No real use when doing serious work.
What is serious work?

For example, if I use Safari to log into my OWA account and send tasking requirements to 40 sites, would that not be considered serious work?

Or if I edit operating procedures using Pages, would that not be serious work?

Guess I am missing your point.

You know I keep reading this as if the iPod Touch's screen is perfect for any and every purpose. It just seems like such an empty, red herring statement.

We're not giving Steve Jobs marching orders here, we're just sharing our impressions of a product and its usefulness as we see it. Clearly, everyone's needs and opinions are different. Some obviously love it; some don't. For me and my needs, the iPad with its current feature set isn't enough to get me to bite. If you love the iPad, great. Buy it and enjoy it. Maybe I'll also end up buying one down the road when it has more to offer.

, an O/S setup that doesn't look like it's a spaced out/stretched out iPhone O/S
That's fair. The blown-up iPhone home screen looks a little absurd, with the icons way too far apart. But it's not a terribly big deal, unless you plan to spend lots of time admiring your vast collection of apps. The rest of the stuff they've done with the UI looks pretty good.

The device just seems lazy... I mean, people were not paying attention to Jobs' unveiling of the device -- they were texting away!
You realize the room was full of journalists, right? They're not paid to gaze in awe upon whatever device is being announced. The ones who weren't live blogging were at least taking notes.

LOL - right here

Google is significant, and that comes under the category of other commercial reasons for not liking Flash. They are significant and influential because they actually do have major market share. That has nothing whatsoever to do with Apple. Given the actual browser share of Mobile Safari, what Apple say makes no difference either way, except to fanboys obviously, who proclaim it from the hills as some sort of Internet salvation while missing the bleeding obvious - Mobile Safari is (for at least a while yet) insignificant, and MAC OS X does have Flash - some "message" then.

That's true, but not relevant since it's a high percentage of something that itself is minute. There are more than 1.7 billion web users - and how many iPod/iPod touches?

Awesome post!

But I don't think blindness will be cured by this reality check :)

I think this is just a neat device to take when your travelling... No real use when doing serious work.

"iWork" - the clue is in the name.

That is what most work computers are used for anyway, spreadsheets and word processing

LOL. I do realize this. But many were, admittedly, tuning out the talk -- and not just to blog, report about the device. That's the point I was trying to make.

Put me in the camp who can't wait to get their hands on an iPad! I'm still undecided between the 3G version and the basic wi-fi only, but that's my only indecision regarding this purchase!

I think the rumors of a desktop touch computer from Apple are probably true.... why can't the iPhone OS be used in a desktop appliance, as well?

I advise to wait a few week after Apple starts selling it. If there is a major problem(s) with the device...

I advise to wait for a few years for Apple to pull finger out first...

Potential is huge though - I hope they'll get to it eventually some time this decade :)

Except when "serious work" apps start appearing for it.

We're not talking about iPhone apps here. Apps for the iPad will be on a whole new level. That's why developers are so excited. They get to start over, with a new device that allows for more powerful and varied apps.

mac mini running at 1024x768 somewhere in the house with a wifi vnc connection and you have a portable touchscreen imac.

Mine is running at 1280x720 for plex, so close enough. Full screen Jaadu VNC would be fantastic

Well, was a lil underwhelmed when iPad (still giggling at the name choice) was first announced. But now that we know what we are actually gonna get and there`s no point in dreaming about an iTablet as powerful as the MacBook, I`m now leaning towards getting this thing. In the last couple of days, I`ve found myself in more than a few situations where iPad would have been so much useful compared to either my Macbook or the iPod touch. I know I`ll be getting it for sure now. Just wish I could get atleast 32GB for the base model.

I agree, it kind of reminds me of when the PS3 just came out. It's software library was insignificant, and most users had to rely on their existing library of PS1 and PS2 games to get by... Sony at the time touted the systems potential, and though potential doesn't really fly by us consumers, you have but only to look at the PS3 now. The potential is really starting to show. I think iWork on the iPad was a simple glimpse of the potential of this device, can you imagine what other devs will come up with when this thing hits its stride? And just like the PS3 I will (eventually) buy an iPad.

Ipad Garbage...

If it supported "the full internet" as Stevo seems to think it does (or enjoys lying about) and had one LOUSY front facing camera, I would keep my mouth shut (it needs 2 cams in reality). DON'T BUY IT until THEY FIX THE INTENTIONAL GLARING PROBLEMS and intentionally CRIPPLED FUNCTIONALITY. Buying this crap sends them the wrong message... that they can give you a rock and you will swoon.

Make a DECENT DEVICE and I'll buy three... this thing isn't worth the slave labor that will go into making it...:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

However, the tablets running Windows 7 will be even more inexpensive and open to an even more massive audience of developers. Plus, they will not be crippled with a phone OS focused on "media consumption." Apple blew it by not putting OS X on the iPad.

No tablet with a desktop OS has ever been a success. The reason for this is because the OS and the apps they run are not designed for touch interaction. Can you imagine trying to click on the little green windows maximize button on a ten inch screen without a mouse? How about looking through the Windows 7 registry? No thanks.

iPad

Board games will be pretty cool on this. Now kids will be able to not only watch movies in the car, but be able to play virtually any board game in the car too. It's a great time to be alive.

But that's for PCs! Apple said it in the ads! Oh my God, what is happening?!!

What do you mean what's happening?

Macs have been used for word processing, layout design and a variety of other productivity-related tasks since their introduction. It's only natural that Apple continue to offer a viable platform for these functions.

Wow, The only thing this device is really missing is a camera. Multi-tasking is just a software update away. What is the power of the iphone? It's apps! What is the limitation of the iphone/ipod? It's size! This is the perfect device for a one to one program for schools. It would add functionality and save money on books. Think doctors and hospitals, restaurants and reservation services. The ipad provides a platform for developers to build true work related apps.

Just wait and see.

Haha yah. A brand new 2010 macbook with a 1024-by-768 display. Riiiiigghhhttt ;)

Depends on how you look at it, if its an iPad that turns in to a MacBook then I'm not sure the lower resolution would be that big a problem. But you're missing the bigger picture - potentially millions of people with a 10" touch screen, not offering some ways of hooking it up with a desktop / laptop would be a missed opportunity.

Maybe just a docking option to connect it to another Mac, or as someone else suggested it would be perfect to add a display to a Mini. Loads of potential opportunities that I'm sure Apple will make the most of.

iPad Ouija Board!

I can see two people sitting across from one another holding each end playing asteroids or something on it.

Don't matter what people say, people will buy it (including me).

I miss a camera and more HD space (I have +40gigs ONLY music). I just hope they jailbreak soon so I can configure the way I want it.

WOuld be nice to see revisions with webcam, more speed, etc. But for what I see, that processor handles quite well the applications. Don't matter if they come up with a 2ghz faster. Applications open instantly in demonstrations so that's good enough for me.

I think the iPad is a perfect addition to the Apple family of products. I have an iPhone, Macbook Pro, and iPod touch. We all know the quality of the iPhones battery, so when I am at home or at work I used my iPod touch for email/twitter/music/browsing. The iPad will replace my touch for use at home when watching tv or just relaxing. The only downfall is multitasking which I hope comes in an update very soon!
