OK, downloaded the Xcode project and... it's a binary wrapped in enough barebones code to get it to compile.

Honestly, I'm a little creeped out. I get that the app is patent-pending and they've got some trade secrets to keep secret and all that, but the whole reason I trust Xcode side loading versus jailbreaking is so I can make a cursory audit of the app and make sure it's not phoning home or doing anything creepy. This is especially true for an app that can only exist using private APIs. Call me paranoid, but one of the reasons I use my phone as much as I do is because I have that reasonable expectation of privacy/safety from key loggers and the like.

All that to say, how safe is installing this? Anyone have any experience?
By installing it through Xcode you have as much security as downloading any App Store app as long as you are not jailbroken. If there is a vulnerability then yeah any app even from the App Store can take advantage.

I did download this to have as a backup and I downloaded it not from the 3rd part link macrurmors hsed but the official website.

--------

Macrumors you should modify the link to make you go to the official website download. Idk why you used a 3rd party app link hoster tbh.

Apple could just make a dark mode like on OS X and turn it on based on time of day. Solved.
I think that's a great idea, although it wouldn't address the color temperature issue.

F.lux stops your screen from pumping out light way up in the blue end of the spectrum, and that's the light that jacks up your circadian rhythms late at night.

Honest question, what are those reasons?

Because right now I don't see the need to jailbreak anymore.
honest answer:
Productivity:
- you can make the iPad be compatible with external usb drives
- you can buy iFile, which gives iOS a real filesystem
- you can have trackpad support
- you can build code on the devices (forbidden by app store rules)
- you can costumize control center
- you can install whatsapp (or any other iPhone only app) on an iPad

If you are into games:
- you can use a ps4 controller, which is much better than the MFI ones. You can use any bluetooth controller you already have. So that's 50$ less to spend and a better experience.
- you can install emulators

This are just a few examples.

Personally I don't feel the need to jailbreak my iPhone (now that f.lux is here) but I do feel the need to jailbreak my iPad. Out of the box is FAR too limited. Even more with the iPad Pro.

you obviously have zero understanding of jailbreaking if you think it's about "silly themes". not worth getting in to this with you.
I used to jailbreak my 4S since iOS 5 to install things like iFile, NC Settings, fasten animations, hide my carrier name, theme, f.lux, who can forget Jellylock, make Camera+ my default camera app... I can go on. Thing is, jailbreak is not really useful anymore in my opinion.

Is anyone else having trouble finding the Targets menu or whatever the steps are talking about? I can't seem to find it in Xcode 7.1.1.
See this?

Hit the box there with the left column shown and it'll expand:

Again, those are features of apps on cydia. Cydia is the primary feature of jailbreaking. Why do you need to jailbreak to get cydia, if you can just side-load it? Cydia's build tools will need some changes to allow it, but there's no technical reason it can't work now.

How drastically does this (side loaded f.lux app) affect battery life? How often will it need to send notifications as it runs in the background to function?

I use f.lux on my macbook as well as all the Windows machines in the house and I love it.

P.S. I have read the FAQ (http://justgetflux.com/sideload/) and am still wondering.

What I want is an OS feature that turns off (or, optionally, greatly dims) the green and blue pixels. Leaving only red, night-vision-safe for hikes and astronomy!
