Everyone is missing the forrest for the trees. In the Reddit video the first brother (in green shirt) has a sizable mole on his right cheek. The other brother does NOT have a mole on his right cheek.

WTF?! If a mole isn't a facial feature that Apple is tracking, what the hell is the point of Face ID in the first place?

If these brothers were absolutely identical in every respect EXCEPT for that mole, the phone should NOT unlock for both of them, period. If that Reddit video isn't faked (switched iPhone X while out of view), then this is a major fail on Apple's part. No freaking mole recognition?!

Mark

First off, unless that mole protrudes it will not be detected. Second, why don't you know this? Do you still not understand how this tech works even though you're obviously so critical of it?

so you’re saying it will learn to reject the brothers face after it has already accepted it and likely added it to its database of slight variables?

Seriously, read the article and you will realize why people (very few) are able to fool the system within such a short time.

Yep, to the point when only the brother can unlock it and the owner can’t.

Genius.

Magical. Sort of Face/off kind of stuff.

This sort of stuff was bound to happen as everyone is testing the hell out of it! I'll bet YouTube will be flooded with similar videos....

Apple always said that if someone shared a close family resemblance that the probability is lower. And let's not forget. This video was made with the phone being just set up. And Face ID did not unlock instantly. So neural engine probably thought at the start it was someone else, but as they resemble each other and the neural network did not get to learn the face over any period of time, it probably assumed that they were the same person.

Face ID will can fail if there is a close family resemblance and Apple has always said that. And I think this will be a non issue after a couple of days and several dozen unlocks from the same person. Because then the neural engine will have trained so much that it will be able to distinguish between the two.

Sounds very plausible.

If you stop and think about this. One could actually see quite the opposite could be the case.

Consider this:

So you register your exact face NOW, and it records an exact view/measurement of your face right now.
That COULD be THE most accurate version of you it can ever have.

If we feel it's accepting of changes over time, such as.
You wear sunglasses or don't
You grow your hair long or shave it.
You wear a scarf or don't
You apply makeup/face jewellery or don't

To allow for these changes, and accept the variations, it will need to slacken off from it's original clean single scan of your face, and need to accept more variations of your face due to the items I've listed or perhaps more.

So in effect the first clean scan could be THE most secure.

Did you consider that it can become more accurate and more lax at the same time? Because I'm pretty sure that would be the goal.

Also consider that every time these people unlock the phone successfully with each other's face, it's now learning to accept both of those facial maps. Just by testing and proving this they are increasing the accuracy for both faces.

A mole or glasses are not facial features. Facial features include cheekbones, the distance between your eyes and or ears, distance between forehead, cheekbones, chin, nose, eyes, ears, etc. Anything that 'could' be used as a disguise would not qualify as a 'facial identifier'. I could easily add a mole or glasses. A mustache, fake teeth, even the color of my eyes. It's going to be difficult to manipulate bone structure.

Can we wait for the validity of these videos and claims BEFORE we make accusations?

To be fair:
1. My brother is not the person I'm worried about stealing my phone and being able to access it.
2. These two are so alike, I'm still not sure they're not identical twins. I look a lot like my brother, but if the similarity between these two is what it takes, he has no chance of getting into my phone. These guys seriously look like the exact same person, before and after having their first kid.

Because this is a security issue - I hope there is followup by Apple on this article to explain how/why face id failed in this case. Lots of folks have relatives who look similar, and wear similar glasses. It might be interesting if we could see these guys illustrate the same failure with several different iPhone X devices. Perhaps this particular phone is defective, which is also problematical from a quality control standpoint, but not as disastrous as consistent face id failure across all phones with the technology implemented.

They were already pretty clear about this particular issue in both the keynote and in subsequent product support notes. They don’t need to explain any further - these are brothers who look quite similar. What more do you want?

Apple Defense Force in full swing I see. A fail is a fail. No matter how you spin it.
Demonstrating documented expected behavior isn’t a fail. It’s validation.

What are you talking about? All of those things are facial features, and are used as identifiers (with the exception of teeth) in most other devices that have "inferior" facial recognition.

I beleive the faceid tech uses face contours not based on moles, mustaches or lack of hair.

Does not look like real use case, though.

People are going to be disabling face id and just using passcodes in a few weeks. Sad.

Why would that happen?

Most
people are intelligent and know that after two (I think that's the number) failed recognition attempts the phone requires a passcode. Think about it. And the probability of a random person looking just like you being able to get in.

Re read my post. I state that a mole or glasses are NOT facial identifiers and go on to give what a facial identifier is.

Trying to keep a conversation grounded in reality without flying off into believing every thing you see due to confirmation bias is not defending. As an engineer, the sheer stupidity of some people forces me to respond.

Forget the two similar looking brothers in the Reddit video. This is all you need to see (as linked previously by others):

Those two half-brothers aren't anywhere NEAR similar enough in appearance or age that Face ID should unlock for both. PERIOD.

It's FIVE failed attempts, not two.

Haven't we already seen this in this thread multiple times? I believe we've already gone over many times how this could happen.

OK, who cares, nothing is 100%. Why is it that society must always try to make something fail or find fault? Why can't we try to find the positive in things in life and not usually always trying to find the negative.

You ask: Why is it that society must always try to make something fail or find fault?
Answer: Firstly it has nothing to do with "society"! People do this because that's how improvements are made!! Determining flaws and weaknesses are a MASSIVE part of IT/technology/engineering industries and other industries. If we choose to flippantly turn a blind eye to these things then the world would be in a complete and utter mess and there would be no progress.

This is a SECOND video with the two half-brothers. A lot of people assumed it was the same one posted. But, yes, it was previously linked. Too few people realized it was a SECOND video.

Does not look like real use case, though.

That's what I'm saying, what these people are doing is essentially creating a map of two faces in the database that is going to start recognizing them both more and more accurately.

Funny, I saw both of those videos further back in the thread but you've posted it again. And again, pay attention to what is being said...

LOL. All I can really do is laugh, sorry. A much younger brother unlocks his older brothers phone with his face. C'mon Apple!
