What is so confusing? I type the name of the person and Contacts fills in the contact. I'd say its almost idiot proof. :p
It's not idiot proof. Some of my contacts only have iPads and cannot use their phone number as their iMessage ID. So for those contacts, I have two conversations, one for texting and one for iMessage. I can't see what's what until I open the conversation to check the color. Now imagine telling elderly people that they need to remember the color of the conversation balloons in order to know to which device they are sending their messages... Please tell how that's not confusing?

And I haven't even started on problem 2 yet: people who have iPhones ánd iPads but only use their phone as iMessage ID on their iPhone and not on their iPad. You can have two separate iMessage conversations (one with phone number, one with AppleID e-mail address), leaving the conversation partner only to guess to which device they are sending a message.

It's very confusing and not fool proof. If you're replacing phone calls/texting, it needs to be fool proof and there should be ZERO confusion. If I message someone, I never want to worry about whether or not they will receive it. iMessage does have me worrying sometimes.

It is confusing when compared to Whatsapp. Period.

How have whatsapp managed to be adds-free and to deliver at the same time 18 billions messageper day (servers cost) and pay each month 50 developpers

There are more alternatives...

I don´t trust this people earning money with our information. Have you seen HushHushApp for example? That is the kind of App everyone of us should use, of course nobody have it, but you can be shure that anybody is watching!

In other news....I still don't understand why people use WhatsApp

What a dumb comment... How do I send a photo in a chat to an Android user for free? Don't say SMS cause it doesn't send photos.

I don't get why people keep on asking why people use Whatsapp over iMessaging.

It is simple really. There is a multitude of Android users globally, thus iMessaging is a no-go for these people. You can always go for KiK or any chatting app you can name of, but currently Whatsapp is still arguably the most popular and widely-used chat app. Based on reports, there's about 350mil to 400mil active Whatsapp users. These people would simply not leave Whatsapp for you.

I hate that Facebook wants to integrate to everything.

Same.

I value my privacy, I have no trust whatsoever towards Facebook, so Facebook buying WhatsApp means I'm moving. I actually can't believe WhatsApp has done such a thing...I've been recommending it to people for a long time, persuading friends to get it because of the privacy.

If you're like me and value privacy, take a glance at this - https://heml.is

I think numbers speak for themselves. Whatsapp was the first popular multi-platform chat app. This was before iMessage, before facebook message app etc. It's a tidy app, does what it needs nothing more nothing less and no silly ads or distractions. It works on all phones all over the world and overall just a well executed app. It's become part of the iPhone for me any many people I know. The first concern we all have when travelling is to make sure whatsapp is working during sim card swaps.

Thank you, Siderz and Koruki for explaining to all the people on this thread who either a) don't seem to know what WhatsApp is; b) have never used it; c) can't understand what the value is of an app that lets you message across brands and across the world for free. WhatsApp is NOT iMessage. If you've never had a need for WhatsApp you should probably travel more.

Facebook purchasing WhatsApp is an absolute disaster. How long will it take them to add "login with Facebook", and then all of your messages and chat history will become indexable by Facebook. I never let WhatsApp have access to my contacts, instead entering people as needed. Rest assured that I just deleted all my contacts and my chat history. If you have any interest in privacy and are a WhatsApp user, I would encourage you to do the same.

Serious question: Other than iMessage being iOS only, how are they inferior? I just looked over WhatsApp and thought, yep, everything in there is covered by iMessage...

You just said it there, iMessage is iOS only. So why use two services and try to find out who of your contacts has an iPhone when you can just use Whats App for almost everybody in your contacts list.

95 % of my contacts use Whats App, the rest has no smart phone I guess. I have no idea how many of my contacts use iMessage or any other service and I don't really care. Why should I? WhatsApp is kind of a standard.

They dont have servers
They run it all from the google cloud

Actually you might find its 40 million (minus the many on BlackBerry phones).
http://9to5mac.com/2013/12/20/black...llion-users-registered-on-bbm-for-iosandroid/

After the first week of BBM for iOS Android, it was 20 million there, bringing the total to 80 million.

When 60 days passed, they got 20 million more there, bringing the total to about 100 million by December.

Then they launched Find Friends

Then they launched 2.0 for Android and iPhone, including Voice and Channels

A couple of days ago they launched BBM for Gingerbread (still running on 20% of all Android devices)

i'm assuming the post refers to the fact that apple's acquisitions are relatively small and usually involve companies that have a tangible product and engineers making real profit. does whatsapp make money? i don't know but would it really surprise anyone to find out that Facebook just acquires them for all of the users. i can buy mailing lists too. that doesn't make me successful.

i have no idea if whatsapp was making money. was quattro, c3 or chomp?

i cant see how a picture taking software and a messaging app is considered a passing fad though. whether its worth these crazy amounts is another matter.

and i agree with your last sentence.

Most trends that have played a role in Apples success are the ones that it created itself and others have ridden the coat tails of. The iTunes Store, iPod, iPhone (App Store), iPad, Ultrabooks (MBA), even a well designed GUI. Apple didn't create the initial products, but they definitely created the popularity and demand for them.

sorry but does that really matter? i got the feeling you had something against trends and apple was all above that.

i think its a bit to far to say apple created the popularity and the demand. that would mean could do anything it wanted which would mean everyone would own a cube, ipod hifi and be pinging.

part of the ipod success can be traced back to walkmans. part of the iphone success can be traced back to phones and the first gen of smart phones etc

Who doesn't have unlimited texting? I don't see what the use of the services are for. If I am out of the country and need to contact someone that bad that doesn't have an iPod, iPhone, iPad or a Mac then I will send them an email or call them for the $1 it costs.

Not everybody lives in the US. In Germany unlimited texts cost 10€/month. And if you want to send a picture its 40cent/message. That's why it's so popular. In France nobody uses Whatsapp because SMS and MMS are included in every cheap contract. And in Spain nobody will contact you if you don't have internet because of high prices. Also only 10% of the people have an iphone (or only 2-3% in spain). You're pretty lonely if you rely on iMessage.

edit: wow, messages get censored here?

How about some options to choose resolution? How about, you know preview photos? Do they need to be in full resolution? Not everyone is photographer, nor everyone want the full sized photos either

Surely everyone, the non-photographers included is capable of choosing the resolution and previewing the photos in iPhoto and iMessaging them from there. Why do these extraneous things in a texting app, when you have a far more capable specialized program that is highly capable of doing just those things?

Venture capital. Sequoia had invested $60 million in WhatsApp. That plus $1 a year user charges were what was paying salaries and keeping the lights on.

Sequoias $60M just turned into a few billions, if you are wondering why they would invest in the first place.

Well that seems to have worked out for Sequioas.

Thanks Facebook!

Finally all my friends are changing to a more secure messaging app...like myengima or the like!

I already got 20 messages today from my friends who said they don't want to use Facebook anymore and who just now realize how unsafe what app is...I think it was the dumbest move ever!

Ridiculous!

Don't they have the resources to build their own App and the clout to market the hell out of it for a heck of a lot less? This is one of the dumbest purchases I've ever seen.

Well what's app was good while it lasted. Now that is it is owned by facecrap there will tons of ads and annoying messages popping up like "would you like to add you friends " or connect your Facebook account now."

I seriously hate facecrap.
