So is this any different then the exisiting Messenger app on the windows store?

Interesting. Sounds like someone at Facebook missed the point.

It's their "quick way" of responding to the "needs" resulting from the pandemic. They know that getting something quickly out there for all the folks working from home in front of their computers is good for business, and they can always spin it as "helping during these difficult times". It's appalling, but that's how Facebook always worked. Pretend to be all about the people, when in fact they're all about people's data. Now, Electron itself is fine. I developed applications in it before. It is resource-hungry though, that's for sure, and security-wise... hard to tell. You can use Node.js to interact with your file system, it's not just a wrapper around the UI.

Has anyone gotten this running on 10.11? The requirement is only 10.10. But it won't open beyond a blue splash screen that won't even let me drag it around.

Depends on the version of Electron they use, I think. Also, the ability to drag the window comes from a simple setting in Electron which they would need to turn on. Sounds like a beta quality product, or maybe even alpha.

So, its actually quite fast. And very much like the iOS version... which, if I understand it, they completely rebuilt and relaunch last week. So, raises the question: is this a Project Catalyst app?

Facebook has gone the way of the Yahoo... it had its time, now things need to be changed. A company that sells nothing except its users data is not something you want to use anymore.

The requirement for the initial release might have been a mistake, I updated Messenger and it now requires macOS 10.12.

Using it, but I don't get any notifications, doesn't appear in the notifications settings on Mac either, anyone else have this issue.
