I don't believe this is correct, I can use the 40mm series 5 on my wrist as an example. If I measure the height with some calipers I get less than 37mm. A 1.9-inch/48+mm Apple Watch does not currently exist.
I think I see the disconnect here. I’m referring to the size of the watch, not the screen itself.

My S6 can't last through a surf session longer than 2 hours. An extreme version with longer battery life and higher water resistance would be nice. Might be able to replace my dive watch.
All that sitting around on your board must really wear it down 😜

(Ribbing yah, haha. I miss surfing a whole hell of a lot. SD surfing 2-3 times a week. ✌️)

Yeah my s6 has some scratches on the display my s4 did as well.
As I update every 24 month I’m hoping for this one to be a keeper for 48 months but we will just wait and see.

Older I get the longer I keep a apple devices before upgrading.
Try five years 💪 OG Apple Watch S0 until the 6 came out. THAT was a very pleasant upgrade.

Yeah
This would have come in handy before I dropped my watch face down onto concrete the other day. It didn't shatter, but it has several noticeable pits in the display now. Ironic, after just watching that stupid ad about how you don't have to worry about knocking it around. Granted, they didn't show a direct impact with concrete and probably never will. I bet even the new one won't come out unscathed.
Yeah they did! Unbelievably.

They showed the skateboarder dragging the face across concrete.

You'd be hoping that for "extreme sports" they don't just make the case more rugged, but also find a way to make the screen more scratch and crack resistant, as that's where "extreme sports" will really test the materials - think mountain biking crashes, snowboard fails, rock climbing.
Sure - battery life is one thing, but the durability of a big piece of glass on your exposed wrist is far more important for "extreme sports".
After literally getting burned by Apple Watches TWICE (one was the sensor, the other a bad allergic reaction to the sports band), the Garmin Tactix is the smartwatch for me - even if it does cost as much as an iPad Pro.

If I recall, the S7 chip is pretty much the same as the S6 chip, correct? So, if the S8 will be similar to the S7, are we talking about a 2-year old chip in the latest watch? I'm not big on that idea...

Correct. Unless they announce some other new part to the SOC. It's the same chip/speed for the last 2-3 years.

That is interesting, the case measured vertically and the actual screen measured diagonally come out nearly identical. Apparently Apple goes by the vertical height of the case like you mentioned. But that being said, a 1.9-inch watch is still inaccurate.

I’m starting to think we wont see the flat side Apple Watch from the leaks. If the Series 7 sold well enough I think apple would do that to spite us. I’d be okay with current design but at least do some updates to the s8 chip. Efficiency updates perhaps.

Before you go saying “oh that was to throw off the leakers. Apple did it on purpose” why on earth would they do it with the Apple Watch and not the phone or other product? I don’t think they would waste their time. Besides the video on the keynote for Apple Watch was so badly spliced into the presentation.

A rugged Apple Watch should be plastic. I’d like a plastic version.
I'm crossing my fingers for plastic, for a different reason: I have nickel allergy and can't use the aluminum version (while under the official limits for "nickel free", it's not actually), and definitely not the stainless steel. Which means my only choice is titanium, which is expensive. I'm crossing my fingers that whatever the rugged version is, it will be a nickel free material and lower price than titanium. I currently use a ceramic series 3 that I bought used. Time to upgrade...

I've had Apple Watches since the beginning and while I swim and hike, I don't do either at any "extreme" level. But the Apple Watch is a pretty fragile piece of technology due to a glass surface that has no protection at all from impact. My second Apple Watch's glass completely cracked simply because it fell out of my locker room locker onto a tiled floor. While my Apple Watch 4 avoided damage, my AW 6 has some pretty deep scratches on its surface - and I have no clue how they got there. I - or it - never fell and I didn't participate in any high-contact activities at all.

While scratches are alright with me, I wish Apple would find a better material for its watch glass. At one point, early on, Apple was going house sapphire glass, but the company it contracted with couldn't produce the material in large enough quantities (and, to my investment dismay, subsequently went bankrupt). I understand that a 'lip' isn't desirable on a touch-sensitive watch, but surely Apple could find a better substitute for Gorilla glass - I'd pay extra for something like sapphire. The frame of the watch almost never got scratched for me.
The Steel version of the watch comes with the Sapphire display. I've had the Apple Watch (original) in steel, never scratched the display. Got the Apple Watch 3 in Aluminum, and I scratched really bad reaching into my trunk and scraped it against my OneWheels Sandpaper treads, could barely see the screen after that. Then got the Apple Watch 5 steel, still no scratches, not even the tiny hairline scratches that my phone gets from being in my pocket. I'll never not buy an Apple Watch without the sapphire screen. Expensive, so I'm only upgrading every 3-4 models, where I'd like to upgrade every other model.

As a hiker, I'd welcome a rugged Apple Watch with actual GPS, satellite phone capabilities, and battery life that would last for more than a week, possibly even recharging with something built-in (motion, solar, wizardry, etc.). Not sure that's gonna happen before I'm too old to hike, unfortunately.

Speaking of... Is there a Garmin or other product that fits that bill now?

"The display will measure in at almost two inches diagonally, which is larger than the 1.9-inch diagonal screen size"

Isn't 1.9 inches almost 2 inches? How many people could even notice a difference of 1/10th of an inch?

Well you obviously need the upgraded Pro version with the cybernetic leg implants to help you with your hike.

Yeah

Ah good catch, thank you. I definitely remember that they never showed the "after", just the incident itself. That screen would probably be unreadable, even if not technically broken.

Nice, I hope this sports version happens. I'm a swimmer and biker and would love a stronger case and battery. My Nike series 5 is pretty beat up and a stronger watch would be welcomed.

Any guesses as to how much it will weigh?
That’s the thing though.

There’s no doubt this will have an increased thickness of the casing and added weight from the casing, glass, battery, ect . Now, I don’t mind that, and that should be an expectation that when you’re introducing anything that is ‘rugged’, it will be built with more durability, but also includes adding more parts/thickness to make the product more durable.

They’ve sucked at naming things for a couple years now. Great products but cringeworthy naming. “Pro Max”. Honestly the word Max just sounds like 1990s marketing jargon. I shutter to think what this watch will be called.
That's what happens when you stop hiring on the basis of someone's ability. You get things like writers that can't write. Marketing that can't market. Etc.

should be rather noticeable on a watch.

Given the difficulties I already experience, I would say a larger display would work for "extreme sports that do not involve wearing gloves or long sleeves."
