The thing is is if Facebook and Instagram charged money they’d still track you everywhere and keep a profile.
Facebook charges businesses if they want to put ads on the Facebook network, and the price goes to premium for a more "targeted" placement. The users are the product. So Facebook literally is tryi g to double dip, asking mo ey from advertisers and users.

Until Facebook there has never been a database on humanity that knows so much about so many - without tracking across apps/platforms.
Facebook knows who my friends are, relatives, interests, likes, dislikes, relationship status and sexual inclination, what video I'll watch and what I won't. It has a market place so it also knows what I search for, buy and have an interest in there too. On top of that it can snoop in messages I send on it's IM platforms (yes, plural - whatsapp)
Google would give anything to get that info, as would Amazon.
You're suggesting that they can't make billion $ profits with all that because we refuse to let them follow us around like a stalker across the entire digital world?

Well I wasn’t suggesting all of that, lol! But it’s basically inevitable isn’t it? “The Powers That Be” (greed, capitalism, governments, whatever _____) have decided that we are complacent enough that if Facebook ever went away along with their data…then there are already and would continue to be others. Society has shown they don’t care, as a whole, so companies have precedent.

Basically I believe the only way to avoid it would be to literally not use the internet, for anything, and not even send text messages. Only then are you basically safe. Doesn’t anyone remember Snowden suggesting to cover the holes of your mic and webcam on laptops and cellphones? And in a photo from several years ago while at his office headquarters Zuckerberg is in a selfie pic for Instagram and in the background you can see his workstation computer has the holes covered taped over.

If Zuckerberg is doing that…

If I'm tracked... not the end of the world, but I would prefer if they ask permission first. And I will always say no.

If that means I can't have facebook, oh well. I don't really use it much anyway.

Facebook is welcome to charge a fee. Just as I'm welcome to stop using it. The present price represents my opinion of the value I get from Facebook.

Paying Facebook to sell your personal information... Let that sink in for a minute.

I'll bet that 80% or more of their addicts would sign up for that.

It is truly astonishing how mind-numbed social media has made today's society. Anything for a click or a like or an emoji...

You know, the thing is, I kinda like the idea of being a paying customer rather than part of the product. I've been happily paying for Netflix every month in exchange for what I feel is a quality product where I don't feel like I'm what's being sold.
Netflix spent years perfecting one of the best algorithms to capture user patterns and preferences, and then the data, rather we are sold to producers to inform their cinematic decision making. It doesn't stop there: We pay Netflix to sell our data to other providers (think clothiers, design firms, intelligence aggregators, manufacturers, the list goes on). There is very little daylight between them and FB.

FB is a social illness of pandemic proportions. It needs to go. Charge for all I care.
Problem is, even politicians know that Facebook is a great medium to manipulate the public consciousness, so I’m sure Facebook will be one of those “too big to fail.” There will be enough actors wanting to keep Facebook to spread their stuff to let anything happen.

Clicking “nope” everytime that balloon pops up as become a new sort of joy for me since updating to 14.5.

Am I the only member here who never use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Flickr, Pinterest, Tiktok, WhatsApp and any other social media sites. You won’t find picture of me anywhere on the internet. They don’t exist. Heck, I don‘t even own a smartphone.
No, you aren't. I've done some searches for my name (the spelling of my first name is less common) and don't pop up. I have had iPhones since the 3G, though.

I pay for YT Premium as I watch more quality content there than NF. Plus the music and ‘keep playing while minimized’, that’s all cool. Most my YT watching is on ATV so the no ads is really a thing there. However, paying for FB? Even with how deep I am in it? No. I have other ways to do what I do there. No.

Time to get real Facebook and Instagram. I'm not enabling ATT Tracking. You will still make tons of money even if we all keep ATT tracking turned off. Charge for Facebook and Instagram? Most of us will move on and go elsewhere.
I was just listening to the latest episode of the Vergecast earlier today and they were discussing how this actually amounts to a minuscule fraction of Facebook’s revenue.
