This makes sense for twitter due to the nature of how that platform works and why people use it.

For Facebook? Completely laughable model. Facebook is almost as much of a baron wasteland as MySpace became near the end. Zuck has no idea what he's doing.

Zuckerberg is a total moron. He had a chance to win over all of these people who left Twitter. Instead, he’s doing this. He’s completely out of touch with humanity and the real world. Must give back to the shareholders. Must create a return. This billionaire man boy is a jackass. I will not give them a cent.

And for those who tout “free speech” on Twitter, read the news. Musk is an autocrat who does NOT support free speech. There is no critical thinking amongst his acolytes.

If I were Zuckerberg I would start selling all my facebook stock and calling it a day.

A bit strange to think you can pay for however many months you want, be verified, and then when you decide not to continue, they will (presumably) remove your verified identity badge as if you were who you say you are but no longer are. To have some logical consistency it should be a one-off cost good for life.

Exactly. Just make month one a little more for the verification, and never lose that part even if you cancel.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the weekend announced the upcoming launch of a new "Meta Verified" subscription service that's designed for Facebook users, which will provide verification for $11.99 per month on the web or $14.99 per month on the iPhone or the iPad.

Zuckerberg described Meta Verified as a subscription that lets individuals verify an account with a government ID, get a blue badge, and get "extra impersonation protection" against accounts that are "claiming to be you." It also comes with "direct access to customer support, exclusive stickers, and a news release describing the feature says that it will include "access to increased visibility and reach." A full list of announced features:
  • A verified badge, confirming you're the real you and that your account has been authenticated with a government ID.
  • More protection from impersonation with proactive account monitoring for impersonators who might target people with growing online audiences.
  • Help when you need it with access to a real person for common account issues.
  • Increased visibility and reach with prominence in some areas of the platform- like search, comments and recommendations.
  • Exclusive features to express yourself in unique ways.
The service is "about increasing authenticity and security" across Meta services, and it follows Twitter Blue, Twitter's $8 per month subscription service that provides a blue checkmark and provides access to features like Edit Tweet.

Meta also plans to make the same verification process available on Instagram, but separate subscriptions will be required for each platform, so an individual or business that wants to be verified on both Facebook and Instagram will need to pay separate subscription fees.

Instagram and Facebook are monetized through advertising at the current time, but changes like Apple's App Tracking Transparency can make ads an unreliable revenue stream. Subscription payments will give Facebook a steady monthly income.

Meta Verified will roll out in Australia and New Zealand this week before it expands to additional countries. Meta says that as it tests and learns, there will be no changes to accounts on Instagram and Facebook that were already verified, but the meaning of the verified badge is "expanding."

Normally we pay with our privacy and our data, but with Apple and Government agencies making changes to allow customer's the ability to much more easily limit companies abilities to access to customer's data, and with people's continued distaste for ads, ability to circumvent them, companies will continue to need to find alternate ways to make money, with the obvious answer being to charge people. The challenge of course being people are use to consider these services and features free. I support the idea of charging for new features and benefits, though unfortunately this change simply dilutes the meaning of the blue check. Before a blue check meant a person may have been important, the original, popular, or such. Where is now, at quick glance, a blue check means much less and mostly means it's mostly like not a bot. The traditional blue checkmark essentially becomes replaced with everyone's new yellow checkmark. Once everyone becomes aware of that, and realizes yellow is whats important then the blue check mark becomes mostly irrelevant to users reading on twitter and presumably people will lost the main incentive of getting it.

It seems like Meta stole Elon Musk’s subscription-based business idea. Oh well, what else can you expect? 🤦‍♀️

Instead of this Meta subscription service. Why not work on building an Instagram App for the iPad?
Better yet, lets make our own Social App, one that doesn't have any spammers, haters and non-sense.
One that just works.
