Two questions for you eGPU experts.
  1. Has anyone used the Razer Core X, if so how is it?
  2. Do you think an RX 580 8GB is sufficient to drive two 4K screens at any scaling with light/casual use (web browsing, MS Office, etc)

I have the Razer Core X. It's a very well built enclosure. Much better quality than the Akitio Node that I had before. Fans are very quiet, also, and the power supply is beefy enough (650W) to handle the most demanding of consumer cards (like the Vega 64). Power supply is internal, so no brick dangling off the back.

Price wise, it's hard to beat... at only $300 shipped direct from Razer. The only negative is it's size, which may bother some, but wasn't an issue for me as I have a ton of desk space. I'll give up a little bit of desk real estate for the performance trade off.

I'm thinking of trying the Razer Core X with a Vega 64 on my 2018 Mac Mini (i5/256/8) on a 34" UltraWide in 3440x1440 that supports FreeSync. I have a couple of questions:

1. Will 8gb be sufficient for gaming with this card? I don't know enough about the relationship between GPU and RAM. I do intend to get more RAM eventually but would like to use it straight away for a while.

2. Which version of the Vega 64 is most suitable for Mac Mini?

Spent some time working with lots of raw photos in ON1 Photo Raw, DxO PhotoLab and Luminar today.

So far, those three programs seem to operate a bit better in regards to brush actions, layers and other intensive tasks. I can just hear the fan spin up on the Asus box when certain actions are processing.

** One incident did arise to cause concern. On1 Photo Raw may be the culprit. While doing some editing on a raw file, a sudden blank screen happened. Actually, the entire eGPU shut off. I reconnected the cables and power and restarted the unit. The mini was showing a crash report for ON1 Photo Raw. I wasn't able to determine what the cause was, but forwarded it to ON1 anyway.

Later in the day, I spent a few hours working again and haven't had any issues.

I'm currently running the Razer Core X with a Vega 64 on a MacBook Pro 13" with 8 gb of Ram with no issues. Runs like a dream. My BTO Mac mini will be here on Thursday to replace it. I was able to pickup this Vega 64 over the holidays for $399 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...xRFpiEqWOagt7vR4b3waAkbEEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

I'm a bit concerned.

Two times now, the Asus Station Pro with the Vega 56 has shut off completely while using ON1 Photo Raw.
I sent a crash report to ON1, but don't expect any feedback. No other program problems - DxO PhotoLab, Luminar, etc.

Oddly though, both instances were shortly after opening ON1. After a reset, I was able to work for a few hours with no further issue. I'm perplexed.

Anyone that’s interested Newegg.com has the sapphire Vega 64 on sale again right now for $399

Probably it's that software. Just to make sure it's not a hardware problem, I'd download and run Unigine Heaven to really tax the heck out of the egpu. If it doesn't shut down then, it's gotta be that software.

I do suspect the program (ON1 Photo Raw). I've got a few emails with their support team in. Lots of logs and such for them to read through. I hope we can find a solution.

And here in the UK.... nothing.
I grabbed my ASUS Vega 64 on a good sale price from eBuyer during their Black Friday sale. They currently have a good deal (in my view) on an ASUS Vega 56 (£359) -- which seems to benchmark within 10% of the performance of the Vega 64.

That's not bad to be fair. I complain, but I only plan on getting something like an RX 580 (or most likely the navi replacement) as I just want to better run several high res monitors using scaling with no lag. Plus, I hate how large the Razer Core X is, and anything more than £300 on an eGPU should be illegal.

Thanks to all for the contributions. After reading the thread, I'm wondering:

- Is it possible to run three LG Ultrafine 5k 27" monitors with 1 eGPU and a 2018 i7 Mini? Or would you have to run three 4k monitors, something like the LG 27UK850-W?

If you need an eGPU for screen real estate but not gaming then what's the way to go here? Some 4k video editing or RAW images in Lightroom would be the only requirements. Many thanks for any thoughts.

I would have thought so. However, the Black Magic eGPU is the only model that can drive the LG UltraFine 5K displays.
I guess in principle, two BM eGPus would be able to drive 4x5K displays at maximum. Plus possibly some additional displays via HDMI.

It looks like AMD will announce a Vega II, and possibly make an announcement on Navi, at CES on Wednesday morning in conjunction with Lisa Su’s keynote address.

im getting a free test sample of the Blackmagic eGPU Pro from Apple tomorrow. Im curious how the Vega56 from Blackmagic/Apple will perform next to my Vega 56 from Asus. :)

I think that a lot of us would be interested in a comparison. What enclosure are you using for the Asus Vega 56?

Is anyone else experiencing higher than normal heat from your mini while the eGPU is attached?

Let me state that I leave my eGPU connected and utilized by my mini at all times. Recently though, I have noticed that my mini is running hotter while idle than it used to without the eGPU. Also, I am not seeing any change in the eGPU (ie it is not hot or running the fans anymore than normal) while idle.

Sorry to break in with a beginner question, but if I have new Mini with a eGPU and multiple monitors could I then count on all the RAM going to the system etc. and none to video?
