Other Eye-strain while using iPhone X and up

I went to an Apple store a few weeks back, and for the first time EVER an Apple associate knew what I was talking about when I told him the new OLED phones gave me headaches (he has an OLED-sensitive friend). Eventually they’ll HAVE to acknowledge it…right?? /s

I think there are still a number of people that have the headaches and haven't connected the dots. Last time I turned in a phone and told the young woman about it she said, "well maybe that's why I have headaches all the time".
Yes that is indeed the case. I don't know what the heck Apple is doing. Like I have said on thus discussion before, I even have trouble on their LCD displays.
Except the IPad Mini 6 is not so bad in terms of aggravating migraines or visual issues, but I do feel the jelly scroll a little, the more I use it. I'm not consciously aware of being bothered by it, but after scrolling a long article I noticed I often feel a bit queasy.
One very very weird thing about my physiology is that when I used to get migraine headaches I found that using Samsung VR would get rid of it. I had a headset assembly that I put my S7 into and played VR games on it. Nobody else in my family or husband's family, except for my husband’s sister, could stand to use that implementation of VR for longer than 5 minutes or they'd get motion sickness. She and I'd take turns in there wandering through haunted houses.
I'm the one who buys her iphones and because she is prone to migraines, I'm hoping the new SE will be based on the XR that's working well for her.
I should have bought her an iPhone 11 when I had the chance, but she is still enjoying her XR, so I didnt want to rock the boat unnecessarily. I was definitely wary of putting her through what we all have been through with these things. But she's due for an upgrade eventually.

Well, it finally happened......used my 7 Plus all day yesterday with no issues. Docked it for the night then shortly afterward I pressed the power button to see the time. Nothing, the screen remained black. Picked it up and tried to power on/reset but the phone is dead. It had 95% battery when I docked it and plugging in a power supply or hooking up to my computer at 1:30 am today did nothing. Panic, this is my morning alarm, everything I do is on this phone. IT'S 1:30 AM - I HAVE TO GET UP A 6 AM!!!!
This morning when I arrived in the office I'm forced to order an SE 2022 for pickup this afternoon (hopefully). Couldn't order using my credit card as it needed me to approve via the banking app on my phone, so I used paypal. 🤦♂️
So I'm on my desktop - Apple account talks of sending me an email - well I cannot log in to my email because of two-step authentication, which wants me to either use the app (can't), receive a text (nope), or get the code sent to my other email address. I cannot log in to my other email address for the same reasons above! Stuck in a loop......
I cannot log in to PayPal due to two-step authentication.
I cannot login to iMessage on my work iMac to get codes as it wants me to verify via my phone.
Cannot get password logins for other sites from 1Password as it wants a "Secret Key" that I need to get from the app.
This has been a real eye-opener. My life, logins, and money accounts are locked into my iPhone, and that's scary + stressful. So I need to own two phones now?
Why my 7 Plus died so instantly will remain a mystery I think as I'm not wanting to visit the "Genuis" bar during December as the shops are so busy and this is a stressful work period. Kinda feels like I will be throwing good money away to address the issue which must be significant as the phone doesn't respond to anything.
Already I'm strongly leaning to order a refurbished 8 Plus from Amazon as the SE is so small, but the reviews are so mixed - its very possible to get a scratched-up device with an 80% or less battery. 🤔

That sounds like chaos Jimmy. Sorry to hear that. If I remember correctly, you’d be open to an 11 but can’t find one in the UK, correct? They seem very hard to come by. How unfortunate that you had such a catastrophic failure and I can only imagine how stressful that is to try to get your digital life back online. Good luck to you!

There’s another thread here on MR describing your exact same nightmare with Two Factor Authentication when the primary phone is inop. It’s a REALLY bad system that was never thought through- as you experienced.
Anyone with sense should turn THAT nightmare-in-the-making off.
I assume you’ve got a backup of your iPhone 7 data, so now it’s just a matter of waiting to get a replacement phone to copy it to.
I’m a STALWART proponent of everyone having a backup fully functional older iPhone for situations exactly like this. An older phone for a backup is cheap and the insurance it provides when a disaster like this occurs is priceless.

Yes I have a desktop backup so restoring to the SE 2022 now. Already ready to jump on 11 I’ve seen is available. Got 6hrs to decide for Sunday delivery (pressure). Perhaps I should own both after todays experience…..
Now I have to pump out more cash for an iPad as using this tiny phone like my 7 Plus is not an option 😑

I have both an 11, which is my primary phone, and then a 2020 SE. As now I see it mentioned, it has been reassuring to have a back up iPhone.

Oh goodness I'm sorry you're going through all of this. Yeah I'm locked in with Samsung due to 2 FA. I have it set so I theoretically should be able to authenticate myself into my Samsung account via a non Samsung phone, but it refuses to work! However, Samsung phones have saved my bacon often enough from iOS snafus that I probably will keep on having one around.

I have a 13 mini and iPad 6 mini. Neither bothers my eyes, and they complement each other well as mobile devices when I don't want to lug around my laptops (I tend to collect them due to work).

Positive report: it has been more than 2 weeks since my last post. I have been able to adjust to the iPhone 14 with no symptoms at all. I definitely at the first two weeks had slight dizziness and headaches, but way better than 14 Pro. Hope everyone who decided try the regular 14/14 plus with the extended return period, will be able to adjust to the screen as well.
Recap: 11 Pro gave me bad headache and the weird tension at my temples anytime I looked at the screen, returned within 14 days. I tried a few regular 12/13 in between for a few minutes to max 20 minutes each, overall okay but they were never as comfortable as my old 11. With 14 pro the headache wasn't severe, but the dizziness and head fullness was unbearable, returned within 14 days.
Oh btw the setting on my iPhone 14:
Light appearance;
auto-brightness(but I keep it over 55-60% at least);
True Tone Off;
Reduce White Point at 45%;
Require attention for Face ID On;
Attention Aware Features Off;
Reduce Motion Off.

An update on the iPhone 14 Plus experience: I'm going back to the 11
Having said that, the 14 Plus has been the best Apple OLED device I have used so far, and it has given me significantly fewer, and less severe symptoms. I probably could have kept it, but since I did have tired/itchy more than usual, I decided to not give go on with it. Also, as I mentioned before, I started using it while I wasn't feeling great with headaches, so it's perhaps not as clear cut a case of causation.
As @nadiamo mentioned, I probably would have gotten used to it more over time.
However: Going back to the 11, everything just generally feels better and more comfortable.
Shame, as I really enjoyed the 14 Plus, and its bigger screen; my hope is that Apple release an updated XR/11 based SE next year, rather than 2024, and if they were to release a SE and SE Plus, with LCD, I'd definitely go for the Plus.

Have woken today to the usual feelings I've experienced using OLED iPhones after one evening with the SE 22. Temple tension, frontal headache, backs of my eyes feel like they are being pinched. I have to own a phone right now, and if the SE is going to make me feel this way then I might as well return it and get a flagship OLED iphone and benefit from its improvements over the SE. I just have to accept searing eye pain and headaches as clearly I cannot avoid it. Guess I'm temporal dithering sensitive and PWM has nothing to do with it.

Maybe the 11 will work if you can get one? I almost traded in my 2020 SE for a 2022 SE just to feature proof but I’m thinking that I need to probably hold onto my 11 and 2020 version of the SE. I’ve never tried the latest version of the SE but it seems like more than a few people here are reacting to it. What a shame.

One thing I noticed after I stopped using the 14 and went back to the 11, is I don’t have to constantly adjust anything. With the 14 I was always dealing with brightness or switching from dark mode to light mode, messing with RWP, switching wallpapers because they were bugging me etc.
With the 11, it’s like it’s supposed to be, you set it and it’s pretty much done and it works it almost all situations. Every once in a while I tweak something but it’s not the constant fidgeting I have to do with the Apple OLED displays.
