Wow, why all the hate? Instagram is a social app and network first and foremost. It has a huge user base that enjoy sharing photos and discovering what others are publishing.

So what that FB bought them? I'm taking a wait and see approach. All those that said they're deleting their accounts, yeah right whatever you say. If you really enjoy it I don't believe you.

The people that really and truly enjoy it and are active aren't going anywhere yet. Maybe you'll see ads and maybe you won't. Maybe there will be better integration with Facebook and maybe there won't.

It all remains to be seen. And just because FB bought it doesn't automatically mean that the Instagram developers are not going to continue working at Instagram.

We shall see.

do you know something I don't? care to share?

It's probably the same way FB does. Deleting your account won't actually delete it, it just sets it as hidden so that you can actually come back.

I use this to log back in to my closed FB account every once in awhile to spy on my "friends" who didn't have a chance to defriend me before I "closed" my account.

I have Instagram on my iPhone, I have fun with it, and I don't intend to stop using it b/c of FB's buyout. But I don't understand what it does for FB and why they would pay $1 billion for it. Wouldn't it be a lot cheaper to pay like $50 million (probably less) for a couple of good developers to make a similar product? It's not like Instagram invented filters. And if it's for the users, well I suspect the vast majority are already FB users so what's the point?

Guess this is why I'll never be a Mark Zuckerberg, but I don't see how Instagram was a smart acquisition. For potential investors, this should raise a big red flag.

EDIT: SmugMug is a LOT smaller than FB and managed to make a pretty cool photo app - Camera Awesome. And what I think is a very useful and underrated app is Photosynth. Probably because a certain company "whose name shall not be spoken" made it.

i think its hilarious that people that post pictures using Instragram are suddenly concerned about their privacy. i mean wasnt the point of Instagram to SHARE your pictures? i dont get the complains all of the sudden. if u dont want anyone to see your pictures you wouldnt use such a service in the first place

You can already take a photo and post it to FB with the FB app. How much does it cost to write a few filters and borders? $1 Billion? Awful pricey.

Well played Instagram.

Camera Awesome was created by the SmugMug people but is not directly tied into SmugMug like the Instagram app is tied into its host in that any photo you take goes up. Camera Awesome is a great standalone camera app on the iPhone to use for all reasons photography on the iPhone.

What is "Instagram"? -- never heard of it before today.

Edit: Is it some kind of photo editing app? I just use Photoshop.

It's not about the app, its about the social graph/network. Instagram is growing at an exponential rate. If it became dominant in the mobile photosharing space Facebook would have a problem, as Facebook's news feed is essentially about sharing photos, links and short commentary.

I love some of these replies. Most are coming from people who haven't used instagram since it first came out and just discovered you had it on your phone. It's not just about filters on a photo. They have a huge social network aspect of it now which has been it's main focus for a while.

Young people are using it like crazy. How do I know? My daughter has been using it and has over 20,000 followers. She posts a photo and within a few hours has over 150 comments, 4,000 likes. Guess what? Most of her photos don't use filters!

Now $1bil seems like a lot but instagram isn't just a photo filter app they are buying more than that. I think they are buying the competition before it gets too big.

Funny

That's funny because I just deleted Instagram from my iPhone last week. I honestly got tired of using it. Not that actually used it at all. All I did was look at the pictures that people posted which is where it is deceiving. I bet that more than half of the people that downloaded the app only use it like I do, which is to look at pics and thats it.

I concur. People are drama queens.

Hey look! I'm a Pats fan and we just agreed on something! ;)

$1bn seems like way too much, but then again Facebook's own valuation is firmly rooted in hype and projections.

This is a crazy story. It makes total sense for Facebook to buy Instagram, it makes sense that the Instagram team accepted the deal.

The only people who lose out are those who don't quite trust Facebook with our data.

Which is a lot of us.

I find it hard to believe you'd never heard of it until today. It's a retro photo filter app with a social network for following people, à la Twitter.

Facebook feared them. They feared there being another player in the market who was gathering massive numbers of users. So they bought them, not the technology.
