I like testing out various tech products but I don't do well with having a watch on my wrist all the time. I like stainless steel so I plan to buy the stainless steel white band. If it isn't comfortable to me for full time wear, I'll go back to wearing my garmin vivosmart.

I've agonised endlessly about this.

I'm almost certainly going to go for the 42mm Sports in space grey.

Pros
I think it looks really good. The shiny SS case detracts from the screen. The screen on the space grey Sports shines out from the matte background
It's £180 cheaper for the same watch.
It's lighter.
It's first generation. How will I feel next year if I've spent over £500 and the Apple Watch 2 comes out and its "so much better"?
I actually don't really like any of the other bands. Not so much that I want to pay the prices Apple are asking. I did see a video of an SS with a Milanese loop and it did look pretty good, but we're talking £600: that's almost double the price. That's really hard to justify.

Cons
The SS does look classier/dressier/more grown up.
The SS has many more strap options. You can't really marry any of the other straps with the space grey Sports.

Questions
Does the sapphire screen really make a difference? I suspect no-one knows the answer to this. Apple might, but they're certainly not saying. Does the ceramic back really make a difference? I suspect no-one knows the answer to this, either.

Thoughts
With other Apple products, if you pay more, you get more. I have the iPhone 6+ 128GB. It's the most expensive. But you get more for your money: bigger screen than the iPhone 6, more memory than the 32GB model. With the watch I'm not clear on what extra you get if you pay more. Shiny case? Is that worth £180? Sapphire screen? Ceramic back? Are these things meaningful? Really?

I am really torn. I have to buy two, one for me and one for my wife.

If we both get the ones we want, it will be

$749+$699 + 8.375% tax = $1506.54

If we both get the Apple Sport, that's

$349+$399 + 8.375% tax = $781.41.

What a huge difference. LOL.

Who knows what I'm gonna do.

i'm a person, a human being, i'm not a electronic watch that relies on an phone to work properly.

if you HAVE to buy one, then buy me one too. thanks kid.

I'm not happy about the price I'm going to have to pay for the SS but I really can't abide the sport. It's too garish for me.

I am sincerely torn between the SS with Milanese band and the silver Sport with the White band.

I am a runner so the lighter weight of the Sport appeals to me. The cost is much better as well.

However, I really don't like the color of any of the plastic bands except white and black. I LOVE milanese bands - I had a Skagen for years, and the band is so comfortable in any weather, and has a nice techy look. I also work with chemicals so I am thinking that in case I accidentally splash, the SS with steel band will be more durable. However is it worth $300 price premium?

I will probably pick the sport for launch and then go try on the other one. If I truly love, love the SS with the band, I'll return and go for the upgrade.

I was interested in getting a SS watch, but now that I know the price I will settle on the Space Gray Sports and maybe buy a nicer band from Apple or 3rd party down the road. Anyway I've always worn cheap Timex watches so I don't mind the look of the Sport model.

Seems like the space grey Sport is going to be one of the top-selling combos. I wonder how long we'll have to wait after 24th April to actually get one.

This is easy -- there's really only one right answer.

Buy the nice one for your wife and the cheap one for yourself. You didn't pick your wife because she's average.

SS with sport band.

I want the option to be able to use some of the SS bands, and I can afford the extra $200 so why not?

Why not buy a sport with a sport band and the later buy the other band(s) that you want seperetly.

I'm going with the stainless steel version mainly for the band selection. I think the sport model looks nice but not having the option of using a leather or link band to pass it off in a work/formal environment was a bit of a deal breaker for me

As far as I know the bands are interchangeable.

My GF gave me a Skagen with the Milanese band. She said I needed a nice-looking watch. (I wasn't aware of the concept of a nice-looking watch, and my Timex Indiglo always kept good time.)

It IS a nice-looking watch, and the band is very comfortable. But it taught me the difference between a hundred-dollar watch and where I think Apple is going with the stainless steel Apple Watch.

My Skagen has a scuff in the mineral glass crystal. I have no idea how it happened, and it's only visible when the light hits it just right. The black PVD coating has worn off the clasp and parts of the mech band. The clasp started off very secure, but it has gotten loose enough to worry me sometimes. The band only has discrete size adjustments, so the fit is a compromise. And if I look closely at the ends of the mesh, there's lots of sloppiness.

If Apple's watch with Milanese loop solves all those problems (and I won't know without seeing it in person) then the price is probably justified. Even so, the Skagen is the clear winner in at least one way -- it's very thin.

Apple's combinations are irking me right now. But maybe at launch time it will change.

I want the black SS + black sports band.

But to get the BLACK SS, my only option is to get it w/ the bracelet, therefore making it the most expensive SS model at $1100, PLUS I'd have to buy the sports band separately, another ~$60.

But if I wanted the polished SS, there's an option for polished SS + black sports band for much more reasonable $600!

what the frack, Apple??!

I like the way you think. I'm definitely gonna buy her the nicer one cause that's the one she really wants. Now, for me, that's a whole nother' story. I don't even wear a watch, but maybe I would if I had a nice one :).

Her Apple Watch still will be cheaper than the pair of diamond earrings I bought her a few years ago LOL.

You only take your GF out once in a while??

I'm an Apple watch (SS). I'm not sporty and I'm very girly so the sport wouldn't suit me. The SS looks nice enough and the price is reasonable.

Yep, once in a while. She wants more time in the streets?.........get a new boyfriend.

Black Sport, even though I'd prefer Black SS. But, I'm not willing to spend $549.

My Dilema

This is where I am at as well....
I originally wanted the space grey SS, but it is a 1st Gen product &
I definitely do not want to drop $1K on a device that will have newer features, and a cheaper price within a year.....
Then I have considered the SS w/ the sports band ,BUT there's the factor of a newer model arising the next year.
I have leaned towards the SS ,b/c of the sapphire display....
In ending, I/We still have much time to kick around our final decision....
My main question is the ION X glass... How prone is it to scratches? Is this the same glass that was shown in the video that was thought to be for the iphone6/6+?

SS with link bracelett and black modern buckle. I love the look of both those bands. I like the SS as it has the stainless steel case and sapphire screen. My choice was always that or the Edition and I cannot afford the Edition.

I'd say if I were to get one, I'd opt for the sport model, mostly because of the prices. True, you get more band choices with the stainless steel, but its hard to justify spending 100+ for the same watch.

42mm black on black SS (link band)
In my dreams.... can't currently afford it.

38mm blackish shiny aluminum w/ nasty rubber band
In my reality... no better option in my price range.

I've agonised endlessly about this.

I'm almost certainly going to go for the 42mm Sports in space grey.

EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED since I watched this: https://www.macrumors.com/2015/03/09/apple-watch-hands-on-impressions/

Now I'm thinking:

The space grey is too black.

The silver aluminium is surprisingly nice looking, but I don't like the coloured straps, so I'll have to buy a black one separately.

Or maybe I should just go the whole hog and get the SS with the black sports band. (With the option to buy further bands in the future.)

I've had a change of heart.

I'm going to get the Stainless Steel watch with Milanese Loop:

- Sapphire glass' resistance to scratches (My Omega is proof it works)
- Resale value will be higher if I want to upgrade later
- Milanese loop on that casing looks very sharp in my opinion. I'm also partial to this band because it reminds me of chainmail armor (I'm a D&D nerd).
