I quit Facebook and (supposedly) deleted my profile as soon as I could 5 1/2 years ago. I have read articles that say that just because you don't have a Facebook account doesn't mean that Facebook doesn't collect information about you. If friends or relatives post pictures or articles about you then Facebook can collect that information whether you want them to or not.

I also don't have an Instagram or WhatsApp or anything else that Facebook owns. I deleted my Twitter account 4 years ago as well. I have no illusions that my posts have disappeared but I do think that I should know and decide who can use my information or at least be paid for them using it.

So even if Apple is doing this for their own selfish reasons I hope it at least puts a dent into Facebooks profits. I would gladly support Apple if it comes down to an Apple vs Facebook showdown at least on this issue.

It benefits Apple? Ok, why is that bad? What kind of argument is that? If this benefits me the customer, which it does, then why do I care whether or not this also benefits Apple? If Apple’s business model monetizes something I want as a customer, then I’d say they’re smart for doing that. If FB monetizes something I DON’T want as a customer, then that wasn’t smart. And it’s finally catching up with them.

Companies like FB have been preying off the ignorance/obliviousness of customers who just want free stuff, no questions asked, for too long. I’d say both sides are in for a rude awakening. It’s way past due.

Hmmm... normally when you get an article like this you get people having it out on the forums featuring both sides of the argument. It’s all one way here. Does anybody support FB on this?

(I don’t. I don’t even have a FB account).

How many of y’all would pay Facebook monthly to not receive ads or them not to collect data?
I have come within figurative inches of offering to pay people I know to switch from Messenger to Signal because they do not grasp how truly awful and rotten it really is. That is Facebook's fear: being exposed to the antiseptic effects of sunlight.

Not me. I don't use Facebook and I don't really like that they can still mine my 5 year old data or save pictures that other people post with me that I don't even know about. My information is mine. They want to use it then they should pay people for the right to do so.

All Apple is doing is making you ask for permission for the things you’re doing anyway. If you refuse, you don’t care about the consumer, full stop.

If it bothers Zuckerberg so much, remove Facebook from the App Store and make it web app only. You can still leech off people’s private information, and it’ll clean up the App Store in the process.

As far as I am concerned I paid for Facebook upfront when I purchased a Quest 2. It was included in the device cost because it was required.

Don't trust any of them. They're all out to profile you and benefit off of it. Big Sur initial setup is just as evil hiding a bunch of data collection behind quick setup button, Safari collects your passwords by default under guise of compromised password service, wanted my fingerprint so gave them my middle one, etc.

It used to be most people were fine giving up some privacy for “free” stuff. But that has now changed where either people are more willing forgo using those services and use others or willing to pay to protect their privacy or those companies need to adapt and maybe even sweeten the pot by actually paying people for giving up some of their privacy.
