Hello guys, need help! This is my first time buying MacBook. I am waiting to buy M2 Air 8/512. I will mostly be working on Virtual Desktop in my MacBook. I am confused if I should go for MBP M2 since it would be of same price as Air for this configuration plus I am also not sure if 8 gb ram is good enough for running VDI in any of these machines! Please suggest which one is better mbp m2 vs air 8/512
The redesigned MacBook Air with the all-new M2 Apple silicon chip will be available for customers starting Friday, July 15, MacRumors has learned from a retail source.

The new MacBook Air was announced and previewed during WWDC earlier this month, with Apple stating availability will begin in July. The MacBook Air features a redesigned body that is thinner and lighter than the previous model. Thanks to the M2 chip, the MacBook Air features up to 18 hours of battery life, according to Apple. With a launch planned for July 15, pre-orders can be expected to go live on Friday, July 8.
The new MacBook Air starts at $1199, with the highest configuration costing $2499. The previous M1-powered MacBook Air remains in Apple's lineup for $999 for customers looking for a cheaper option.

Very rare though. Best hope for most is to get it on launch day in reality. Some people receive them early
Personally, I would go for the Air this time. The MBP13 has that awful touch bar (some people like it though) and no magsafe. I can't tell you how many times magsafe has saved my laptop over the years. For people with pets or children this should be an obvious advantage. The active cooling of the Pro is only going to be a relevant factor if you push the system frequently. Pushing occasionally is not going to be that big a deal, if you edit video four times a year, waiting a few more seconds is probably not worth it. But if you compile code, do statistical analysis or photo/video editing tasks daily, yes, the cooling is going to make a relevant difference.Hello guys, need help! Thank you so much for the suggestion! Given the same price for 8/512gb air and pro, I wasn’t sure if going for air would be a good option. My most of the work would be on a virtual desktop that’s why I was going for 8/512 would be reasonable, but I would definitely think about 16gb option as well.Personally, I would go for the Air this time. As for the memory, if you have the money to get 16, it is a good idea. The system will have significantly longer lifespan than with only 8. I would, however, think 8 is enough for a few remote desktop sessions. But I have never used VDI so I can't say for sure. What I can say is that starting the built in VNC client and connecting to a remote Windows box on my M1 mini took all of 192 MB. Right now, I'm using Firefox, VS Code, iTerm and Xcode (and that remote desktop session), and htop is showing 5.4 GB occupied memory. I bought 16 GB because I also run some virtual machines, occasionally edit photos and video and I'm thinking the money spent will increase the lifespan enough to make it worth it.
I'm sure someone here can give a definitive answer about VDI, the question is just where to ask... 🤔 Perhaps make a new thread in the laptop section?
