That article doesn't disprove anything I said! Devices relaying location automatically using a community of devices.

Sure it is crowdsourcing, but how big is Tile's crowd? 1M 2M

How many iOS devices will be running iOS13 in the first week of release?

Tile is dead in the water
Tile claims the lost feature is used 4 million times a day. That's just the people using it daily. So the network must be huge. But I haven't seen any ownership numbers.

And we're assuming apple won't let people opt out of this on iphone. I would think there would be an uproar from people not wanting their phones used for this. We'll have to wait for the unveiling.

Hopefully they implement something similar into Apple Card 2. As it’s already in my wallet 99% of the time.

Seriously. Worst skeuomorphism ever and this is coming from someone who doesn't mind skeuomorphism when its clean, functional and makes sense. How does a red balloon signify you are getting close or found something?

Some type of radar thing would have made more sense.

The price has to be reasonable, don’t charge $50 for each one. I’d like to stick one of these in my wallet.

Was exactly my 1st thought.

If it's going to be useful to have, you'd want a load of them for many devices.
9.99 each would be great, if it's something like 29 or 39 then forget it. Be cheaper to lose some items than stick a tab on one!

Lots of reasons. And the fact alone that it seems like something they should have added on Day 1, and still haven't after 5 years, should tell you exactly that.

Here are some:

- It would be false positive hell. Apple Watch disconnects from iPhone all the time, but you don't realize it because it has both Wi-Fi and (for some) Celluar to fallback on it, and switch between. Since it doesn't constantly ping you everytime this happens, users are very unaware of the frequency.
That's easy to solve by defining "safe locations", just like for the trackers described in this article.
- With the advent of Celluar on Apple Watch, leaving your phone behind is an intended use case, and it would be impossible to distinguish between intentional and unintentional.
Then you obviously turn the feature off (unless you're in a safe location). You'll have to do the same thing with the trackers if you leave behind the item it's attached to on purpose.

It would be nice to have a kinetic mechanism charging the battery, replacing the batteries is the biggest drag with these trackers. Is that even possible?

another example why developing a unique product to work with an Apple device can eventually put you out of business when they copy your idea.

Not a game changer. Many other trackers already do this.

Many trackers claim they do this, but none do it reliably enough to be useful. Looks good in the marketing copy though.

Yawn. Not innovation when it’s been done before but then that has sometimes been apples way of business often; refine a product then new. If they call a tile replacement innovation then they really are lost

Apple could build a rocket that could reach Mars in 3 days, and you'd parrot the same comment. Yawn, been done before.

I suppose it depends on how we measure reliably. Mine seem to work just fine. What issue are you experiencing?

I wish I could say "no that's ridiculous" but it has happened during trips!
Well, we lost an aunt once when she was hallucinating, having a tag on her sure would have simplified things.

Could this be another medical move by Apple? The current devices are very expensive and don't work outside a small area around the house. This could be huge!

Same for Ankle monitors, this is a technology ripe for disruption.

I'm concerned about the direction that the user experience is taking. That screenshot above says:

Go to Settings and sign into your Apple ID..."

Why not just give them the opportunity to sign in right there and then? Why present instructions to go somewhere else, and then they need to come back again?

I'm losing confidence in Apple's UX team when they implement hoop-jumping like this. I know it's minor, but each time they do this, it contributes to the overall complexity of the system for end users, particularly seniors and newbies.

Tile is useful and works, but it too is overpriced. Bluetooth beacons cost a few cents each to manufacture and when they are available for that price then we have a disruptive event. Until then Apple is not leading the way to anywhere with this.

Exactly. Apple should take the high road, and implement this as an API and system feature that any developer can tap into, including Apple. That way it's a level playing field, not Apple vs. the rest of them.

If they do make these, I hope they make the alert noise from the tags a LOT louder than Tile's. The tile tags are practically inaudible unless they are nearby and unobstructed... at which point I could find the item anyway.
