I've ordered the 12 Pro Max and will give it a good go. I'll have that safe 14 days to try it out and compare it to the 11, so I figured it's worth a shot.
Since I had no trouble with the last one, I'm thinking it'll be fine! Fingers crossed! But I now know much better what symptoms to look out for, so we'll see.
My symptoms from using the 13 models have been pretty rapid-onset and obvious, though. I'm still feeling nauseous after using the 13 earlier! It's almost ruined my evening. 🤢 I erased that horrible thing, put it back in the box and it'll be going back to Apple later this week.
AHHHH!!! Screw it. I'm not going to bother with the 12 Pro Max. It doesn't sit right with me paying that much for last year's model. I'd be paying a lot of money just to go backwards.
I strongly suspect that I was suffering from eye strain from it last time, but it was to a lesser degree than the 13 Pro Max, for whatever reason. Now that I think about it, I recall having regular sore eyes with the 11 Pro Max I had before it when I was commuting via train pre-COVID. I'm starting to think I was getting something similar with the 12 Pro Max.
I'm not going to risk further discomfort and hassle, not to mention the money. The 11 is a brilliant phone that I can use comfortably as much as I want. There's a lot of value in that!
It was too late for me to cancel the 12 Pro Max, so I'm gonna give it a try. It's going to arrive tomorrow and I'll have 14 days in which to do a detailed comparison and decide which phone to keep. 11 or 12 Pro Max...
I do wonder why the 13 series causes me such problems. The logical conclusion on paper is that higher frequencies are less perceptible, therefore less problematic. However, it seems I'm particularly sensitive to the 13 series frequencies and/or modulation patterns.
😵
I was so shocked to find that the 13 causes me nausea! I am very sensitive to motion sickness (e.g. narrow FOV in games, reading in the back of a car, watching someone else play a motion-heavy game etc.) so I'm curious to know why I get the same thing from just using that phone. But why didn't the 13 Pro Max give me nausea as well?
PWM happens on a per-pixel level, right? For example, if you show and image that's half grey and half white, the grey half will be flickering with greater intensity (longer off periods) so it shows up darker. And if it's dark enough, it can drop into a lower frequency (e.g. 240Hz below 10% brightness in the 13 Pro, according to NotebookCheck).
Maybe the 13 Pro Max showing different frequencies in different parts of the display was causing me severe eye strain? Maybe the adaptive refresh rate has something to do with it? I've seen a few posts from members here reporting the same thing, that the 13 Pro/Pro Max is the first iPhone to cause such trouble for them.
Anyway, sorry to ramble. This stuff has been on my mind a lot because it's the first time new iPhones have caused me such awful symptoms.
I'll give the 12 Pro Max a thorough testing and will let you guys know how I get on. I'm expecting it to be fine, like the last unit I had for several months was.
