Google Maps made default? Sure why not, as long as they don't go back to the old version lol. Really Google brought this on themselves, the old app was beyond substandard.

More Facebook integration? No thanks :/

All CEOs of their company would like iOS to feature their company more. Even Pepsi which as nothing to do with smart phones would like that. It's advertisement for their company that's essentially "free."

"They would like Apple to feature them more prominently on iOS."

Of course they would.

I'd like Apple to show me Jony's secret lab. CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT WE WANT, CAN WE?

But if you try sometimes... :D

Seriously though, I like some of the concepts that Facebook is proposing, but I don't want more Facebook integration with my phone UNLESS it's done by Apple engineers, not Facebook coders. Their app (even the update I downloaded today) continues to be buggy and abysmally slow.

Apple could maybe do well to take notes. For example, the green text message notification bubble on my home screen could include my user picture icon for whoever is texting me...

Google is like the crazy girl that's trying to make her ex (Apple) jealous by hooking up with her new boyfriend (FB) in public. Gross.

Yea, this is just getting stupid. Ironic part is that outside of the tech crowd, I don't think anybody knows or cares about 'Chat heads' and I'm a huge FB user. Also, what benefit is there for Apple to allow those 2 guys to integrate even deeper? That's like Apple saying, we want Google to install Safari as the native web browser. Not going to happen.

Google is starting to piss me off more and more. They say 'do no evil' but they are getting more cocky and evil (by spreading their tentacles in everything) as each day goes on.

It's also ironic that the two are sitting next to each other, all warm and fuzzy when the truth is, FB only wants to use Android to fork it and use it for their own gains while Google+ is here to take on Facebook

A reporter ACTUALLY doing their job and exposing these asses. "We'd like to work more with them"... Reporter: "Did you ask Apple?" FB "Well uh.. umm.. we know the product cycle and *blah blah blah*"

Take your head out your ass and stop flinging your **** around.. Schmidt you too

I would not mind if Apple made iMessage/SMS have the option of expressing itself like Chat Heads and then letting Facebook plug into that as yet another messaging provider.

However, if Apple wants to do that, it would be Apple who owned the code and it would be Apple who decided which third-party developers could plug into that messaging API.

Apple designed the previous app with data from Google. If it was substandard, Apple designed it that way. Had Google provided the data for turn by turn, or flyover, Apple would still likely repeat their screw up with Maps.

What a bunch of tools. iOS doesn't need any more products from them, we have the option to use their apps already, it's suposed to be up to the end user.

There is no need to be on iOS when they have their poor clone OS already for spamming with crap software etc

Just said this on modmyi but I'll post it here because it's relevant.

Referring to Google wanting their Maps as default iOS maps:
Yeah I'm sure they would, so they can put Apple in another corner somewhere in the future. Apple didn't just stop using Google maps simply because they felt like it. Google was not allowing basic features like turn-by-turn. Apple needs to continue where it's at with their maps and just keep improving it. Too little too late Schmidt...

You probably know this, but the old app was written by Apple, but used Google data on the backend. The agreement with Google prevented Apple from getting access to vector-based maps and prevented them from enabling turn-by-turn directions (their license did not permit it). So while it was Apple's app, it was Google who refused to let Apple improve it because they would not renegotiate licensing unless they got to put advertisements and have more access to user location data. Apple refused to concede on those points, so they did what they had to do. They made their own backend maps data.

So far Apple Maps has been great for me and it just keeps getting better. I think the big loser in all of this will be Google. Very very few people ditched their iOS devices because of Apple Maps, but 98% of them ditched Google Maps after upgrading to iOS 6. I have downloaded the Google Maps app and have opened it two or three times since the day it was released. The reason is that Apple Maps serves me just fine (I don't use public transit). On the two occasions I had trouble finding a POI in Apple Maps, trying the same search in Google Maps also failed to find the POI. It turns out I was spelling it wrong and neither could find it.

So who loses out on the whole maps switch? iOS users can now use either or both maps products. Both are free, but only one is free of advertising. Apple certainly did not lose. It was Google who lost out. They have lost out on millions of devices with extremely active users no longer feeding them location data and search data.

Great job by MR to create a link bait article sure to start some more flame wars. Of course the title of the article doesn't even accurately represent what either exec said.

God I hate that beady eyed Eric Schmidt and his Google sheep disciples.

Schmidt and Rubin are my two least favorite Google execs. Whenever either speaks I have to brace myself to hear a bunch of garbage. Sergey Brin is climbing the charts fast with every time I see him wearing those dorky Google Glasses. Maybe one day they will miniaturize Google Glass enough to make it invisible, but who wants to look like this?

But then again, anybody who would do this to a Tesla Model S probably doesn't care about looking like a dork:

sorry, we'll go back to posting about patent lawsuits!

rofl!

Add me to that list. I wish Apple would feature my apps more prominently in iOS too.

Exactly. Well said. What kills me about these CEOs, and of this article in general, is that it takes the tone of Apple being a huge bully, not letting the other kids play in the park. It seems very well forgotten by the tone of these whole topic that Google and Apple at the end of the day are their own biggest competitor. Facebook is sort of neutral....actually a bigger foe for Google than Apple, based on business model.

At the end of the day, these guys compete. It's like saying..."Boy I'd love some free exposure from my biggest competitor."

*Edit*: Facebook is Googles potentially biggest foe....assuming Facebook finds growth in a market that is slowly starting to hate them while gaining virturally no new ground.

I never understood the meltdown about Apple maps...they have ALWAYS worked great for me. I live in Texas and go to some "in the middle of nowhere" places and they have done their job for me. Have they led me other places sometimes? Yes, but Google maps have done the same thing.

The meltdown has more to do with limited POI (points of interest) database and missing streets (particularly outside US) than accuracy of addresses.

ChatHeads will ruin gaming and video and maps and web surfing ... and everything else now that I stop to think about it. :)

Can Apple have cake and eat it too?

Of course Apple has some unique features found only on iOS, but would giving Google and FB the user option of more visibility make iOS more popular?

iOS can play with everyone, Android cannot.

Just sayin.
