So, as I see it from my research - the best bet in the Android space is down to two LCD phones (build, screen, reasonable processor and ram, stereo speakers, software updates) :-

Galaxy XCover7 Pro

Motorola G75

Am I missing any other options?

If software updates are important scratch Motorola from your short list!

Be aware the Moto camera is truly abysmal. It’s the biggest problem I have with the Razr.

I came up with a similar choice but good to hear from those in the know.

The problem I have now is finding anyone who has used these phones and is in a good place.

There is very little chat about the Galaxy XCover7 Pro, likely because it is an enterprise device.

The Moto G75 has equal negative and positive comments. Currently, Amazon UK doesn't have stock of the Black model until the end of the month (sold by them directly as I need a solid returns option).

The Oppo A5 Pro doesn't appear to be available from a big box retailer in the UK with a safe returns policy.

At this point I'm considering a G75 order and should this fail, I'll try the Samsung. The Samsung spec looks a little stronger with the newer processor, but more expensive at £503. The Moto, should it work for me, could be nicely paired with the new Legion 8" gen 4 tablet and then a Thinkpad down the line.....🤞

There are black/Charcoal G75's on amazon now, 7 of them apparently!

I appreciate it’s a very personal thing re what affects someone, but for reference I haven’t been able to use any OLED phone (not just Apple, I have even tried various Honor ones), plus whatever Apple did with iOS 16 meant I was unable to use even a previously fine iPhone 8. I have however been using the Moto G75 without issue for a few months now.

Disappointed to hear about the new MacBooks. I was thinking about picking one up. Various iPhones give me problems. I believe it was the iPhone 12 Pro Max that introduced me to PWM. iPhone 13,14,15s was fine. iPhone 16 is by far the worst for me. I felt sick immediate after opening it up.

guys see the image below if I look at it for a few seconds and look away I get an image on the wall for a flash of a second but reverse ( as in a white text ) of the word show….
You're experiencing visual image retention. It comes with age for everyone eventually. Its not caused by iPhone usage.

This whole situation has been incredibly frustrating. Over the past 4 years, I’ve tried every iPhone and iPad model multiple times each hoping to find one that works for me. I know about the display lottery, so I gave each device a fair shot. Out of all of them, the iPhone 16 Plus was by far the best. Unlike the others, where my eyes couldn’t even focus properly on the screen, the 16 Plus looked incredibly sharp and clear it honestly blew me away. Unfortunately, despite that I still experienced the usual PWM symptoms within just a few minutes of use. Most recently, I tried the iPhone 16e, but like with the other models, my eyes just couldn’t focus properly on the display and had the typical PWM symptoms. What’s weird to me is that I used the iPhone X for over 3 years without any issues. Then I got COVID and shortly after switched to the 13 Pro Max, which I was fine with for about 2 months until suddenly I couldn’t use it without getting dizzy. After that, I couldn’t even go back to using my iPhone X or any device with PWM. So now I’m left wondering: did COVID somehow trigger this PWM sensitivity, or is it just a coincidence?

For me at least some of this started pre-COVID because I first realized I had this problem when I bought the iPhone X and got sick immediately after I started using it. Some of the Apple LCD screens started to be bad for me a little after that as well. iPad Pro's after the first generation weren't great for me and I remember not liked the iPhone XR when I looked at one. But I didn't give it much thought since I had no issues with phones such as the 7, SE2, SE3 etc. (I do now though if any of those devices are on a recent version of iOS. Seems like anything beyond iOS 16.1.1 or any update on older devices that is more recent (for example iOS 15.8.1 made my iPhone 7 unusable despite it "only" being what looks like a security update). But interestingly that update on my iPhone 7 a few weeks after I had COVID the second time so it's possible I'm attributing the change to the wrong thing.

I've seen countless doctors about this issue. Like many of us here, nobody has been able to find anything wrong or has been really familiar with the problem. But I've had a few different doctors/physical therapists ask me if this started after COVID because it reminded them of symptoms they have seen people develop after having COVID. So that's definitely something worth looking into. I feel like I saw someone post somewhere recently that they had seen screen/light issues being discussed on a long COVID forum. I'll see if I can find that.

I should also add that for a while I though my issues were all related to PWM but now I realized there is something more. The fact that software updates can render certain previously "safe" devices bad for me makes me think it's something else in some (all?) cases. For your iPhone X is it possible when you went back to it that it was on a different iOS?

All that being said I've also seen people post that when they get symptoms from a "bad" device they also can't look at previously "safe" devices. Sometimes for a few days and sometimes permanently.

I ve been testing AGAIN many iPhones the last months like 12 pro, 14, 16, 16e and 14 pro. By far 16 was the best in terms of symptoms. What i ve been doing is having 2 iPhones….. when i scroll for long periods on the phone i use iPhone 11….. and i keep iPhone 16 for quick interactions, phone calls etc……

I completely know not one size fits all but I am looking at a new ipad.

Is there one out there most likely to work with us? Has the best screen technology for us?

Appreciate the answer may be in the history of this thread but hoping someone with recent experience may be able to shed some light.

Dont mind going for a slightly older model if needs be.

TIA

its likely that if a person used an old iPhone (iPhone 6 Plus for example) for 12 years straight with no software updates to change anything - they would still very likely develop nervous system problems - just from using any device.

My suspicion is that a lot of people are experiencing nervous system burnout due to using these gadgets - any gadget, for so many years.

If anyone interested the most powerful LCD was just released from Samsung with a snapdragon gen 3. It’s the X cover 7 pro. A Reddit user tested it and says it’s comfortable.

Also to add: I accidentally found a sealed iPhone 11 and instantly made the purchase. That thing is flying…..no joke. That brand new 100% battery it seems it makes a difference compared to my old iPhone 11 with even a 3 month old battery from ifixit. If you found a sealed 11 don’t miss the opportunity. I feel like I could get 2 more years of usage……

Yes, COVID triggered flicker sensitivity for me. I had no issues prior to being infected in 2022. In fact I actually performed in and edited a music video with strobe lights for hours during the pandemic. No symptoms. This is very common for those of us with Long COVID.

Very common to have screen, light, and flicker sensitivity if you have Long COVID or ME/CFS. I’ve started asking people in the various communities if their issues started after COVID and I’d say for the majority it’s yes.

That being said I would have described myself as somewhat sensitive prior to the pandemic. For example, I briefly owned the iMac Pro in 2018 and hated the thing. Had no idea why back then but I now know it had PWM. Also wasn’t a fan of the iPhone X. I assumed it was a blue light thing because that’s what everyone thinks. I don’t believe we are unique in that we are the only ones affected - I think most people are affected by PWM and dithering it’s just that they write it off as blue light or using the device too much. My proof in that argument is that when those of us with these extreme sensitivities find a good screen we can use it for many hours with no symptoms.

So I do believe COVID or other infections that affect the brain (COVID crosses the blood brain barrier) can trigger or worsen an underlying sensitivity. I got reinfected last summer and could no longer use my iMac 2019 that had been on MacOS Mojave with no updates of any kind since I purchased it. The only change was I got COVID again and could no longer tolerate the built-in FRC gray color flicker on the device. At least after my first infection I could use it with SwitchResX disabling GPU dithering.

PWM is not the only problem. What matters is the frequency, modulation depth, and waveform of that flicker whether it be PWM or dithering. It’s why some of us, myself included, can use some OLED iPhones on certain iOS versions.

This is a complicated problem but not an unsolvable one. If you read posts from the relevant online communities you will see many more have been affected since the M4 Macs and the communities are growing. This problem is worsening because of poor quality control and an over reliance on dithering and PWM to manage colors, brightness, and battery life. Apple is aware - look at a recent post on LEDstrain - an Apple tech has the same problem with the new Macs and issued a member a refund 2 months after his purchase because of it!

We are not pariahs but rather the canaries in the coal mine. This is a serious health issue affecting everyone, it’s just a matter of how badly you are affected. Just look at the massive issues with test scores and attention in the youngest generations. We are seeing studies begin to focus on this and I would not be surprised if these techniques play a role.

Xcover 8 pro is due out this year, possibly announced very soon according to some websites.

Hopefully with a better battery life and expandable memory (and hopefully still LCD)

The Galaxy XCover7 Pro has just been released, so how can Version 8 be coming this year?

Doctors follow their protocols that don't say anything about PWM or new tech. The only thing they care about is prescribing you glasses. I doubt they are even allowed to say what they actually think these days.

No idea, just from reading up on the Cover7, few outlets saying that it was a stop gap release until the 8 came out a year later.

Never know what to believe with clickbait articles tbh.

The closest I've seen a medical professional potentially understand a medical cause of "this issue" was informed speculation that it *may* be related to photosensitive epilepsy. But that is it's own can of worms.

If this issue has taught me anything it's that from a technical perspective, an issue will have to get "bad enough" and reach critical mass before manufacturers potentially do something about it. There was some thinking in the distant past that Apple was being more conservative in delaying the introduction of OLED displays in their products to potentially do something to mitigate the flicker problems, but I certainly remember the iPhone X like it was yesterday. I think Apple has done certain changes from generation to generation to potentially alter this issue, but I wouldn't call them an outright solution.
