If you use the Fluff Buster browser extension, you can revert it back to the old scheme, at least for now. Dunno if it'll continue working after their Sept cutoff date 😶

And this is related to Apple as if......
Wtf has Facebook's web design changes do in common with Mac stuff and had to be posted here? We get a lot of Facebook related news nowadays that I started thinking that you partially advertise it somehow.

I've been using a plug in called Social Fixer for some time now. The programmer is in the process of trying to modify the code for the new design.

I thought websites would stop trying to merge their mobile and desktop designs into one? It's awful.

It should be a plain white page saying "Close this page and get an actual life...". It has now been 16 months of irreversibly deleting my Facebook and Instagram accounts, and I have been blessed every minute since. The amount of time I got back for myself is unbelievable and I wasn't even an avid user!
Yes, indeed! I deleted mine years ago and have no regrets whatsoever!

I always switch back to the old version and when they ask why, I tell them that the new one is hideous and looks like the facebook version of those Firefly phones, for elderly people, where everything is 3 times as big as it needs to be. I'd love NOTHING more than to ditch facebook all together, but I have family on it and for some, it's our only means to communicate. If they're forcing this awful change on everyone, I'll just stick to the app and forgo any desktop interactions.

It's been the default since May? I still have the old design, and there's been no option to change to the new one despite multiple articles claiming there's an option.

it's rolling out. My wife's FB layout was changed, not mine.

I was just asked to switch to the new layout.

Does the new design steal more of your data than the old one?

If you dont want data stolen, dont get on it?

I really dislike the new look and went back to Classic, I don't think they could put more wasted whitespace on the screen even if they tried, why are things so large now??! I only access it in the browser, I strongly dislike Facebook and I won't have the apps on my devices.

Really wish it was easier not to have Facebook, but I was the awkward one when a wedding was being organised via a Facebook group so ended up creating an account again, now most of my interest groups for cars have moved from the forums to Facebook groups . 😞
Right I only log on once in a while now. I was optimistic about the new design but it was so uncomfortable to use cause it took up SO much space on my screen vs the classic lol

What I seem not to understand is why the hell facebook refuses to load when I am connected to a VPN while other websites load successfully even youtube, am I the only one experiencing this?

You know whats obsolete Zuckerberg? Facebook...Facebook is obsolete, and data hoarding and spying business model. Things are changing and you are walking the path of Yahoo.

Pretty sure the paths and products there are fairly different.

I deleted my Facebook account 4 years ago but this design looks good. It was always pretty busy.

A typical example of all that’s wrong with computing. Being forced to use the sucky new design all because the company thinks they know what’s good for you. Why do you seek to confuse people, especially older people? You do realize that your new design will suck more, right? Most people who ’design’ webpages or app UI are clueless and if they get lucky with said app/webpage then it’s not usually due to that but some feature.

Do. Not. Change. The. User. Interface.

How hard is this to not follow?

You are over-generalising a bit. Reality is a tad more nuanced than that. I am not sure about Facebook (nor am I a user for quite some time now), but there are companies that do extensive user research before settling on a design or UX. One could also argue - just being the devil's advocate here - that the design people "like" is not always what the business goal is. Statistics show that people get used to change. We often don't like change, but we get used to it. Every time Apple removes a port or changes the UI, people are up in arms prophesying the end of Apple, threatening to dump all their Apple devices into the fiery pits of Etna, yet it never happens, and Apple doubles its share-value in 6 months. The bottom line here is that many companies contrast likability with revenue, and it's not always an easy decision to make. Often user assumptions are in stark contrast with data that is being gathered on user behaviour over many many months.

Unfortunately, also because people don't like change, they will feel very reluctant to dropping a platform they are now invested in. It sounds ridiculous, but hundreds of millions of people's lives revolve around Facebook and that's where they store all their memories, that's where they have their conversations, set their restaurant reservations, etc. It is both mind-boggling and soul-crushing to see people do this, but it is nevertheless the reality. Facebook can unleash the arguably worst of designs, and they will not drop the platform unless there is a viable alternative. Except there isn't because at this point Facebook is so huge that it's very difficult to compete with, unless there is governmental input - see China or Russia.

I’m bothered by the fact that there are so many mouse-over pop ups. Mainly infoblox about posters and commenters. It’s visually distracting to have the pop up in and out as you move the pointer around. It’s also a minefield for clicking. If you move the cursor to click on the ‘like’ icon, a pop up may appear over it and you have suddenly send a friend request to the person you were arguing with!

Initially, Facebook was a chronological feed where the further you scrolled, the older the posts were. You could always find something if you scrolled far enough. It was a way to know what your actual friends are DOING and POSTING onto Facebook.

Many years ago, they changed this, to make the posts seemingly random. If you go to Facebook, you have no idea what you'll see. A post from 2 days ago, or from 2 minutes ago. And if you refresh the page, it will be something completely different. You will mostly see ads disguised as posts from your friends, because your friends will share pages that are basically ads. Then there's "stories" which is just... I don't even know. A photo that you can only look at for 2 seconds and then it loads another one. I never had enough time to figure out what the hell that is.

Ever since then, Facebook is not about what people POST on Facebook. It's some unpredictable, obscure, automated feed that says stuff about people that you may not even know (because they are comments on a post that a friend of a friend shared so it has nothing to do with any of your friends). So basically I go on Facebook, and if there's nothing that makes sense immediately, I close it. I don't bother scrolling because there's no point, it doesn't increase my chances of finding something I'm looking for. Seems like Facebook is not designed for you to actually LOOK for something, but rather for when you have no idea what you want and it literally just "feeds" you completely random stuff.

The new design is another step in this direction: I have no idea what's going on, where stuff is, and all I see is "content" and I have no way of controlling it. You can't sort it, you can't change it, and you have no idea why it's being shown to you. It's like TV, it's just there for you to see, and if it's not relevant to you well... too bad.

The bad part is that I have no idea what my friends are doing unless I ask them. The good part is that this means I spend almost no time on Facebook anymore, especially thanks to their standalone Messenger app which is pretty cool. You no longer have to load the website to talk to people.
