To be honest I have been using DuckDuckgo for 2 years and it almost never happens that I do not find what I was searching for.
I honestly don't understand why more people don't switch.
I can think of 3 reasons:
  1. Habit (if the default works, why change it?)
  2. Not knowing how to change the default setting (most people don't venture into settings for fear of breaking things)
  3. Fear of being different from everyone else (look at how people are ridiculed for using Bing - which in my experience has been pretty good, but my default is DDG <- ha! see! even I have a little fear of being ridiculed for just mentioning Bing 😅)

This was an earnings call. Audience was shareholders and media. What was FB suppossed to say? "We're totally screwed."? Calculated face-saving move, like Kevin Bacon at the end of Animal House - "Remain calm. All is well!".

So Facebook really was lying with their outrage and newspaper ads. Would anyone call them out on that? I guess not. No wonder Zuck is rich, he can literally do or say whatever he wants without any accountability.

Something tells me Facebook is full of ****.

They certainly weren't saying this during their quarterly projections. It's moves like this that make me happy to be an Apple customer. Apple don't make money from selling your data to advertisers, they make money selling their hardware and services with privacy as a focus.

I recently did the change away from Google search to DuckDuckGo, and, well, it’s not great. I find myself going to Google often anyway. You are sort of trapped in the Google search paradigm for now. I ditched Gmail years ago for iCloud, which has been fine. Apple Maps have gotten better, etc. Anyway, getting away from these types of companies is hard to say the least.
You can quickly search google via DuckDuckGo by putting !g before your search term. It acts as a go-between so google gets their data, not yours

I deleted FB and Messenger, it was over once they opened it up to the general public. FB was only good when you had to have a university email to join. Plus Zuck is a total creep.

Personalized ads are the Devil. It either shows me stuff I already bought or it is stuff I googled once in a restless night and suddenly thinks I need 100% like … just show me random stuff if anything, and there might be something I never actually thought of but like. It’s backwards

Then why all the full page newspaper ads?? Something tells me Zuck is full of it
They probably figured out that even if it impacts their ad revenue initially, it will impact independent companies even more and they will have to work with someone like FB now.
So unfortunately it might actually be a win in terms of revenue since they are one of the few doing large scale tracking that can still have some results.

It means their so called targeting doesn't work. It also means the premium they're charging businesses for "more" targeted" ad slots are scams.

I use it on one of my devices and I find it really bad - I invariably end up doing a google search in the end anyhow

I wish we could get a new Adam Buxton show that eschews YouTube comments in favour of Social Media company statements…

They have found a way already I am sure, last night I was sending the management company a request for repair of my bathroom and all I can see today is ads about bathtubs, toilets and bathroom remodeling companies.
Yep.

I might have this confused but I had allow tracking already turned off in settings so I haven’t see these pop ups in 14.5.

Even with that setting disabled if I go on Facebook I always got targeted ads.

I'm so glad that other than Instagram (that's just useful for my job), Facebook hasn't been a part of my life since 2014
Unfortunately, you've still been part of Facebook's life. Even if you don't use any of their products, they still collect data on you to collect a shadow profile on you that is only visible to Facebook.
