Are you kidding me? 1 BILLION DOLLARS! What a joke!

I wonder if we will have another tech crash eventually, as most of these companies are not worth even remotely that. i.e. Zenga buying OMGPOP for 200 mil.

Your move Apple, I hear twitter is pretty cheap, and you have a stack of cash that could reach the moon....of Saturn

This doesn't seem like a 1 billion dollar investment to me.
I'm sure there could have been many other things to blow that 1 $ Billion on.

keep away

this MUST have been a keep away bid. Either google or apple even were probably circling

Big deal. Instagram is pointless anyways. "Here, have a look at this photo of my desk that I've filtered to make it look vintage!" Dumb.

Glad I'm not the only one who didn't 'get it'. I really hated the crappy over-sepia usage that every_single_person felt was vital to make their photos of their night getting drunk look 'hip'.

Well done Instagram. You made a years worth of historic photos look like they were taken in the 70s...

Apple will never, ever buy anything anywhere near as high profile as Twitter...

Yeah, I'm another one who'd planned on trying Instagram at some point but won't now.

Facebook, your privacy policies, ethics around them, and your notions of what you own when people post are still awful.

RIP Instagram.

$1 billion, huh? What's next? Frickin lasers?

Ok somebody please help me here. While I'm not a user of either facebook or instagram I am somewhat familiar. But what technology or innovation does instagram have that Facebook couldn't duplicate or replicate without infringing upon any copyrights or patents belonging to Instagram. And isn't the installed user base of instagram THE SAME user base that Facebook has...?!!!!!! Who uses instagram that's NOT also on Facebook??? I'm desperately trying to understand how this was worth $1B.

I’m floored that Facebook can value Instagram at $1 billion. Seriously? These iOS/Android/etc. mobile developers seem to be the next bubble in the waiting.

Yeah that is a fact. That is an insane amount of money for that small company. If you got in on the ground flow of Instagram you are set for life now.

Don't think you get it, mate

Big deal. Instagram is pointless anyways. "Here, have a look at this photo of my desk that I've filtered to make it look vintage!" Dumb.

Perhaps it's pointless to you (you have actually tried it right?), but it has become a great portal for amateur and pro photographers to post their work and an excellent community for those who want a more interactive experience.

While there are many who use IG to post anything and everything (like Twitter or FB), it's far more an outlet for creativity for most of its users - which is something not really offered by Twitter or FB.

Here's to hoping that IG remains independent, but I'm definitely skeptical...

Well good for the Instagram developers. I like Instagram but will probably stop using it now - including going through the futile effort of deleting something on the internet. My reasoning is that although other people could "steal" and repost a photo from my Instagram account if they were so inclined (and yes, I am exaggerating my creative abilities - as if someone would want to steal one of my snapshots) this changes that equation by probably transferring rights to said photos to Facebook, a service that I do not use and am not a member of.

I don't even understand the FB juggernaut. Poor security, ugly interface, claims to private information, etc... and somehow government, companies, and people are all pushing everyone to go there - to a company whose business model is to provide a service in exchange for using your data in ways you don't expect. Time to boycott any company who will only provide information or contest entries or whatever to people who like them on Facebook. I don't want to work with a company that will force me to provide information to and use the services of another company that has nothing to do with what I am looking for.

Sure, I will be lonely and eventually hungry and unable to perform any kind of commercial transaction but...hey wait a minute? Is Facebook the anti-christ?

Yep yep. Makes me wonder what they're smoking at FB to offer that amount.... Seriously, couldn't FB come up with a service that could out-compete Instagram?

I'm sure FB could, but I think this is to take over their user base most likely are not all FB users. It's hard to build a large user base, look at google+

It's highly questionable that any company like this is worth 1B, but the communities aren't necessarily the same.

IG appeals to those who want a creative outlet, who want to see what other photographers are doing, and perhaps get some feedback from others.

For me it offers me a chance to focus on my photography and craft, instead of the constant bombardment of all that comes with FB.

Maybe they just wanted the Instagram developers to write an actually useful Facebook app??

But I am on board with most saying it is not worth that much money. They could have completely mimicked the app and paid way less in settlement costs in a few years when it went to court.

This has me rethinking my purchase of Facebook stock when it goes public... (yeah, that was going to happen ha)

Facebook now has access to Instagram's 15+ million users.

The app? no.
customers who use instagram? yes

These users are most likely already on Facebook, so they buy something they already have. I'm guessing the most frequent Instagram users already have a fan page, so Facebook doesn't even have to look for them.
So all they would've needed is a similar app, which could be easily done in a few months for a single digit million dollar budget.

Smart move, really!

Not that I used it very often, but now that FaceBook has there hands on it I'm done. I don't have a FB account and want nothing to do with their services.

$1 billion, huh? What's next? Frickin lasers?

Oddly enough, yes! The US Navy has already developed and tested lasers to be used on ships. The article says within four years but other sources say by 2018. US Navy lasers
