If they write software for it that's as good as the current Facebook iPhone app, then they're onto a winner....

As someone once said, it's all about the software.

Their current iPhone app is straight up garbage. If they write software for a phone like that they'd have something worse than everything else on the market. Their iPhone app is only popular because it's the easiest way to access Facebook on the go.

this is why Mark and Facebook sucks. They got lucky riding the social media momentum with Facebook. Anything other this company brings forth sucks. They should focus on bettering facebook and related apps. They will be crushed by Apple, Samsung and Windows phones .

Idiot

I'm reminded of Steve's quote to the then president of ESPN:

“I am George Bodenheimer,” he said to Jobs. “I run ESPN.” Jobs just looked at him and said nothing other than “Your phone is the dumbest ****ing idea I have ever heard,” then turned and walked away.

There's already FB app for Android, WP, iOS... I wonder what extra FB phone could bring?

At the moment we're witnessing a fight for internet superiority through ecosystems. Facebook see Google as their major competition in social networking, but that's just a feature of the ecosystem. If another company can leverage one of their strengths and use it to push into social networking (Android Google+ integration), Facebook won't be happy.

Amazon are in, Google are in, Apple are in, Microsoft are in, Samsung aren't far away.

Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Facebook all come from a strong software background, but are having to push into hardware, whereas Samsung are coming from the hardware side, and Apple are perhaps best placed in terms of experience in both mobile hardware and software, though historically their cloud services have been lacking.

At the moment, Facebook has a place in all of these ecosystems as a feature simply because of its user base, but google has its sights set on Facebook, and will try to steer users towards G+ with Android, and if Facebook starts bleeding active users, it's in trouble.

So what does Facebook do? I'd guess that they'll follow Amazon (and likely Samsung) in forking Android, and use Microsoft services (search, maps, mail) to fill in any gaps they have, and aim at the low end of the market, hoping for quick adoption with teenagers.

Pure speculation, of course.

Mark is no Steve Jobs.

even though he thinks he is.

Yep, correct, SJ he is not.

However, what he is is a young man w/ ambition and tons of cash at his disposal. This by no stretch makes him an instant winner.....but passion and resources are a dangerous combination at times.

Didn't really work for google though ;)

Also....is it just me or does this particular article lack some basic things, like grammar....or the ability to not come across as a really late April fools joke? To me it just kind of reeks of cheap. Maybe I'm being harsh.

What?

I does not make sense. It does if you are paranoid as Mark is, but I do not have an smart phone to log into Facebook.

Facebook is a good leisure web site but Youtube is better for videos, iTunes is better for songs, Google is better for searching and Facebook is better than Hi5 and Myspace.

I mean, they can build their phone but... Facebook phone? Starting that I wish never had a Facebook profile and I really would like to deleted. I actually do not have an iPhone because I will waste so much time.

If I get an iPhone is for maps and pictures and make phone calls. My crappy BlackBerry can take pictures and for now that would do.

Mark Zukerberg lacks the vision Steve Jobs had and he will never have it.
At least when it comes to hardware.

Google is a HUGE ad company and people use android,I doubt the masses know how google and facebook make money

I dig the sig, and the comedian :)

Agreed. I'm just saying the means are there....doesn't mean it will produce anything.

I made a crack about Google earlier...referencing the Nexus line....but now that I look back on it....one way or the next, they coughed up Android...whether that was a result of a pretty much failed effort to sell hardware is debatable.

I only said that to get to this: What if, at the end of the day....Facebook tries to enter the world of building an operating system? I don't think that they have the talent or the instincts....but its a point to ponder.

If that is Mark's thinking, then he clearly believes he lives in some sort of Olympus.

Facebook is a service, and because of that it will always be used through some application on a platform.
All the money that Facebook spends on building a phone will be wasted. Facebook is a product with a limited lifetime, so Mark should use the time to give value to the company and sell his shares eventually because the IPO fail is the confirmation that Facebook will see the same destination as MySpace...

It's clear that Facebook needs to SELL a real product or they will fail.

Consumers are over-saturated with marketing, and that's how FB makes their money. So far they have collected the personal data and interests of a lot of people and make their money selling YOUR data to advertisers but users don't really care about ads.

FB will be old news the moment someone comes out with the next cool social media app. But if FB can get YOU to not only give them your data for free to sell, but also BUY a product from them, then they have a chance.

A phone is perfect because they collect your data, keep you emotionally invested in giving away your data, plus tie their app to a product you must buy.

Facebook phone? This is exactly what they need after a failing IPO, a phone that will tank.

Dude...roughly a month ago....I was kicking around the idea of borrowing against my 401 to invest in FB. Damn I'm glad I didn't....although, I think in the the long run they'll make it.

I want an Amiga phone, which will be expensive, but about 4x as fast and powerful as any other phone out on the market.

:)

When has Facebook not been "Just Another App" on a phone? They could potentially offer some options that one had to pay for....

For instance: I do not like sharing photos on Facebook because they compress them. Get into the Picasa/Flickr business...give us the option to store uncompressed photos. Buy Spotify and make it part of Facebook. Maybe buy a movie service (like Netflix) and make it part of Facebook. Make Facebook a true platform/alternate Internet. My mother and my aunts really treat Facebook like it is the Internet.

Integrate social into all of those things and monetize it buy charging for these services.

Exactly what i think, solid businessplan.

But Mark, Facebook is just an app?!

And they should definitely enhance the performance of their apps before even thinking of developing a phone of their own

But that is exactly the point. Imagine if the only way to get a great facebook experience is by using their own phone. Otherwise you are stuck with their crappy apps for other platforms.

i don't think he thinks that, he's only trying to run a successful business. Just because he wants his company to make smartphones doesn't mean he is trying to be jobs.

not only is he no Steve jobs, he is an intellectual property thief, period

With our new Facebook phone, you will only get the advertising that you like. So as soon as you wake up, you'll be reminded of the things that you want to get through your day. And before you sleep, you are reminded of the things that you'll want the next day. :)
