Not sure they are thinking when they separate messages and the main facebook app. The decision just doesn't make sense.
So now I just don't have both, I deleted them. Using Safari to browse facebook on my iphone is just fine.

As a Moments user the app has a lot of utility - not least making it possible to share photos without risk of them becoming available to the public in the main platform. An important consideration.
More crucially Facebook seems to be learning an important lesson from iTunes - overburden one app with functionality and it can become bloated and a frustrating experience to use.
Though people may gripe about having to install extra apps, that may be for the best as functionality is added to each to prevent a single confusing beast of a product.

Never used FB, never will.
I made an account, concluded that it wasn't something I liked or wanted to continue using, and then discovered how insanely hard it is to delete said account. I'll never put my finger in a machine like that again. I much prefer reality.

I'm not sure why people are complaining since Facebook is free. If you were actually paying for the product, then you would have grounds for complaints.
I'm using a quote to respond to your comment -- "Facebook is not free. While you don't have to pay to join the site, you nonetheless give Facebook two things that are much more valuable: your time and your intellectual property. Facebook gives you access to its system for free because it is in Facebook's interest that you spend time on the system and click links. So, what is your time worth? Quite a bit, when you consider that being on Facebook is keeping you from doing other things."

In addition, customers of Facebook endure a platform that continually changes things to support its own interest with complete disregard to the user base, which is a big mistake if you really want to retain users. The platform started with good intentions, but has been hijacked by the greedy investor pigs of Silicon Valley. Facebook is one of this generation's most antisocial activities. It's a skeleton of what it was originally, today it's just marketers selling to people all around the world.

Finally, the site uses the worst shade of blue I've ever seen. The most ugly interface.

I wouldn't say people are leaving it, there's just more annoyance when using it when we get pushed to do things (messenger was the worst thing to be dragged into)

I wondered why it went to the #1 app in Australia, now I know why....

Well, you are missing out

Missing out on what? To see people I don't know get married and have kids?

I actually have friends. You know, the kind that you dial their number and talk to. The ones where they have your actual back.

Yeah, Facebook is free... Right.

Gee, I do wonder how they keep paying their bills? They must have some assets, right?
Oh, look: they can claim to have over a billion users on their platform, I wonder if that's worth anything somehow......

I do hope you are being sarcastic.

Facebook makes a fortune selling advertising, and they have targeting which makes google ads look like the bulletin board at your local supermarket.

Glad to see that I wasn't the only one a little put off by the: "Install this app or your photos are GONE!" Most of the photos I had on there were from 2013 so it was a bit of a walk down memory lane. Made sure I had a backup, and noted to use Facebook a bit less. The app, after a quick install, didn't strike me as something I needed so I uninstalled it.

Big company like Facebook could have done something like Picasa/Google Photos/Flickr - at least offer something in return for its gross violation of privacy (yeah I know, personal opinion). But I like Google because I get so much out of it (tarabytes of gd storage, a reliable email, unlimited photo storage, and I could go on and on and on).

So yeah, maybe I was part of the few that was offended by this? :p

Yeah I think he was being sarcastic. Ahaha. And you put it very well. +1

Sarcastic? Of course I am, I even point out how you are their asset, basically willingly consuming ads all the time that can be targeted at you more efficiently.

Their asset is your time and your network of friends ensuring that you come back fairly reliably.

Google works in a very similar way though, because due to many services that harvest information about your identity and preferences Google can target ads fairly efficiently as well.

Now, who of those might be the sharpest I cannot tell, because quite honestly I'm an Adguard user, but I think they aren't that far apart.
Probably depends a lot where you typically spend your time online, too.

I don't actually consume their ads, but I've spent many thousands of dollars advertising on both Google and Facebook. Facebook returns are far and away better than Google.

On a personal note, I was leaving Malaysia and needed to find a home for a cat. I took out a $5 ad on Facebook targeting cat lovers in Penang, Malaysia, and in 12 hours had over 1000 likes, 100 shares and 20 qualified new cat owners. The cat had a new home that night.

Never could have pulled that off using Google ads.

Wow, that's an amazing story, thanks for sharing.

i'll keep that in mind should I ever need to find a relevant group of people for little more than what a Starbucks coffee costs :)

Well I guess the actual FB app is going to become useless with all of these apps. No biggie. I mainly use messenger. My posts are fed through via Instagram and Twitter. I can't remember the last time I actually went into FB

I deactivated my account 3 weeks ago and feel so much better for it. They fail to act on legitimate reports I've made about inappropriate content, bullying by people that happened to be commenting on the same post I was (real low level stuff which I can't even repeat here), and harassment. People get addicted to receiving likes to the point where that's all they live for - staring into their phones like zombies waiting for the next dopamine hit. It can be OK if you set it up right and don't use it too heavily. But on the whole I think it's an evil.

Lol, condescending much??!!

The assumption that people that eschew Facebook don't know what it is or what it does, is the height of egotistical ignorance.

Please.
Yeah; believe it or not: we can actually grasp the concept. And we are not "missing out"; trust.
As a matter of fact.... I challenge you to d/l a timer app & for a day, press it every time you waste your life on that time vampire; then- come back here & post to me in minutes and seconds the quantified amount YOU are missing out on life... I will be looking into my daughter's beautiful eyes during that time, listening to her slowly starting to connect in her perfect little brain the sounds animals make with photos of them in her picture books.
Perhaps if a colleague of a former flatmate's cousin saw a video of something equally precious & posted it on FB, you will be able to semi experience that type of joy third-hand.
Enjoy the disconnect.
I absolutely LOVE technology; it is my lifeblood, career, & passion- but miss me with Facebook please. It is the antithesis of all which I hold dear.
Well said. I actually feel the same way about all social media.

Maybe I read it wrong but it appears that Facebook will soon be removing this option, thus forcing users to download a separate app for private chat even on desktop browser Facebook, too?

Yes, somehow folks have forgotten that having actual relationships is superior to having FB "friends".

I liked (and agreed with) your post, until I read the last message. You should rethink your concepts, my friend. Slavery doesn't compare to anything else.
Correct.

A few people I know have actually deleted their accounts, not just suspending them. Email and iMessage is where it's at.

iMessage is not a viable solution for many, it's bugs history aside its not cross platform.
[doublepost=1465663474][/doublepost]Not a fan of Facebook, though it in a central way to keep in contact with many people around the world. As much as I dislike it, I have been informed of many happy and tragic events via Facebook by friends and family.

iMessage bugs history? Really? Apple is rumoured to be introducing it to Android. One would assume Windows is soon, especially if there will be ApplePay incorporated into it.

iMessage is a really simple app that allows users to communicate. It's encrypted and free from the advertisements and nonsense Facebook dishes up. One can easily replace Facebook with iMessage for communicating, and email, as old as it is, is also great.
