"We jumped the gun on this technology, and abused our power by invading the privacy of billions of people for 10 years, because nobody in power was smart enough to tell us 'no'. People are finally catching onto us, and our legal team has forecasted that keeping this technology around will cost us more in lawsuits and bad PR than the profit it generates. So, we still don't care about protecting people, but in the interest of future profits and trying to stay ahead of the game, we are virtue signaling by shutting down this invasive feature even though the damage has already been done. Also, we may be deleting the raw 'data', but not the AI which was the end goal of it all anyway. We convinced a billion people to train our AI for us, and now we can turn it back on whenever we feel like the reward will outweigh the risk again."

“Facebook no longer require actual human faces to further develop our invasive technologies, so we’ll be deleting the data we have no use for anymore as a PR stunt, and continue to develop said invasive technologies going forward.”

Fixed.

Am I the only one that's going to miss auto-tagging of photos? I've conceded (like most here) that they already have my information, and now, probably hundreds of other companies.

If they already have it, why not at least let us keep using one of the few parts that's good about it?

They could shutdown today and there will still be people out there complaining about it. I'm convinced the people that live and breathe to hate facebook are the ones logging in everyday posting about how much they hate it, following toxic people and pages, and then in turn telling everybody how bad the experience is. Google has an entire operating system for them to track your use and hardly anyone even mentions it.. Google is the OG of privacy invasion and they seem to get little coverage these days.
I hate FB... and I stopped using FB/IG for years now. 1.) perception is reality ( for many). Is FB the only culprit...no. Does FB cause a lot of self harm... ABSOLUTELY.

It’s a step in the right direction. Just thinking of how much the U.S. would be a Wild West if there was no government oversight. An unfortunate necessity needed in the freest country in the world.

You must be new here.... (else a very infrequent visitor)

I don't believe Google to be saints but they pale in comparison to Facebook.

I haven't had a Facebook account since early 2012 and yet, I still receive occasional e-mails from them that my account is still there, waiting for me, despite the "everything will be gone in 6 months" warning.

That’s what I was thinking too, they’ve likely got wind of something coming and are trying to get in front of it.

When they announced they were going to implement facial recognition 10 years ago was the day I systematically deleted every photo from my account and then deleted my entire account. Obviously, that wasn't the only reason, but it was the straw, for sure. Not a day has gone by that I regret the decision.

I might be in the minority here but I believe there is a difference between using a customer's data to make your own products and services better vs treating people like products with constantly diminishing value. Facebook isn't bad because they collect data. They are bad because they sell it without any contemplation over who is paying for it. Had they become a universal login and discovery service the perception of their brand would be more like Apple's reputation. As it is I see them as very different companies.

I'm with you. Personally I have never come across a situation where Apple knowing "about me" has served me in a negative way. Just the opposite, it has improved my experience with Apple over the years.

What they are not telling us is they have long since replaced face recognition with something else and have built a new database. o_O

From a business standpoint it makes sense to shut it down. Unless they were using facial recognition to sell the tracking data the feature had no real financial income (if they did sell the data then that is an even worse violation of privacy than what we know about).

Just think about the number of servers required for the processing and storing of all of the data. Being able to close up essentially an entire server farm could save the company millions of dollars while also "doing a good deed" to help get a little out of the sticky situation they find themselves in.

However, it is one thing to get rid of a large server farm...

But, deleting the facial recognition software is not going to happen. Guaranteed, they will still keep it and will still use it for their own secret projects. But an even more likely possibility is that they sell the code to another company (again millions of profit)... after all they matured and trained up this AI with a huge investment of developers and hardware.
