Note that to turn Apple's advertising tracking off it isn't in that "Privacy > Tracking" section. It's hidden at the bottom of Privacy.

Apple talk a good game but couldn't resist hiding their own tracking rather than bundling it in with everyone else's.

Says a lot.
It's another setting that belongs in Privacy -> Tracking. That what it says.

Apple asks you up front and separately when you set up your device if you want to allow tracking. ATT handles the companies that don't even give you the option with their services.

Surely this won't spawn a new round of phishing scams asking users to provide their personal info to help keep these services free...

I didn't mind ads when they served them related to the site you were visiting and not some creepy profile they're keeping on you.

Oh you're on MacRumors? Might be interested in this Thunderbolt Dock from X company

Oh you're on a Pet website? Have a look at these cool dog treats

etc

etc
The difference is that on MR you don't get personalized ads. You get generalized ads related to tech. Not.

It still amazes me that people want things for free but then complain about how much free costs.
Social media platforms isn’t anything important tho. If its free- fine. If I have to pay- Nah, it’s nothing worth paying for

I still have yet to have Facebook even ask me if I want to allow tracking or any other app for that matter.
Me neither. I'm suspecting one of two things:
  • The app hasn't requested the information yet. This prompt only shows up when the information is being requested, much like how you get the prompt only when an app attempts to access your location, contacts, photos, etc. for the first time.
  • I have ad tracking and Off-Facebook Activity disabled within the Facebook app/settings itself. Going along with my first statement, I probably won't see the prompt since they shouldn't be requesting anything based on those settings.

Good luck with that.
Yeah this is a straight up Hustle!

"This is a throw-down, a showdown, Hell no I can't slow down, it's gonna go.."
No. Nope. Not going to happen.
Charge for FB and Insta? OK, go ahead and watch your platform turn into a ghost town.
Actually

If FB and IG charged for their services (reasonably and all inclusive), WITHOUT the data mining or PAYING users for being data mined ... that could be worthwhile to more than 60% (wild guess) whom still use both platforms

It's more so not knowing WHAT the real cost is. Therein lies the rub.

If the majority of users knew you'd see them not giving up their data like a 2 dollar night crawler on a street corner giving up a cookie for every John (data collection agency, etc) that comes around for free.

This might not be a popular opinion here, but I will gladly pay for an ad-free Facebook that doesn’t attempt to facilitate/sell micro changes in my behaviour to the highest bidder, whilst enabling quality connections.

We’ve got a bit of a paradox as consumers of digital services. We don’t want to pay for them (when we happily pay for other services) and at the same time, we don’t want the fallout of social media companies turning us into the product.

At the end of the day though, when it comes to Facebook, it’s not just about whether one would be willing to pay for it or not, it’s that I do not fundamentally trust the company or its leadership. So even if they said they were willing to offer the service I want for a fee, I won’t trust Zuckerberg to not make underhanded attempts to make more money off us and screw us over to his selfish gain.

Oh, and for what it’s worth, that threat of ‘give us your data or Facebook won’t be free anymore’ is a rotten move.

Facebook charging individuals would be like placing a lead brick onto a house of cards.

I still have not had a single app, FB included, ask me if I want to allow tracking, and I have not seen this pop-up. I do not understand this.

Love this move by FB / IG. Apple’s ios14 has been a disaster for many a small business, based on misinformation and fear mongering. If FB and IG can pull back some of those users who’ve been duped into switching it off, then I’m all for it.

Apple should pull their app from the app store until that message is removed. It is a misleading advertisement trying to get user to enable tracking with a threat of having to pay for the service.
