home" and Siri responded "I don't know who <my wife's actual name> is, its not in the contacts" then how do you know her name?
I get that from time to time. Siri forgets who my wife is then remembers days later. Wait a minute, now that I think about it that might be me and not Siri... 🤔

Honest question, who uses Siri daily for more than setting a timer, alarm, or asking the temperature?

I’ve tried but it’s too unreliable, which is really frustrating. Tells me “something went wrong, try again” waaaay more than acceptable

Steve Jobs died the day before it was announced

We should’ve taken that as a sign. Perfect representation of how Siri would make us feel

Other than when driving, hardly ever. If I wanted to pick up the phone and hit a link after asking a question, I would’ve typed it in to begin with.

But I have to be honest, when I’m looking for a place near by when driving, more times than not, Siri is helpful.

And the rest, her progress animation just spins until she tells me there was a problem.

Such a disappointment, Siri. So limited but so promising.
This is so true. Especially disappointing are the features that Siri had at one time but that have been taken away. That would include being able to have Siri add something to an existing note, and asking Siri to search your photos for pictures of obj, people, or for pictures from a certain date. That feature was so awesome especially when, as I do, a person has 10,000 or more pictures. Why Apple, why? I wonder if these features will ever be put back and why they were taken away in the first place. I would also like Apple‘s weather app to be able to tell me the pollen count outside and what pollen is prevalent. If you can tell me the humidity you ought to be able to tell the pollen information which is also very helpful.

I've used Siri at home and on my phone and each new version just seems to make it worse for a while before it gets better.

I understand that Apple is trying to keep things private despite the odd setback however I believe there is such a thing as too much shielding. It makes Siri pretty much useless for anything more exiting that the weather forecast and turning on some lights.
Apple should let Siri have access to every function on your device. Or at least Apple‘s own apps. there is such a thing as too much shielding I quite agree, but if Apple still wants to shield us why is it shielding us from stuff that is already on our device such as the ability to search photos and to add to an existing note? As I mentioned before both of these functions used to exist in siri’s capabilities but they have been taken away. Siri ought to have access to everything that spotlight does. If nothing else, add a “Siri pro“ in accessibilities and let us turn it on there. At an absolute minimum the M1 chips oughT to be able to allow Siri to do that.

File a feature request. Should be simple enough from their end.
How do you file a feature request? I would love to be able to ask Apple to please make the pollen status available through Siri when I ask for the weather. Also, Apple leave iOS phones have the ability to be told when there is a weather emergency. This is not something that is available on iPad, and one of my favorite Alexa features is to ask her something and for her to say by the way there is a flood warning or a thunderstorm warning in your area. Siri doesn’t tell me anything like that.

Siri is awful. You know it’s bad when Rene Ritchie trashes it. I expected Siri to be so much better by now but it’s as if Siri has stood still all these years since Steve Jobs introduced it.
Its terrible, why cant they just lets us use Alexa or Google ? I have turned on voice feedback and send repeated I hate you Siri and you are s*** Siri requests as part of my morning routine now !
