Don't worry about it. A lot of people here seem to be on their high and mighty horse in regards to even the smallest hint of anything that could be defined as piracy. If they belonged to your grandpa and this guy put his name on it, theoretically you can change it back.

Oh, and don't worry about the mac-retardedness. It will come quickly to you, spend a little bit with it and you will quickly grow to like it. We were all newbies at one point or another, a fact that some of us on here are quick to forget...

thank you very much for this. how do I change the name? as I previously stated I am sooooo mac retarded.

also how do I make a .mac account?

It depends application to application. It may be a registration kind of thing, may not. The first place to look would be to go to the menu bar: [Application]>About [Application]. That would show you who it is registered to, and depending on the application, may allow you to change it. Like I said, it is hard to give generalized directions for this.

As for the .Mac: this is a pay service, and has been renamed to Mobile Me, just so you know. You can sign up / get a free 60-day HERE

.Mac is now MobileMe, you can sign up for a free trial from the Apple MobileMe page.

As for the name, if you mean your username then you will need to create a new account for yourself:-
1) Apple Menu (top left on the screen) > System Preferences > Accounts
2) Click on the + symbol (you may need to click on the padlock and enter the admin accounts password), and enter your details (you would probably want to select Administrator from the New Account dropdown menu).

this post is embarrassing. this is complete proof windows users cannot think outside the box. top of the window vs top of the screen? Thats a whole what? Half an inch. In a desperate search for the word Safari at the top of the window one would think you'd come across it.

Don't generalize like that. It has nothing to do with being a "windows user". It is more of a personal problem with the OP (no offense) for not looking as hard as we would think he would.

Keeping the whole "I AM a Mac" / "I AM a PC" crap going is kind of ridiculous. letting your freaking computer define you is just sad is not saying much for you...

Its not completely ridiculous. I worked in IT where plenty of mac and windows users came in and I did see my share of mac retards, but I've also seen plenty of windows users that can't do a little problem solving to do a simple task when using mac os. I was basing off of the comment by the original poster saying "PCs rule!"

Still though, would you say that the retardation (on both sides) had to do more with what machine they were using, or just the fact that that person was that incapable of problem solving?

Clearly the fact that the person was incapable of problem solving. But seriosuly...come on. You can't argue that "the little red, yellow and green buttons" and the word "Safarai" are close enough to each other that one is bound to see it without post after post of explanations and screenshots and suggestions to reinitialize and reinstall.

I'm sure this was an extreme case of tunnel vision but it was just painful (and a bit funny) to read through all the posts of people trying to help someone find the word Safari at the top of the screen.

Oh it absolutely was. Good humor :D

And as I said, I feel this is a problem with the OP himself, and has nothing to do with the fact that he has been a long time PC user. Stupid is as stupid does.
(again, no serious offense here OP...)

to OP: you don't have to reinstall OSX to change the password. just boot from the install disk (insert the disk, turn the computer off, hold down c, then turn it on WHILE HOLDING DOWN C) and open the installer (or utilities) menu AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN and select reset password to reset your user password.

Times like these I wish this was a live chat, ideally with voices. Would provide much entertainment.

and your first sentence makes absolutely no sense.

Oh ya thanks no offense man but I think your fat and ugly ya that totally works out. do you people get enjoyment from pointing out every single little error and then making it sound like I caused global warming or something I believe I came on to this forum to get help with my problem not get people posting "man this OPs and idiot" and "good grief" if you think its so stupid than don't waste your time replying find something productive to do.

Like I said, I was not trying to maliciously attack your intelligence or anything. Perhaps I should have dropped the "stupid is..." comment, yes. Sorry for offending you with that one.

Just learn to take a little criticism is all, man. You have to admit, no matter the size of your screen (even a fifty inch screen is still only 1080p MAX), you did have a case of tunnel vision, and it was mildly humorous watching people try to point you in the right direction.

And, like I have said in numerous threads, people here are quick to forget that we were all Mac noobs once, too. No doubt most all of us have had a moment like this; you were just unfortunate enough to do it in a public venue, if you will, where people will obviously have their say about it.

well at least your all thousands of miles away from me and i'll never meet any of you. And regarding the post that said "this demonstrates pc users complete something about problem solving" actually what it demonstrates is how easy windows is to use. I never had to search the screen frantically for a little button so naturally I didnt think to. :D

haha OK I'm done, not going to take the bait on this one. But if anyone else is still following this thread, be prepared for numerous posts along the lines of "Windows sucks, Macs are way easier to use, yada yada yada"

alright bringin it back and need help fast

So heres the thing I still have not gotten rid of this password problem and thought I would continue this thread so you have some of the story. My power mac has tiger installed on it. I have a disk for 10.3 or something like that and a disk for leopard. To erase the password you have to put in the install disk but I dont have the tiger disk so how can I erase the password is there like a total system wipe? Oh and no more comments ridiculing my astigmatism vision disabilities please :)

I don't have personal experience with "wiping" the password as you describe, but if you have a Leopard disk, you should really just install that. Either way I think you are going to have to reinstall to "clear" the password, so just upgrade while you're at it...

I have a disk of leopard and I keep trying to install it but its says that its damaged and cant install when its about 50% done. I tried doing the change password thing on it but no luck. Come on ill do like anything that will erase this password should I just borrow a copy of leopard from someone since mine doesnt work?
