/me is glad to have grown up in the 70/80s long before all that c### started

/me is glad to not have any kids that could get poisoned by something like that

/me fears to live as an old man in a world controlled by kids grown up on this

:p:eek:o_O
This type of argument can be made for every generation. It's natural to think that we grew up in the perfect time. Which I believe, but so does everyone.

Parents need to learn how to say 'no'.
I don't want my son using this product, so he won't use this product. I know how to say no. But there's also parents who want to say yes to this. If their parenting feels that kids sharing photos in a space designed for younger kids, I'm fine with them making that decision.

Also for some people it might be "no" at 8 and "yes" at 12. So parents can say no when appropriate and yes when appropriate based on their parenting and their kids.

I think some people are missing the point here. The negative thing is not your kids putting up pictures of their dog, or following some clown as they do stupid things.

The FB company track and harvest every single piece of data they can every time you interact with their product ( and agree to cross site tracking cookies). Allowing Zuck to start building a very detailed profile of you 8 year old is sinister beyond belief.

Agreed. I have a 6 year old, so of course this is not an immediate concern of mine since she is NOT on social media, but even so, the thought of what could be done with this is a bit...unsetting.

(Heck, I don't even think "unsettling" is a good enough word)!

It's pretty much this. Facebook trying to cater to children will only result in children's online behavior being TRACKED by Facebook...just like they track YOU. It isn't a "Think of the Children" fallacy (Appeal to Emotion) either, as we already know you're the product to Facebook, not the consumer. We already know Facebook has to track you everywhere in order to target you. We already know apps call home to Facebook instead of themselves.

And Facebook, being the darlings they are, has never bluntly told anyone they track you everywhere (literally this needs slapped across your face, not hidden in a EULA). OH NO, we had to learn that from MacRumors and other sites like that.

The creepy lizard man in charge really wants our children. Hope they are better at handling the under 13's data than they are with everyone else's.

Absolutely; we've got to stop how our children are ruined by jazz music… eh… sorry… wrong decade… we have to save our children from the harmful radiation from TVs… eh… still wrong decade? Oh… so… save our children from violent cartoons? Console gaming…? The gheys…? Non-outdoor playing…? Gender neutral bathrooms…? Vaccines…?

Dammit, it's just so hard to know what the old people are at the moment saying the young people will get corrupted by… 🤷
By this comment I’m guessing you don’t have children of your own. Social media has caused most of the modern turmoil in America. Turning a blind eye and acting like children shouldn’t be targeted or
aren’t affected is nonsense.

Social media may have helped but a lack of parenting and a lack of discipline is the problem.

Instagram for kids under 13 should be this:

I’m not interested in this whole “omg generation x+1 is so much worse than generation x” because every single generation since the beginning of time without fail participated in this ridiculous game of elitism.

That being said, I’m not going to control/make mandatory what my children do on their devices because that’s how you tear down trust and build up secrecy. But that doesn’t change the fact that FB is straight cancer and I’m never going to be that happy about anyone in the family using any of their gross products.

A number of studies have shown the negative mental impacts on children from social media, which are even worse at younger ages. I'd strongly consider keeping kids off social as long as possible.

But of course, big corporations want to get those ad dollars from every living person as soon as possible. Can't build an entire profile of a person if you don't start when they're as young as possible. Plus they're at the perfect age to bother their parents for products.

Why do kids under 13 “need” Instagram? Can’t they just go hang out and talk to their friends in person like people have been doing for the past 10,000+ years?

'We want to really take full advantage of your children and groom them at an early age to give up their personal information without realizing it. We have found the easiest way to due to this is to make children's version of our apps.'.
