I have a lot of friends and family scattered around my home province, so Facebook is one of the few ways we can stay connected. This will help out a ton as now I don't need to keep a browser open at all times.

Oh my God. No way. Finally. Finally we're adding features that were standard in the early 2000s! I can't even believe why we've transitioned over to using a website to chat with people, that doesn't give notifications, doesn't show an unread count, doesn't have windows that can be opened and closed, and is tied to loading a website that has nothing to do with the chat functionality. Damn.

This is good.
I don’t like Facebook but I’m forced to use messenger. I trust much more a Apple Store sandboxed app than being logged in in my browser, even if it is safari. That’s more reassuring. Just don’t forget not to give permission to access the microphone and camera.

Forced..

Kind of has a rough interface.

For example, go to Preferences->Log Out, and it somehow opens a sliding dialog box from the window behind it over the foreground window. Some of the other preferences look like they'll open in-app options but are links to web pages.

The "Like" emoji that on the web-site you can grow by pressing and holding doesn't work in the native app. And it doesn't have the sound effects.

Haven't tested video as I don't use that.

Overall room for improvement, but at least unlike Apple, Facebook syncs all messages without having to pay for iCloud storage and Messages in the Cloud.

I have work and volunteering chat groups. I successfully transitioned my family and most of my friends to iMessage and Telegram.

Nobody is forcing you. Just tell the people at work you deleted your Facebook account, and you won’t get a new one. “Force” them to adapt to you.

I don't use Facebook nearly as much as I used to, but I have to have an account because I need to stay in touch with a few people in neighboring countries that simply don't use anything else for messaging.

This is still a crappy Electron app, but at least it's sandboxed by Apple's standards and I don't need to keep Safari up and running with just one pinned tab all the time.

I was, thanks. Does it consume more resources than a browser window?

The “app” is based on Electron, which is essentially a whole Chromium-based browser engine that just shows a single website. Electron itself does not have the best reputation for producing resource-efficient applications, mildly put.

Am I the only one wondering why Apple hasn't merged iMessage and FaceTime on the Mac yet? Both apps are getting really outdated and don't really talk to each other...

Interesting. Sounds like someone at Facebook missed the point.

I like it. Admittedly, I no longer use my MacBook as much as I used to, but when I'm not using my iPad, I prefer the messenger app over the browser version. Wish FB had an app also.

Has anyone gotten this running on 10.11? The requirement is only 10.10. But it won't open beyond a blue splash screen that won't even let me drag it around.
