I would buy these in a heartbeat if they work like the upcoming update for Apple computers. If any nearby iPhone can ping the tags so you can locate it when you're not nearby, that would be a game changer.
Not a game changer. Many other trackers already do this.

Assuming this will probably work offline using the crowdsourced “Find My” through other people’s devices (like announced in the keynote) this should be a big hit. I totally see myself sticking this thing somewhere in my bicycle tube, another on my key ring, wallet, etc. provided it’s small enough. This would significantly increase the chances of finding your stuff in case it’s lost or stolen.

Just had a thought.

These devices might use the new technology that Apple has mentioned before, we could expect that each tile device will covertly use and bounce off of the data from Apple Devices owned by other people to locate the items further away.

Great minds!

I just picked up a bunch of TrackRs from meh because they were like $2 each (shipping included). I got tiles for xmas a few years ago and they were just too damn big.

Maybe I'll stick some of these on my club headcovers, because they have a tendency to fall off during a round. There are few things as annoying as having to walk back 4 holes looking for your headcover.

So similar to Tile, and other trackers. I mean, exactly the same expect with unfair advantage. Are they inviting getting themselves in another protracted lawsuit?

I mean as a consumer I want the best posible product regardless of who it’s from, and it looks like Apples integration will make it great, I just wonder about fairness.

Where did it say that? I expect Apple will add an interesting twist to the tracker concept.

I doubt there are many trackers that can utilise crowdsourcing tracking via Apple devices.
Yes, there are. They work via the app on the phone relaying position data. ios and android. This is nothing new. Anyone who has the app is relaying data for the tracker.

"Walk around several feet and move your iPhone up and down until a balloon comes into view," a string in the internal Find My app bundle reads.

So what you're telling me is that in the early morning hours when I'm searching for my keys, I will pull up my phone and see a red balloon floating there...very comforting...

I expect there will be something new with regards to relaying the position. Let’s discuss this further after the keynote.

How many people have these tracker things? Compared to the total number of Apple devices in the wild most of which have “Find My” enabled this number is negligible. You want the best possible coverage if you really want to recover your things.

I think it is time to dispel the notion that it's necessary for Apple to block competition in order to deliver the best possible product they can deliver. They would have everyone believe that. I don't.

Yawn. Not innovation when it’s been done before but then that has sometimes been apples way of business often; refine a product then new. If they call a tile replacement innovation then they really are lost

A lot. I don't know the exact number. Depends on the company. Tile being the largest. But keep in mind they work on both IOS and Android so you benefit from 2 different ecosystems.

I imagine not everyone is going to want their phone to be used to relay this data and apple will let people opt out, or opt in. And thus you won't have the entirety if ios for this network. Just a guess.

White trackers will be available this fall for $49.99 each. Trackers in black will be announced but available up to a year later and in constrained quantities for $29.99 extra per tracker, with eBayers inflating prices even more. You know this will happen.

Why can't the Watch notify the user if it loses contact with the iPhone? That seems like something that should have been implemented long ago.
Lots of reasons. And the fact alone that it seems like something they should have added on Day 1, and still haven't after 5 years, should tell you exactly that.

Here are some:

- It would be false positive hell. Apple Watch disconnects from iPhone all the time, but you don't realize it because it has both Wi-Fi and (for some) Celluar to fallback on it, and switch between. Since it doesn't constantly ping you everytime this happens, users are very unaware of the frequency.

- With the advent of Celluar on Apple Watch, leaving your phone behind is an intended use case, and it would be impossible to distinguish between intentional and unintentional.
