Like the updated iOS icon. Looks good. The UI is also really nice looking. Still hate Facebook though, but I'm glad they went to designers with taste.

What is the advantage of social media over simply having someone's number and texting/calling them? Am I honestly the only person who doesn't care about what happened to everyone I went to school with, pictures/video of what someone's "cute" puppy did last night, or the instant location updates of 500 people slamming at me as "updates"?

You're definitely not the only person. I see a strong negative correlation between Fb usage and having a real life. People with jobs, friends, families, etc., don't care about posting rubbish because they have more important things to do.

Hardly anyone I know uses it any more. It was a novelty that got old quick. The only thing I still do with it is post quick snaps of my travels as it's an efficient way to share photos.

All the people who are saying they don't use FB blah blah, do you guys also go to Justin beiber's page and start saying "I don't like hiss crappy music , yo" and feel 'kewl' about yourselves?

My point is, if you don't like FB don't come to this thread and derail it.

For the people who does use FB messenger, Chat heads is an amazing feature (in Android) and it probably the most innovative feature of any messaging service ever.

In iOS , chat heads don't make any sense though. :(

No, do you?

The problem with your analogy is that most people going to Bieber's website are probably already fans of his music. This site in case you missed it is Macrumors not "Chat heads appreciation and love only rumors.com".

I'm free to post comments and you're free to put me on your ignore list.

See how that works?

100% agree. I'm using an S3 and an iPad 2 at the moment, and this feature just gave another significant edge for Android over iOS.

  • It's by far the most innovative messaging service update in years
  • It works with SMS - not just Facebook messages
  • It allows for excellent multi-tasking of chat - TRUE multi-tasking, with a great UI
  • It's optional to use - if you don't like it, just switch it off

I'm interested to hear some real reasons about why you wouldn't want this incredibly useful functionality on your phone. The fact that you don't use Facebook is completely irrelevant - I primarily use it for SMS.

Edit: I should be clear, SMS integration is not possible on iOS...of course.

"Close Friends"?

What the heck happened to my "Close Friends" list? Why did they bother making me make such a list, only to disable it in the next version?

Odd. After using it for a day, I like the new interface.

This happens with every single FB update.

Every single update on either Android of iOS people b!tch and complain about it for a few days and then it warms up to them.

I don't mind it at all. I do alot of Private messaging on FB and it works well for me.

1) The iOS version is a gimped version and is not as good as the Android version. I'd also like to note, just like most apps recently, the Android version got updated first.

2) I'd rather have the choice to have it and turn it off, than not have it at all

Why don't people understand you can turn things off?!

Speaking of which... I updated app and have Chat Heads now. Don't like it. Can anyone figure out how to turn the feature off and just have chat behave like it did before without the Chat Heads?

If its not there, can anyone who's not fond of it as well send feedback to Facebook to have option to turn it off.

I like the new chat feature and I think it would be awesome if I could do it outside of the app, I also would like a feature like this for iMessage

You can stop it from working globally by going into Settings-->Notifications and unchecking Chat Heads.

For the people who have a missing feature...

My iPhone has chat heads and stickers (has had both since yesterday).

Just updated my iPad which has chat heads but not stickers.

I'm guessing they're updating my UID or something rather than by facebook account

I can think of a couple advantages facebook chat has over sms, iMessage and whatsapp

A) Sending, sent, read notifications (advantage over sms).

B) Cross platform (advantage over iMessage especially since I have friends using at least 3 different platforms)

C) Can send messages while on your mac/PC (advantage over whatsapp and sms (at least if you use a non jailbroken iphone. :D

A) & B) - KIK Messenger...

As usual, there is always a gotcha with fb.

In the android version of the app sending your location is on by default--even if off in the main fb app.

But what really got me was turning off notifications. You would think unchecking "Notifications" would turn them off, yes? Well fb's idea of turning them off is for EIGHT HOURS ONLY. No option for permanently off. Well, unless I set notification options for each contact individually: then I have the option for off--which is presumably really off--off for 1 hour, or off till 8am the next morning.

Also, SMS messages that I send with fb messenger are shown--in the app for me--prefixed by <Subject:0,0,0,xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> (where xxxxxxx is a large number, presumably some kind of message ID).

Way to go fb! Again.
