If you want a BTO, better order right away!

Let’s hope the base model doesn’t suffer from the slow SSD issue.
I think traditionally the MBA is designed with maximum profit in mind and needs to be a step below the MBP. Let’s hope not too much skimping since new design too.

$1400 if you want 16gb of ram lol…no sorry

You can get a MBP 14 on discount or mint (used on swappa) with double the storage, pro motion, sd card slot etc…for a few dollars more
Few dollars more, try $400 more, lowest price there is $1800.

That said student pricing with the back to school sale is where this laptop really knocks it out of the park. $100 off plus $150 gift card, and if you stock up on Apple gift cards when they go on sale even better.

Precisely. I was going to get the $1499 M2 Air, but Best Buy had the 14" MacBook Pro on sale for $1799. Faster processor, twice the RAM, same 512GB SSD, larger screen, Mini-LED, ProMotion 120Hz, etc... it was a no-brainer.

Good luck getting one. This thing is going to fly off the shelves. Especially with back to school the month after. Very compelling machine.
M2 Air will appeal to those who must have the latest design (admittedly a pretty sizable segment of Apple fans) but for everyone else, the M1 Air is the more compelling machine… almost 30% cheaper (after discounts online) for similar performance.

And if you bump up M2 Air to 16/512, you’re looking at only $100 less than the 14” MB Pro after recent online discounts.

I honestly find it hard to justify an M2 Air.

I too tend to follow the logic “well if I’m gonna spend that much, I might as well…” but that’s not how the market works or how most people shop. $100 increments are entirely different markets.

I can't help but wonder if they wanted to save what faster SSD stock they could get for the M2 Air. But who knows with this company haha.
Actually, the source of the issue isn’t the speed of the NVMe disk itself, it is the number of modules and lanes connecting them. When in the past Apple used to put 2x128GB NVMe drives, now they put a single 256GB. Without that paralelization, the speed is half.

With the M1 you had, say 2000MBps (2kMBps) for each module of 128GB. With two modules and two lanes, you had double the badwith (2x2kMBps=4kMBps). Now Apple is using just one module, which has double the capacity but the same speed per module (1x2kMBps=2kMBps)

The flash chip wasn't any slower on the base 13" M2 MBP. It's the same chip as the one on the 512 version. The reason why it's slower is because they cannot write to two chips in parallel. The 256GB chip in the M2 MBP is the same as the two in the 512GB MBP. The likelihood is that there is a shortage of 128GB chips. It's more likely to be a shortage than a cost savings because two chips are generally cheaper than one with the same cumulative capacity.

No Touchbar, ugly notch. I’ll pass.
I don’t mind the notch and the midnight color is amazing, however I understand about loosing the TouchBar. I’m going to wait until both are in the stores to compare them in person. Right now I’m leaning towards the 13” MacBook Pro. Whatever I end up with will be maxed out, so it will be a while. 🤭

Given the circumstances, it’s wise to choose 16/256 or 8/512. If you choose 8/256, good luck!
You'll always end up with a way better machine after you spend $500 over retail for them. Apple has been doing this retail price bait and switch for way too long. What used to be better was you could pay the retail price and then upgrade it down the road for half as much. Anyone wanting a great laptop from Apple shouldn't be looking to spend anything less than $1,800 because of taxes and Apple care. And this is still their low end laptop we are talking about. The m1 version they have is strictly for those who don't mind paying new for something they could get for less used.

For normal household use its great at the lower prices that are still way more than the rest of the competition for that sort of light work. If you keep the open apps to a normal amount, but for work, thats where they get you, you really do need to spend $500 more to get a capable work system or else you will feel it when you really need to depend on it to get things done.
