Turn off background app refresh. One of the first things I do on a new iPhone.
That's pretty much useless.... You are crippling functionalities of your phone without solving the issue.
The problem isn't background app refresh

They update app like every week and the app still sux with bugs like that. (Version 63636.7171)

It's about time they rewrote this app to not trick iOS into thinking it's an VoIP. That's the issue. I uninstalled it a couple of weeks back and won't install it until they fix this.

That's what I thought. VoIP..... I'd like to know what information the app is collecting in the "background"

I've already solved the issue. Uninstalled the app and used the Safari browser. No extra drain, content blocker can block junk ads and possibly tracking too, and messenger without installing the app. Win-win-win for me.

Next step is closing the account. Which I think about doing every day.

Facebook is by far the worst thing happened to humanity in the last decade.......

My family lives across an ocean from me, so I use Facebook to keep in touch. It used to be great at that, but now is slow and seemingly buggy. Plus, it keeps 'reminding' me of people I might want to add to contacts. Well, I add contacts when I want to, thank you very much. If the app is confirmed to have been designed to circumvent Apple's rules regarding background processes, then I will de-install it and use a browser with ad blocking etc. I am growing impatient with any form of corporate dishonesty. i guess we'll see.

This problem has existed for a very VERY long time!!! Why all of a sudden the issue is actually getting noticed is beyond me. While FaceBook may be the worst it isn't the only app to drain your battery in background, people need to keep an eye on what they install.

Kudos to Apple for nudging developers in the right direction: environmental awareness. Considering coal energy is still in use in USA, I would be curious to translate this footprint into CO2 emissions...

Just because you are a big developer for a very capable device doesn't mean you should code your apps poorly.

The best solution to this is the permanent solution. Cancel your account and delete the app. Facebook is the new AOL: pretending to be "the internet" while keeping its users from ever venturing onto anything other than other Facebook pages. I can almost promise you that your life will improve if you cancel your Facebook account.

Or maybe this bug that keeps the app always on so they can track everything. Just imagine the microphone or camera randomly turns on without your knowledge. Creepy!

Yeah, something isn't right there. Clearly, a lot of battery is going towards updated the newsfeed in the background. Seems to be consistent among people*, from other posts I've seen here.

Interestingly, the iPhone's Music app also does this. I'm looking at mine right now over 7 days. 1.8 hours screen - 6.9 hours background. What's causing that? I have both Apple Music and background refresh turned off.

*I use the FB app, but I only do quick log in and log out sessions. It's worth mentioning that even with background refresh turned off, I still show 2:1 in terms of screen/background battery usage, which is comparable to my Mail app... interesting.

Well in my settings I only have life 360, downcast and notes - all well behave

Pretty obvious that facebook is being abusing backgrounding for a long time - their engineers aren't that dumb

Facebook is a terrible app in that regard. It uses so much battery it's ridiculous.

Then, to make things worse, if you watch a video in the app, the rest of your phone volume becomes significantly lower. For example, watch a Facebook video, then go to your Music app and start playing a song. Notice how quiet it is. Then force-quit the Facebook app, and watch how much your volume instantly increases. It's the only app that I have ever had this problem with.

Because of these two terrible bugs, I make sure to "close" it every single time I use it.

No, please, don't fix it. Let's try to recover the times when you could go to a good restaurant and enjoy the food without the annoyance of "don't start eating until I take photos for my FB".
